Ahmad Gana: From Entrepreneurship to Politics, A Young Nigerian’s Journey of Preparation and Ambition

By Tahir Ahmad and Fom Gyemsi

At a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is progressively formed by disputes about generational modification, innovation and youth involvement, Ahmad Muhammad Gana is emerging amongst a friend of young Nigerians looking for to move beyond requiring modification to taking part straight in the political procedure.

Born upon October 23, 1996, in Yobe State and raised in Kaduna, Gana’s course into public life did not start in political circles. Rather, it developed through education, entrepreneurship, neighborhood engagement and direct exposure to experienced public servants. Today, the entrepreneur and budding political star from Nguru Local Government Area explains his inspiration in basic terms: service and effect.

“I actually wish to make an effect in my neighborhoods and in individuals,” he informed Politics Digest in an interview.

His story is not yet among electoral triumph or public workplace. Rather, it is the profile of a young Nigerian intentionally constructing the experience, networks and financial self-reliance he thinks are needed for significant political involvement.

Born in Yobe, Gana invested many of his early years in Kaduna. He participated in Mary Travis Primary School, Uncle Bado Memorial College, Table School in Zaria and later on Grace College, where he finished his secondary education in 2014.

3 months after graduation, he took a trip to Sudan to study Economics, finishing his degree in 2018. He went back to Nigeria for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in between 2019 and 2020.

His pursuit of expert advancement continued. He registered for ICAN assessments, acquired a certificate in Conscious Capitalism from Babson University in the United States, and just recently finished a program at the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG), where he accepted evidence‑based decision‑making.

One expression from the school stuck with him: “In God we trust, however featured information.”

Long before politics entered into his identity, entrepreneurship formed Gana’s worldview. Today, he runs companies in cement and grains, however his entrepreneurial journey started in Sudan.

In his 2nd year at university, he determined a market space: products that were limited in your area however offered in Kano. He started sourcing and transferring them to Sudan, where need was high amongst South Sudanese clients.

Beginning business needed sacrifice. Sometimes, he diverted cash suggested for feeding and lodging into the endeavor. The danger settled, offering him monetary self-reliance as a trainee.

“I can not simply remain or wait on my moms and dads to offer me,” he stated.

The experience enhanced a belief main to his political approach: financial self-reliance matters, specifically for youths looking for to take part in public affairs.

Gana has actually never ever held optional workplace, nor has he functioned as a commissioner or unique advisor. His direct exposure to public organizations has actually been considerable.

He presently works as individual assistant to Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, a previous Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. He explains the experience as a crucial window into management and administration.

Throughout his NYSC year, he served at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), initially in procurement and later on in audit. He remembers being turned over with duties generally scheduled for long-term personnel, ultimately making a suggestion letter.

For a boy intrigued in the crossway of innovation and governance, the experience showed especially appropriate.

Ask Gana why he is drawn to politics and he consistently goes back to one word: effect.

His argument for youth involvement is partially generational. He keeps in mind that numerous older Nigerian leaders went into public life when they themselves were young. His case is not merely about changing older political leaders with more youthful ones.

For him, the genuine concern is whether political management is equaling a quickly altering world.

Expert system, robotics and automation, he argues, are improving economies. Management needs to for that reason consist of individuals who comprehend these improvements.

“You require to bring fresh individuals with fresh minds that can line up with the future,” he stated.

“Politics Is a Necessity”

Gana’s message to young Nigerians is not restricted to signing up with political celebrations.

“Politics is a need for every single person,” he stated.

He thinks political involvement needs to integrate civic engagement with education and financial self-reliance. Youths, he argues, need to obtain abilities, develop services and establish self-reliance instead of wait forever for federal government tasks.

He likewise firmly insists that those requiring modification can not stay outside the organizations where choices are made.

“If you are not on the table that can make a modification, then I do not believe what you are stating actually makes an effect,” he stated.

Gana traces his interest in philanthropy to his training. He viewed his moms and dads support loved ones and neighbours, and slowly embraced comparable routines.

He chooses to explain his interventions as financial investments in human capital. When individuals approach him with small company requirements– 50,000 or 100,000– he helps when possible.

Throughout Ramadan, he sends out food products to households in Nguru. He likewise links individuals to federal government programs and empowerment chances.

His directing concern is basic: what can he provide for his city government and individuals around him?

As his political participation broadens, Gana is developing networks beyond his instant neighborhood. He determines himself as a member of the City Boy motion and acts as its Director of Protocol and Logistics for the North‑East.

