Boston Celtics Draft Amari Williams at No. 46: A Versatile Big Man with Huge Upside

In a move that could quietly shape the future of their frontcourt, the Boston Celtics selected Amari Williams with the No. 46 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The 7-foot British-born center from the University of Kentucky brings an intriguing mix of size, passing, and defensive potential to a Celtics team already stacked with championship aspirations.

Originally from Nottingham, England, Williams is not your typical second-round pick. After spending four seasons at Drexel, where he was a three-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Player of the Year, he transferred to Kentucky for his final collegiate season. There, he elevated his game under the national spotlight, averaging 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, while shooting over 56% from the field.

But what sets Amari apart isn’t just his stats—it’s how he plays the game.

“Amari is one of the most intelligent passing big men in this year’s draft class,” said Celtics VP of Basketball Operations Mike Zarren. “His court vision and feel for the game are well beyond what you normally see from someone his size.”

That vision was on full display during his season at Kentucky, where he totaled 115 assists—matching a school record for a 7-footer. Whether it was passing out of the post, facilitating from the top of the key, or threading bounce passes to cutters, Williams demonstrated a unique ability to make his teammates better.

On the defensive side of the ball, Williams is just as valuable. With a 7-foot-6 wingspan, he was a constant deterrent around the rim and proved he could switch onto smaller players when needed. His lateral quickness and timing make him a versatile defender who could thrive in Boston’s switch-heavy defensive schemes.

After being selected, Williams expressed his excitement in a short but emotional post on social media: “Beyond blessed! ☘️”

It’s a sentiment that matches the excitement many Celtics fans are feeling. With the team having just come off a deep playoff run, adding a player like Williams gives Boston more depth and flexibility, especially at a position where health and size have been concerns in recent years.

“We view Amari as a developmental piece with real upside,” said Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. “We think he fits our system really well. He’s got a high motor, high IQ, and plays unselfishly.”

The Celtics are expected to sign Williams to a two-way contract, giving him the chance to develop in the G League while also contributing at the NBA level when needed. His transition may take time, but the tools are clearly there. If he continues to grow, he could eventually become a rotational piece for a team that’s been masterful at developing its talent.

Draft analysts were also quick to praise the selection. ESPN’s Jay Bilas called it one of the “smartest value picks” in the second round, saying, “Williams is exactly the kind of under-the-radar player who could surprise people in two or three years. He’s long, skilled, and unselfish—a coach’s dream.”

As Boston continues to build around its core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Jrue Holiday, the addition of Williams gives them a young, intelligent big who could become an important piece for years to come.

Whether he becomes a defensive anchor, a passing hub in the second unit, or a high-IQ role player, one thing is clear: Amari Williams has the tools, the drive, and now—the opportunity.

Welcome to Boston, Amari. The future is bright.
