End of an Era: Lakers Icon and ‘Zen Master’ Phil Jackson Dead at 79
The basketball world is in mourning following the tragic passing of Phil Jackson, the iconic former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, at the age of 79.
Widely revered as one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, Jackson peacefully passed away surrounded by family, according to a statement released early Monday morning. No cause of death has been officially confirmed at this time.
Nicknamed the “Zen Master” for his philosophical approach to leadership and mindfulness-based coaching methods, Jackson led the Lakers to five NBA championships during his two stints with the franchise (1999–2004, 2005–2011). His calm presence on the sidelines and mastery of the Triangle Offense helped shape dynasties not only in Los Angeles but also in Chicago, where he coached the Bulls to six NBA titles during the 1990s.
In total, Jackson’s unprecedented 11 NBA championships as a head coach remain a record that may never be matched.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a heartfelt tribute, stating, “Phil Jackson was more than a coach—he was a visionary, a teacher, and a giant in the history of our game. His legacy will live on through generations of players, coaches, and fans.”
Former players including Kobe Bryant (posthumously honored alongside Jackson in the Hall of Fame), Michael Jordan, and Shaquille O’Neal often credited Jackson as a central force behind their success and personal growth both on and off the court.
The Lakers organization is expected to honor Jackson with a pre-game tribute and moment of silence in their upcoming home game at Crypto.com Arena.
Phil Jackson is survived by his children and longtime partner. Plans for a public memorial service are expected to be announced in the coming days.
A legend. A leader. A loss beyond measure.