He is likewise a signed up member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He thought about objecting to in the last election cycle, he did not acquire an election type.

In the meantime, his political activities centre on networking, organisation and neighborhood engagement.

“You need to network large throughout the country,” he stated.

Where does Gana’s political journey lead? He does not yet state.

“I’m an enthusiastic individual. I am not that individual that will make that call. It’s my individuals that will make that call,” he stated.

For him, public workplace needs to not be an individual prize.

“It’s not about individual accomplishment, it has to do with social work.”

If he ultimately gets in full‑time civil service, Gana states he would entrust organization operations to others while maintaining tactical oversight. He does not mean to desert entrepreneurship, keeping in mind that political positions have actually repaired periods while organizations can supply long‑term stability.

Ahmad Muhammad Gana is not yet a political leader with an electoral record. His story is still among preparation– entrepreneurship, education, social work, political networking and direct exposure to public organizations.

Whether these experiences result in optional workplace will depend upon celebration procedures, political scenarios and citizens. In the meantime, his journey represents one path through which a brand-new generation is trying to go into Nigerian politics– not through instant projects, however through structure capability, networks and self-reliance.

At 29, Gana is still some range from whatever location he might eventually look for. His story, in the meantime, is less about arrival than about preparation– a young Nigerian screening whether entrepreneurship, innovation, social work and political involvement can form a trustworthy course towards public management.

United States tries to manage Ukraine’s attacks on Russia show a basic tactical detach

0

Entrepreneurship

In a current telephone call, Donald Trump prompted Volodymyr Zelensky to stop Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries. Whether a demand or a need, this appears, definitely initially glimpse, essentially various from the Biden administration’s policy of limiting making use of United States long-range rockets to strike targets inside Russia.

The United States president has actually validated his position mostly on financial premises. He argues that the routine attacks on Russian refining capability were adding to disturbances in diesel products and increasing fuel rates. The International Energy Agency has actually approximated that Ukraine struck one Russian oil refinery every 3 days over the very first 8 months of 2026.

Joe Biden’s constraints, by contrast, were validated by the United States mostly over issues about military escalation and the possibility that strikes deep inside Russia might provoke a broader fight in between Moscow and Nato.

Focusing exclusively on these specified validations conceals a much deeper connection. Both policies show an effort by Washington to form the limits of Ukraine’s military action to match wider American interests.

The significance of this ends up being clear when thinking about Ukraine’s refinery technique. Kyiv’s methodical project to target Russian oil facilities has to do with lowering Russia’s financial and military capability. Ukrainian authorities have actually explained the attacks as part of a determined technique to lower Russia’s financial prospective

These attacks were not symbolic. Refineries produce the gas, diesel and air travel fuel that support both military and civilian activity. It makes them a sensible target within a method of financial warfare. And the technique has actually flourished. The IEA report discovered that “fuel output is down by 20% compared to 2025 levels, while diesel production is approximated to have actually fallen by almost 30%”.

From a Ukrainian point of view, these refinery strikes are a tactically important ways of enforcing expenses on Russia without needing expensive and massive offending operations along the front.

This context is essential due to the fact that it highlights what is really at stake in Trump’s efforts to stop the project. It was not directed at an inadequate or indiscriminate kind of violence. It was targeted at among Ukraine’s more effective projects versus Russian facilities.

Zelensky supposedly turned down Trump’s demandinforming the Wall Street Journal’s editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker, on the sidelines of the United Nations basic assembly conference on September 23, that “our lives are more crucial than the rate of energy”.

Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker, speaking with Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, at the UN general assembly.

The argument in between the 2 leaders shows their contending conceptions of tactical success. For Zelensky, interrupting Russian refining capability damages the financial structures of Russia’s war effort. For Trump, the very same attacks presumably create unfavorable repercussions in the kind of greater energy rates and fuel lacks.

The concern is not whether the strikes matter– however which impacts should be prioritised: pressure on Russia or stability in international energy markets?

Entrepreneurship What this informs us about United States diplomacy

This exposes a crucial theoretical point about escalation and restraint. Biden’s limitations showed a standard understanding of escalation rooted in military interaction in between significant powers.

For Biden, the threat lay in provoking Russian retaliation versus a background of Russian hazards to strike back with nuclear weapons– or producing the understanding of direct United States participation in attacks on Russian area.

