Who is Nico Williams?
Nico Williams is a Spanish professional footballer who plays a winger for Athletic Bilbao in Spain top flight league, La Liga. He is the younger brother of Inaki Williams whom they play together in the same club but his brother holds Ghanaian nationality due to the roots of his father.
Nico who is 21 years of age is often referred as a classic winger due to his technical abilities and dribbling skills in the upfront position of the field. Nico has passed through the youth ranks of Bilbao and his impressive stats at the youth level caught the attention of the senior team and was promoted in the year 2021 becoming a teammate to his older brother Inaki Williams.

Nicholas Williams Arthuer was born in 12 July 2002 at Pamplona, Navarre, Spain. He is the child of Maria Williams and Felix Williams who are of Ghanaian heritage. Nico Williams is the last born and the younger brother to Inaki in this family of four.
Family background and the journey to Europe.
Felix Williams and Maria Comfort Arthuer met and fell in love in the early 1990s in the city of Accra in Ghana. Coming from a humble background they couldn’t afford luxurious wedding ceremony so they performed a traditional marriage. Soon they started planning the future of their unborn kids and they conceived the idea of leaving Ghana for Europe.
This desperation of this young married couple could only be fulfilled by travelling through the Sahara desert and then by sea in order to reach Europe. The idea was to go to London but it was dismissed by Felix friend who offered some money for a journey to Spain. This journey became to be a regret as they ended up in the hands of human traffickers who robbed their belongings and abandoned them in the desert leaving them stranded. They had to walk enduring the suffering all through the desert.
After reaching Mellila a Spanish capital in North Africa they were arrested after they entered the Town illegally and by this time Maria was expectant carrying the pregnancy of Inaki. The spanish government started the process of deporting illegal immigrants. Days before being deported there came a lawyer, a Caritas lawyer who is believed to be a God sent and gave a solution to their problems. He said to them on court hearing say that you are from Liberia a country in war and you are seeking for political asylum.

Their settlement in Spain was assisted by Caritas a non governmental organisation inspired by Catholic faith and they were able to journey through the cities of Malaga to Madrid where they met a good samaritan by the name Inaki who was a father in a missionary church in the year 1994 and became the key figure to their life in Spain. Two months later Maria and Felix were blessed with a son and named him after this Catholic father Inaki and their family name Williams.

Nico Williams was born on 12 July 2002 and being a brother to Inaki he has always grown up looking at his older brother as a key pillar to his life and even today he always thanks him as he stood by him and even saw him as a dad when his dad had gone to London for ten years.
Nico was always a great admirer of his brother life and passion for football and he also followed that path. He narrated that his brother Inaki could officiate the games he played and took extra training with him.

The young starlet started his football journey at his home town back in 2012 before moving to Osasuna academy in the same year after a short spell with the club. Osasuna feared losing their brightest talent but they were prepared for the worst as Nico joined Athletic Bilbao academy in 2013.

Nico Williams’ first appearance in Spain national team was in Spain under 18 and has played for the under 19 and 21 ranks. Nico scored two goals in four appearance for the under 18 in 2020 and the following year was promoted to the under 19 and debuted on September. Nico received his first senior team call up during the 2022/23 UEFA nations league fixtures by coach Luis Enrique. He scored his first goal on a friendly game against Jordan on November 17 and was called up for FIFA world cup squad.
