Former LSU Star Marcus Spears Found Dead in Baton Rouge, Suspect in Custody
The LSU Athletics community is in mourning following the tragic passing of former football star and beloved educator Marcus Spears, whose body was discovered in Baton Rouge on October 9, 2024. He was 55.
Spears, a dominant defensive end for the LSU Tigers during the early 2000s, was widely regarded as a cornerstone of the program’s success. His athleticism, leadership, and tenacity helped elevate LSU’s defense to national prominence. Revered by teammates and coaches alike, Spears left an indelible mark on Tiger Stadium and went on to dedicate his life to service and education after his playing days concluded.
Authorities confirmed that Spears had been reported missing days earlier, prompting a search that ended in heartbreak. A suspect, 19-year-old Jaymie Thomas, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following his football career, Spears committed more than two decades to education, serving as a special education facilitator within the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Students and colleagues described him as deeply compassionate, hardworking, and always willing to go the extra mile to support those in need.
“Marcus embodied the very best of LSU — both on the field and in the community,” said LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward. “He will be remembered not only for his impact on the game, but for the lives he changed through education and mentorship.”
Funeral services were held in Spears’ hometown of Addis, Louisiana, drawing a crowd of family, friends, former teammates, and students.
Marcus Spears’ legacy will forever be etched into the fabric of LSU — a true Tiger whose spirit will never be forgotten.