Trump’s position indicate a wider conception of escalation by not being restricted to Russia itself, however rather where financial connection constitutes its own path of tactical threat. Refinery attacks might not increase the possibility of direct military conflict. They can produce effects that spread out through worldwide energy markets and produce political expenses for federal governments far gotten rid of from the battleground as they are threatening to do by raising fuel expenses for customers quickly before an essential election.

Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky meet on the sidelines of the UN general assembly,

Donald Trump fears that Ukraine striking Russian oil refineries will require up world energy costs.

The contrast for that reason recommends that the Biden and Trump administrations vary less in their desire to constrain Ukraine than in the threats they prioritise. Biden looked for to handle military escalation with a nuclear-armed foe. Trump looks for to handle the financial repercussions of a lengthy dispute.

Both positions stem from the very same underlying truth: Ukraine’s military goals are not similar to those of the United States.

The refinery project shows this especially plainly. What Ukraine views as an extremely efficient methods of degrading Russian capability can all at once be seen in Washington as a source of more comprehensive tactical threat.

Eventually, the refinery strikes expose that the politics of assistance is inseparable from the politics of restraint. Whether through limitations on long-range strikes or pressure to prevent targeting Russian energy facilities, succeeding United States administrations have actually tried to form not just how much assistance Ukraine gets however likewise how that assistance is utilized.

The genuine connection in between Biden and Trump lies not in their particular policies. It’s about their shared presumption that Washington keeps a genuine function in specifying the appropriate limitations of Ukrainian military action.

And this is the obstacle for American diplomacy, especially in the Trump period. The more the United States withdraws from a shared understanding of interests with its allies, the more it will discover that it ends up being more difficult to manage them.

Huawei Pioneers a New Computing Architecture for the AI Era: Making One Million Processors Work as One Computer– Summary of Roundtable Meeting Between Eric Xu and International Media Outlets on September 17

SHANGHAI, CHINA– Media OutReach Newswire — 30 September 2026– Throughout HUAWEI CONNECT on September 17, 2026, Eric Xu (Huawei’s Rotating Chairman) and Dr. Liao Heng (Chief Scientist of HiSilicon) had a Q&A session with reporters of media outlets to talk about Huawei’s Peerium Computing Architecture for the AI period in addition to UnifiedBus(UB).

data-image-height=”0″>1 (6).png

At last year’s HUAWEI CONNECT, Eric Xu offered a keynote speech and launched Ascend chips and their roadmap (consisting of the 950, 960, 970, and SuperPoDs and SuperClusters ). He likewise revealed the open release of the UnifiedBus procedure.

At this year’s HUAWEI CONNECT, Huawei revealed the Ascend 950 and the Atlas 950 SuperPoD. While the market is discussing SuperPoDs or supernodes, the methods of making these items vary extremely. The secret of SuperPoDs has to do with enabling a number of thousand or perhaps 10s of countless processors to work as one computer system.

Today, Huawei revealed a SuperPoD based upon the Ascend 950 chip. The SuperPoD is powered by a brand-new computing architecture that Huawei has actually originated. This architecture now can make one million processors work as one computer system. This architecture is called Peerium, and it can accomplish strong scaling to the million-processor level through embedded parallelism, merged memory dealing with, and peer-to-peer adjoin. It extends the parallelism paradigm of Turing with the intro of Nested BSP (Nested Bulk Synchronous Parallel).

This architecture likewise extends the von Neumann single-machine architecture and overruns the master-slave style paradigm that has actually dominated for years. Considered that the readily available innovations in the market might not support this architecture, Huawei created a crucial adjoin innovation– UnifiedBus. Eventually, one million processors can really work as one bigger computer system.

UnifiedBus is a high-speed bus that utilizes an open procedure to scale without a limitation to link CPUs, NPUs, memory, SSDs, user interface cards, and changes. With UnifiedBus, peer-to-peer adjoin is attained throughout calculate, storage, and networking. This essentially overruns the standard master-slave architecture.

The Atlas 950 SuperPoD is an item built on the Peerium Computing Architecture. A SuperCluster with 256,000 computing cards is presently being released and evaluated.

Q: Dr. Liao, your paper pointed out a SuperPoD that’s comprised of 256,000 cards. Is that the ceiling of your innovation? Can you inform us more about market need for your items?

Liao Heng: 256,000 or approximately 200k, this number is not an approximate number.

Of all, the function of these big clusters is for training. It has a hardware facilities that can support the training of structure designs, which today are currently in the 5T specification variety.

