Kanon Catchings of BYU Cougars Men’s Basketball Sustains Long-Term Injury, Will Miss Remainder of Season
In a devastating blow to the BYU Cougars men’s basketball team, sophomore guard Kanon Catchings has sustained a long-term injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season. The injury, which occurred during a recent practice, has been confirmed by team officials as serious enough to require extended recovery time.
Catchings, who has been a key player for the Cougars this season, was averaging 12 points and 5 rebounds per game. His performance on both ends of the court, especially his defensive presence, had made him one of the standout players on BYU’s roster. His absence will leave a significant gap in the team’s lineup as they head into the crucial part of the season.
BYU’s head coach, Mark Pope, expressed his support for Catchings, calling him “an invaluable asset to our team.” Pope added, “Kanon has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and while we’re heartbroken for him, we’re committed to helping him through this recovery. His health and future are the most important thing right now.”
Catchings, for his part, has remained optimistic despite the setback. “I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to help my teammates for the rest of the season, but I’m focused on getting healthy and coming back stronger than ever,” he said in a statement.
The Cougars will now look to other players, including standout senior Alex Barcello, to step up in Catchings’ absence as they push through the remainder of their conference schedule and aim for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
With BYU’s postseason hopes hanging in the balance, the team’s resolve will be tested as they navigate the challenges of the season without one of their star players.
