The world of college basketball is mourning the loss of a true icon. Leonard Hamilton, the longtime head coach of the Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball team, has passed away at the age of 76.
Hamilton, who stepped down in March after an extraordinary 23-year tenure at Florida State, leaves behind a legacy defined by leadership, resilience, and a commitment to excellence both on and off the court. His passing marks the end of an era for not only Florida State University but the entire NCAA community.
Born on August 4, 1948, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Hamilton rose through the coaching ranks with stints at Oklahoma State and the University of Miami before taking the reins at FSU in 2002. During his time with the Seminoles, he became the program’s all-time winningest coach, securing historic milestones including the school’s first ACC Tournament title in 2012 and an ACC regular-season championship in 2020.
A three-time ACC Coach of the Year (2009, 2012, 2020), Hamilton was revered for his calm demeanor, defensive mastery, and ability to develop talent—sending numerous players to the NBA while instilling in them values that extended far beyond basketball.
“Leonard Hamilton was the embodiment of class, character, and leadership,” said FSU President Dr. Richard McCullough. “His legacy at Florida State is unmatched, and his impact on student-athletes, the university, and college basketball as a whole is immeasurable.”
Hamilton’s contributions will live on in the lives he influenced, the careers he shaped, and the standard of excellence he set. He was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a role model, and a cherished figure in the sport.