Over the next 2 years, there will be approximately 6 or 7 frontier AI laboratories in China, and all will target at training structure language designs of sizes varying from 10 to 40 trillion criteria. These numbers sort of compare to the memory capability and the size of the SuperPoD. You require such a scale of facilities to train these designs.

The 2nd thing is that in China, a lot of information centers have a nationwide intend on this power grid. 200,000 is a fairly conservative number, offered the style of the power shipment system in a single self-governing zone and single information center school.

As I stated, everyone should be rather knowledgeable about the AI design race that’s occurring around the world. And in China, there are at least 3 or 4 tier-1 gamers that are currently well acknowledged and have actually attained tier-1 status.

Q: What are your strategies to motivate Chinese design service providers to utilize Ascend chips for training?

Eric Xu: For the Ascend 950, we initially introduced the 950PR to the marketplace. It’s mainly utilized for AI reasoning, and presently the overall volume of supply offered in the market is not huge. The SuperPoDs based upon the Ascend 950DT are primarily utilized for AI training. Now, they are under screening, and their massive supply will begin at the end of this year or early next year. We are having substantial discussions and conversations with AI design companies. The screening outcome of utilizing the Ascend 950DT for training is respectable. I think that beginning with next year, a great deal of AI design training will be based upon SuperPoDs that utilize the Ascend 950DT. I believe at the end of the day, it’s not about how tough we are going to press design companies, however about just how much supply capability we will have. We can just provide based upon just how much that’s produced. And we hope the worth chain will broaden its capability much faster to increase supply.

Q: What is Huawei’s take on current calls by leading AI design service providers in the United States to decrease AI advancement?

Eric Xu: We require to take a look at the level and cadence of AI advancement in China and the United States. AI designs in China are mainly open-source designs and their development is fairly transparent. If we take a look at the mainstream design service providers in the United States, they have more calculating power, so possibly just they themselves understand where they remain in regards to the level of elegance of their designs. The marketplace sensation about AI dangers may be weaker in China than in the United States. Design suppliers in China require to accelerate their rate to reach a level where they might likewise feel the dangers from AI advancement. And after that, possibly they will feel the like the leading United States design suppliers. I constantly think that we require to strike a balance in between driving AI advancement and handling AI dangers. At least, the bottom line is we require to make sure AI for excellent, not AI for evil.

Q: Does Huawei have strategies to bring the Atlas 950 SuperPoD to other markets outside China? If yes, which markets are you going to target? Can you show us information about your market share in China? What is your take on China’s push for chip self-sufficiency?

Eric Xu: Considering that we do not have adequate capability to even please the need in China, we do not have strategies to broaden to the worldwide market in a fully-fledged method. Certainly, there are numerous nations that have extremely strong need. We are doing some screening, and we are supplying some supply to those nations, however the volume is rather minimal.

Now, it’s quite difficult to gather information about the market share of NVIDIA in China. Based on the information we have actually gathered, Ascend has actually exceeded NVIDIA.

China’s push for chip self-sufficiency is an unavoidable course forward. China is a nation of 1.4 billion individuals and it’s a commercial powerhouse, so the method individuals work and live is carefully connected to chips. Chinese individuals have an eager sense of seriousness, and will decline a future in which others choose whether we can have access to particular items. Despite the fact that our chips might be less sophisticated, a minimum of their supply is ensured, so that you do not need to fret about chip supply day in and day out. I believe that’s definitely the course forward. For the Chinese federal government, for the domestic market, and for Huawei, the course forward is unquestionably to promote complete self-sufficiency in regards to chips and the whole semiconductor worth chain. We likewise think this will come true eventually.

Mukesh Ambani, who held the title of India’s wealthiest individual because 2023, now follows carefully behind. The Forbes Billionaires database suggests that the space in between the 2 industrialists stays narrow, showing the competitive nature of India’s top-tier business environment.

The Adani Group includes 10 noted entities, consisting of flagship Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, and Adani Green Energy. The business’s current acquisition of tactical port centers in Southeast Asia has actually supplied an increase to its assessment, contributing straight to Adani’s individual net worth.

The power and energy sections of the corporation have actually likewise played a definitive function. As India increases its concentrate on energy shift, Adani Green Energy has actually broadened its capability, intending to turn into one of the world’s biggest renewable resource manufacturers. While these financial investments are anticipated to yield long-lasting returns, the instant influence on the business’s share rate has actually been more conservative compared to the quick increase seen in the Adani portfolio.

