Hockey World Mourns the Passing of Former Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Barry Trotz
The hockey community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Barry Trotz, former head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Trotz, 62, passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport.
Born on July 15, 1962, in Dauphin, Manitoba, Trotz began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Manitoba in 1984. He later served as head coach and general manager of the Dauphin Kings before joining the NHL as head coach of the Nashville Predators in 1998. Trotz led the Predators for 15 seasons, becoming the longest-tenured head coach in franchise history. In 2014, he joined the Washington Capitals, guiding them to their first Stanley Cup in 2018. Trotz concluded his NHL head coaching career with the New York Islanders, where he was relieved of his duties in May 2022 after the team missed the playoffs.
In July 2023, Trotz returned to the Nashville Predators organization as general manager, succeeding David Poile. His leadership was instrumental in the team’s success, and his commitment to building a competitive roster was widely praised.
