The Ohio State University community is deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Tressel, former head football coach and current Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. Tressel, 72, died unexpectedly on April 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence both on the football field and in public service.​

Jim Tressel’s coaching journey began at Youngstown State University, where he served as head coach from 1986 to 2000. During his tenure, he led the Penguins to four NCAA Division I-AA national championships, establishing a reputation for building competitive teams. In 2001, Tressel became the head coach at Ohio State University, where he achieved remarkable success, including a national championship in 2002. His tenure at Ohio State was marked by multiple Big Ten championships and consistent appearances in major bowl games. ​

After retiring from coaching, Tressel continued his commitment to public service. In February 2025, he was appointed as the 67th Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, working alongside Governor Mike DeWine to serve the people of the state. ​

He was married to Ellen Tressel, and together they were actively involved in various charitable organizations, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action.