Dependence’s retail department, which is the biggest in India, continues to control the domestic customer market. The slowing development in the international oil-to-chemicals sector has actually tempered the appraisal of Ambani’s tradition service. Regardless of this, Ambani stays a dominant force in the international wealth index, with his fortune regularly ranking amongst the leading fifteen people worldwide on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index

The competition in between Adani and Ambani represents a wider pattern in the Indian economy, where big corporations are significantly accountable for the country’s facilities and digital advancement. Most notably, he has great numbers. Last seasoon, the Super Eagles star contributed 15 objectives and 10 helps in 35 video games throughout all competitors. If he continues with this pattern, he will likely have some huge clubs knocking on his door in the coming months.

There may be a stumbling relocation for a relocation. That concern is his injury history. Usor has an old issue that would indicate prospective suitors will need to look carefully at his medical record before dedicating a considerable transfer cost.

Football transfers Usor’s Injury History Is a Concern

The LASK winger suffered a cruciate ligament injury in October 2024, an injury that kept him out for around 265 days, making sure that he missed out on 35 matches.

He suffered another knee obstacle in 2026 when he sustained a meniscus tear. That history will undoubtedly draw in attention from clubs thinking about a significant financial investment.

Usor’s video game is constructed around explosive velocity, turnabouts and direct performing at protectors. Those motions put significant needs on the knees, making his long-lasting physical fitness a fundamental part of any prospective transfer evaluation.

Presently, when you enjoy him play, he use a band simply listed below his left knee, however that is not for style, it is utilized to monitor his kneesIt implies that there is a considerable threat of a future injury.

For the majority of leading clubs, that understand this, it would suggest comprehensive medical checks before making a dedication. Case in point was Victor Boniface when air conditioner Milan wished to sign him in 2015. They had concerns with his injury history, so they took out of the offer.

Football transfers It Does Not Rule Out a Big Transfer For The Super Eagles Star

Usor’s injury record ought to not be analyzed as a reason that he can not make a significant relocation. Football has lots of examples of gamers returning from severe knee injuries and consequently finishing prominent transfers.

Florian Wirtz is among the clearest examples. The German suffered a cruciate ligament tear in March 2022 and invested a number of months on the sidelines. He ultimately went back to turn into one of Europe’s finest young gamers, assisting Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga before making a ₤ 100 million transfer to Liverpool in 2025, possibly increasing to ₤ 116 million with add-ons.

Leroy Sané likewise finished a significant transfer to Bayern Munich after suffering a major cruciate ligament injury throughout his time at Manchester City.

What will matter most for Usor now is showing that he can remain fit while keeping the explosive qualities that make him appealing.

His efficiencies for LASK have actually currently supplied proof of his capability, while his development with Nigeria has actually provided him another platform to display those qualities.

His objective versus Madagascar on his Super Eagles launching just enhanced the case for his capacity. The difficulty is to sustain that level.

Prospective suitors will wish to see whether he can create an extended run of looks without another substantial problem. The longer he stays in shape and efficient, the much easier it ends up being for clubs to look beyond the injury history.

Construction’s next productivity challenge isn’t technology: it’s fragmentation

AI

Walk onto almost any construction project today and you’ll find an industry that has invested heavily in digital technology. BIM models guide delivery, drones monitor progress, mobile apps connect teams on site and cloud-based project management platforms have become commonplace. Yet despite this investment, projects still lose valuable time every day. The information often exists. What teams often lack is the context and authority needed to act and deliver on it.

Work stalls while a design package awaits client approval, and a subcontractor waits for an executed contract. Procurement pauses while someone searches for the latest version of a document, and an AI assistant is asked about a project change, but the decision and supporting documents sit in systems it cannot access. The programme slips, preliminaries continue and the cost rarely sits neatly with the person holding the decision.

Across every stage of a project, work doesn’t usually stop because technology has failed. It stops because the right information hasn’t reached the right people to keep the project moving. As the industry continues to focus on productivity, construction’s problem is no longer simply access to technology. It’s about coordinating the right information, authority and action across the project team, while ensuring the AI tools teams increasingly use can access the right project context without fiction too.

Every project creates a temporary company

In construction, every project effectively creates a temporary company. Clients, designers, contractors, suppliers and consultants bring together different people, systems and processes, yet they must operate as one team until the project is complete. That ability to combine specialist expertise is one of the industry’s greatest strengths, but collaboration across so many organisational boundaries inevitably creates challenges.

Most organisations have digitised their own operations. But even where the handoff is digital, ownership, status and the next decision are often unclear, and the steps can still be surprisingly manual. Contracts wait for review and signature, variations disappear into inboxes and important documents are stored across multiple locations. Teams spend valuable time checking whether they have the latest version or whether the next stage of work has been approved.

