Young gun from Geelong affirms desire for contract
Max Holmes, a young player for the Geelong Cats, has expressed his desire to stay with the team after his current contract expires.
Holmes’ current contract expires at the end of 2024.
The 20-year-old forward and midfielder, who was selected in the 2020 AFL draft, expressed his desire to remain with the team even though he is letting his management handle the specifics.
Yes, indeed, most absolutely. Yes, yes, yes,” Holmes responded to reporters during training on Monday.
I suppose we just need to work things out.
“My manager and ‘Mack,’ the Geelong football manager Andrew Mackie, will handle it.
Then, I suppose, I’ll be content when they’re satisfied.
“I just let my manager take the wheel and I stick to playing football, and I’m happy with that; I don’t really know much about what’s going on.”
“Round 1 is causing me more anxiety right now than my contract.”
“I’m just here to play football; I’ll let my manager handle the rest. I’m still under contract for this year.”
Holmes is getting ready for a season when he may play a variety of different positions, acknowledging that he is “getting thrown around a bit at the moment.” Holmes is coming off of a career-best year in which he played in 21 games, averaged 19.1 disposals per game, had 4.2 tackles per game, and kicked seven goals.
He played half-back in the preseason matches but mostly played on the wing during his first three seasons in the AFL, with sporadic game time in midfield.
