Legendary Texas Tech Football Coach Eddie Biedenbach Passes Away at 79
The basketball community mourns the loss of Eddie Biedenbach, a former player and coach whose impact spanned decades. Biedenbach passed away on April 8, 2025, at the age of 79.
Playing Career
Born on August 12, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Biedenbach was a standout guard at North Carolina State University (NC State). He earned First-Team All-ACC honors twice, in 1966 and 1968. Professionally, he played for the Phoenix Suns during the 1968–69 NBA season, appearing in seven games.
Coaching Legacy
Transitioning to coaching, Biedenbach served as an assistant at NC State, contributing to the team’s 1974 NCAA championship. He later became the head coach at Davidson College (1978–1981) and the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNC Asheville) (1996–2013). At UNC Asheville, he led the Bulldogs to three NCAA tournament appearances, with notable performances in 2003 and 2012. His leadership earned him the Big South Coach of the Year three times.
Honors and Recognition
In recognition of his contributions, Biedenbach was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
