The LSU community and the college football world are mourning the loss of a true legend. Les Miles, former head coach of the LSU Tigers and one of the most recognizable faces in the sport, has died at the age of 71 following a brief illness, his family confirmed in a statement earlier today.
Miles, who led LSU from 2005 to 2016, became a household name with his passionate sideline presence, unconventional play-calling, and unwavering commitment to his players and the game. He guided the Tigers to a national championship in 2007, cementing his place in the program’s storied history. During his 12-year tenure in Baton Rouge, he compiled an impressive 114–34 record, won two SEC West titles, and consistently kept LSU among the top-ranked teams in the nation.
Known affectionately as “The Mad Hatter,” Miles was beloved not just for his success, but for his charisma, quirkiness, and deep respect for tradition. Beyond football, he was a mentor and role model, inspiring countless players both on and off the field.
