Collingwood Bombshell: Club Legend Alan Didak Returns as Senior Coach to Lead Magpies Into a Bold New Era
In a sensational move that has taken the AFL world by surprise, Collingwood Football Club has announced former fan favourite Alan Didak as its new senior coach. The 41-year-old, who dazzled supporters with his silky skills and flair during a decorated playing career with the Magpies, will take the reins effective immediately ahead of the 2025 AFL season.
Didak, a 218-game veteran who played for Collingwood between 2001 and 2013, returns to the club where he forged a reputation as one of the game’s most exciting and mercurial talents. Known for his audacious goals, pinpoint passing, and electric evasiveness, Didak is a name synonymous with Collingwood’s modern history — and now, he will write the next chapter from the coaches’ box.
In a press conference held at the AIA Centre this morning, Collingwood President Jeff Browne and CEO Craig Kelly jointly introduced Didak to the media and a gathering of passionate fans.
“Today, we welcome home one of Collingwood’s favourite sons,” Browne declared. “Alan Didak embodies the spirit of Collingwood: fearless, creative, relentless. We believe he brings a fresh perspective, a deep understanding of the modern game, and a genuine connection to our club’s proud traditions. He has the full backing of the board, the football department, and the playing group.”
Didak, visibly emotional but composed, said he was honoured and humbled to lead the club he loves.
“This club has given me everything,” Didak said. “It shaped me not just as a footballer, but as a person. To have the opportunity to come back and coach the team is the greatest privilege of my life. I can’t wait to get to work.”
After retiring from playing in 2013, Didak spent several years working in various coaching roles, including stints as a specialist forwards coach at Fremantle and Carlton. Most recently, he impressed as the senior coach of VFL side Port Melbourne, guiding them to a finals berth in 2024 with an innovative, attacking game style that caught the attention of AFL recruiters.
His appointment follows the sudden resignation of former coach Craig McRae, who stepped down last month citing personal reasons after leading the Pies to a premiership in 2023 and preliminary final appearance in 2024. While the club conducted an extensive search for McRae’s successor, Didak emerged as a compelling candidate thanks to his contemporary tactical philosophy and his strong relationships with many figures in the current Collingwood setup.
“Alan’s approach to coaching is modern, bold, and built on relationships,” Kelly said. “We knew from the moment we interviewed him that he understood what this club needed for its next chapter.”
Didak said his coaching style would be based on “freedom within structure,” encouraging players to express themselves while maintaining discipline and accountability.
“Football has evolved, but the fundamentals stay the same,” he said. “It’s about winning contests, applying relentless pressure, and making good decisions under pressure. But it’s also about letting players play to their strengths. I want our fans to see a team that plays brave, exciting football — the kind of football Collingwood people are proud of.”
He also emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent while maintaining the club’s position as a premiership contender.
“We have a really special group here,” Didak said. “There’s experience, leadership, and an exciting new wave of young players coming through. My job is to build on the strong foundation that’s been laid and take us to even greater heights.”
Reactions from the football world have been overwhelmingly positive. Former Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell, who played alongside Didak, said the appointment was “inspired.”
“Dids has always been a brilliant footy mind,” Maxwell said on SEN. “He was a creative genius as a player, and he sees the game differently. I think he’s going to bring a spark to the group.”
Supporters also flooded social media with messages of support, celebrating the return of a club hero.
“Welcome home, Dids! Can’t wait to see you lead the boys to glory,” one fan posted on Twitter, echoing the sentiments of many in the Magpie Army.
Didak’s first major task will be assembling his coaching staff and preparing for the upcoming AFL Draft and pre-season. Sources close to the club suggest he will look to bring in a mix of experienced assistants and innovative young minds to complement his leadership.
When asked about goals for the immediate future, Didak was clear.
“My focus is on building a resilient, united group that plays for each other and for the jumper,” he said. “Success will follow if we do that. I’m not going to put a ceiling on what we can achieve. We’re here to win.”
For Collingwood fans still basking in the recent successes but eager for the next era of dominance, the appointment of Alan Didak signals a bold new beginning. A legend returns — this time, to shape the future.
