Colorado Avalanche Recall Emerging Star William Dufour from AHL Affiliate Colorado Eagles
Denver, CO — June 7, 2025 — The Colorado Avalanche announced today that they have officially recalled promising young forward William Dufour from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Colorado Eagles.
Dufour, a 23-year-old native of Québec, is poised to bring an offensive spark and physical presence to the Avalanche lineup as the team continues its push toward the postseason. A standout during his time in the AHL, Dufour now has another opportunity to prove his readiness at the NHL level.
Blockbuster Arrival in the Mile High City
Dufour joined the Avalanche organization on March 7, 2025, as part of a headline-making trade with the New York Islanders. In the deal, Colorado acquired veteran center Brock Nelson and Dufour in exchange for defenseman Oliver Kylington, forward prospect Calum Ritchie, a 2026 first-round pick, and a conditional 2028 third-round selection.
The trade was seen as a win-now move for Colorado, but the acquisition of Dufour — a talented, high-upside forward born in 2002 — added a key long-term asset to the organization.
AHL Success and NHL Potential
Before the trade, Dufour had been a consistent contributor for the Bridgeport Islanders, New York’s AHL affiliate. Over three seasons with Bridgeport, he posted 44 goals and 47 assists in 169 games, developing into one of the more reliable two-way wingers in the league.
Since his assignment to the Colorado Eagles in March, Dufour has appeared in five games, including one playoff contest. Though limited in game action, his size (6’3″, 210 lbs), skill, and high hockey IQ have drawn praise from Avalanche coaches and front-office executives alike.
“William brings a strong blend of offensive instincts and physicality to our forward group,” said Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland. “We’ve been impressed with how quickly he’s adapted to our system, and we’re excited to give him another opportunity at the NHL level.”
A Second NHL Opportunity
Dufour made his NHL debut with the Islanders on January 18, 2023, but has yet to register his first point at the highest level. The Avalanche recall provides the young winger a second chance to make an impact and show that his AHL scoring touch can translate to the NHL.
With Colorado looking to add depth and energy to its forward corps during a critical stretch of the season, Dufour’s recall signals the organization’s confidence in his potential.
“William is a player we see as part of our future,” said Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar. “He’s worked hard in practice, he understands our system, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can bring to our group.”
Timing is Everything
The move comes at a pivotal time for the Avalanche, who are managing several minor injuries among their forward ranks and looking to inject fresh legs and skill into the lineup. Dufour’s size and scoring ability could be particularly valuable in a bottom-six role or on the power play.
Additionally, with several offseason decisions looming regarding pending restricted free agents and roster construction, the Avalanche will use this opportunity to further evaluate Dufour’s NHL readiness.
An Eye Toward the Future
Dufour’s recall aligns with the Avalanche’s broader organizational strategy of blending experienced veterans with dynamic young talent. With Colorado consistently competing among the NHL’s elite, maintaining a pipeline of emerging players like Dufour is critical to sustained success.
For Dufour himself, the call-up represents both validation and opportunity.
“I’m really excited and thankful for the chance,” Dufour said in a statement through the team. “I’ve been working hard all year, and I want to help the team any way I can.”
What Comes Next
As the Avalanche continue their playoff chase, Dufour will likely see action in the coming games, giving him a platform to stake his claim for a more permanent NHL role.
Whether contributing on the score sheet, providing physical play, or offering versatility up front, Dufour now has the opportunity every young player dreams of — and the Avalanche are eager to see what their 2002-born star can deliver.
