Breaking News: Commanders Sign a Talented Player; Replacing Charles Leno Jr.?
The Washington Commanders are signing Cornelius Lucas, a name you may recognize.
It’s one of the Washington Commanders who’s returning.
Veteran lineman Cornelius Lucas is being re-signed by the Commanders to a one-year contract, according to Washington Post reporter Nicki Jhabvala.
Over the last four seasons with Washington, the ten-year offensive tackle has proven to be reliable when called upon to fill in.
Lucas is one of the Commanders’ prospective free agents that The Athletic ranked fourth, with the possibility of starting.
“Lucas has never been a first-team tackle on either side of the line with Washington, yet he is steady when called upon (31 starts) at left or right tackle,” The Athletic states. “Charles Leno Jr. might be eliminated from the team’s salary limit, and those predicting Washington’s movements will likely bring up selecting a long-term tackle on Day 2. Although Lucas’s effectiveness diminishes with increased exposure, if a youngster isn’t ready right away, he’s a respectable early-season option.”
The Super Talented player was currently the front-runner to start for the Commanders in the upcoming season after Leno Jr. was removed. But there’s a good chance the team selects a rookie in the draft who might challenge Lucas for a starting position.
