Paul Hilton “Butch” Davis Jr., renowned for his influential coaching career in both collegiate and professional football, has tragically passed away at the age of 73. Davis was celebrated for his tenure as head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes from 1995 to 2000, where he revitalized the program and laid the foundation for its resurgence in the early 2000s.

Born on November 17, 1951, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Davis’s football journey began as a player at the University of Arkansas. Transitioning to coaching, he held assistant roles at various high schools before joining Oklahoma State University. His collaboration with Jimmy Johnson led him to the University of Miami as a defensive line coach, contributing to the Hurricanes’ 1987 national championship.

Davis’s NFL career included a pivotal role as defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, where he was instrumental in securing back-to-back Super Bowl victories in the early 1990s. He later served as head coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2001 to 2004. Returning to college football, Davis led the University of North Carolina Tar Heels from 2007 until 2011. In 2017, he took the helm at Florida International University (FIU), guiding the Panthers to three consecutive bowl games from 2017 to 2019.

In September 2022, Davis joined St. Thomas University as an analyst, working alongside his son, Drew, who serves as the Bobcats’ wide receiver and tight-ends coach. Reflecting on this collaboration, Davis remarked, “Like the Godfather, it’s like I’m out there, but they keep sucking me back in.”

Davis’s legacy is marked by his unwavering commitment to excellence and his profound influence on players and colleagues alike. He is survived by his family, including his son Drew, and leaves behind a lasting impact on the football community.
