Hockey Legend Gerry Cheevers, Former Boston Bruins Goaltender, Passes Away at 83 After Brief Illness

The hockey world is mourning the loss of legendary goaltender Gerry Cheevers, who passed away at the age of 83 after a brief illness. Cheevers was a cornerstone of the Boston Bruins during their golden era, playing a pivotal role in their Stanley Cup victories in 1970 and 1972.

Born on December 7, 1940, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, Cheevers began his hockey career with the St. Michael’s Majors of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1956. After a brief stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was claimed by the Boston Bruins in 1965. Cheevers quickly established himself as the team’s number one goaltender, known for his fearless play and clutch performances. In the 1971–72 season, he set an NHL record by going undefeated in 32 consecutive games, a feat that still stands today.

Beyond his on-ice achievements, Cheevers was renowned for his iconic mask, adorned with hand-painted stitches symbolizing each puck that struck him. This distinctive design made his mask one of the most recognized in hockey history and inspired future generations of goaltenders to personalize their equipment.

After retiring as a player, Cheevers transitioned to coaching, leading the Bruins from 1980 to 1985. Under his guidance, the team secured two first-place and two second-place finishes in their division. He later served as a color commentator and scout for the Bruins, further cementing his legacy within the organization.

The Boston Bruins organization, teammates, and fans remember him as a beloved member of the Bruins family. Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs stated, “Gerry was a true legend whose contributions to the team and the sport will never be forgotten. We send our deepest condolences to his family.”

Details about memorial services will be announced soon.