Valuable project history, including decisions, approvals, previous contracts and lessons learned, often exists somewhere. It simply sits passively instead of informing the next task. The impact is significant: 2026 research from Procore and Dodge Construction Network found that construction professionals across the UK and Ireland spend an estimated 18% of project time searching for information, equivalent to more than eight working weeks a year.

The issue is not a lack of digital tools. It is that each platform can create another place where information lives, making it harder for teams across different organisations to stay aligned. The answer is not to ask every company on a project to use the same software. Instead, it’s to make the technology they already rely on work better together, while keeping information with the organisation that owns it.

Keeping project context connected

On a typical construction project, critical information is held in designs, contracts, specifications, emails and shared folders, often spread across multiple applications. Connecting these sources becomes even more important as AI enters project workflows.

New research sponsored by Dropbox illustrates the wider challenge: 74% of US business professionals manually move AI-generated work between applications at least three times during a typical AI-assisted working day. Each transfer adds work and creates another opportunity for important details to be lost.

AI Related Information

For construction teams, this makes reliable access to the full project record essential. AI can help teams navigate project information, but only when it has access to the right content and context. Without that, the same fragmentation that makes information difficult for people to find can leave AI producing confident answers based on an incomplete picture.

When tools are connected and permission-aware, AI-powered search can help teams find relevant project information quickly while maintaining control over who can access it. Teams can ask questions in natural language and find what they need wherever they are working, with a clear link back to the original documentation.

However, an AI-generated answer should remain a starting point, not the decision itself. Where it affects cost, contracts, design, safety or compliance, it must be checked against the source, reviewed by a qualified person and recorded in the authoritative project system.

Nor can better-connected information solve every constraint facing construction. Procurement models, changing teams, physical constraints and commercial incentives all influence delivery, while technical reviews, negotiations, compliance checks and stakeholder approvals remain necessary. Technology’s role is more focused: removing avoidable delays without removing necessary oversight.

The distinction is clear: time required for competent engineering review is necessary; time spent locating a request, identifying the decision maker or searching for a signed contract buried in an email thread is not.

Removing this avoidable friction reduces the risk of teams working from outdated information and creates a clearer record of what was issued, reviewed and approved. When projects bring together multiple independent organisations, moving information with its provenance, permissions and approval status intact, becomes just as important as the information itself.

The next phase of digital construction

The next gains in construction will come not from replacing the tools organisations already use, but from connecting them so people and AI can work from the right project context. Client CDEs, ERPs and specialist field platforms can remain responsible for authoritative records, while a secure document management platform helps teams find trusted, up-to-date content across them.

So, whether reviewing a design authored in Autodesk, receiving site evidence captured in a field platform, executing a contract with Dropbox Sign or connecting Dropbox content within ChatGPT to summarise a report, teams can work more effectively while authoritative records remain in the systems responsible for them.

Construction has spent the last decade digitising information. The next challenge is making that information connected and durable, so that it’s discoverable, governed by the right permissions and retained beyond the life of the project. That gives every organisation, and the AI supporting it, the context needed to reduce delays and keep projects moving, while people remain in control of the decisions that matter.

The data center boom continues apace, but projects face mounting obstacles

0

Cybersecurity

The U.S. data center boom has entered a new, contradictory phase.

On the one hand, both data center construction activity and credible forecasts for near-term capacity additions to the electric grid to serve data centers remain robust. The Electric Power Research Institute, for example, said in February that data centers will represent up to 17% of U.S. electricity demand in 2030 and as much as 20% in 2035.

On the other hand, data center and utility infrastructure projects face a host of challenges. These include both physical constraints, such as equipment and labor shortages, as well as mounting public opposition driven by concerns about large-scale computing facilities’ impact on water supplies, the cost and reliability of power and natural gas supplies, and the quality of life in host communities.

The upshot is that even some data center development projects advanced enough to appear in utility load forecasts with a named hyperscaler attached are not certain to move forward.

Near Grand Rapids, Michigan, for example, a Microsoft data center touted by Consumers Energy faces an uncertain future amid local permitting delays.

“[Data centers] are running into physical problems that are manifesting as market problems, political problems, regulatory problems and ultimately problems down on the ground.”

Blake Nixon

President and CEO of Geronimo Power

Another Microsoft-backed data center in Vineland, New Jersey, was recently hit with a $1 million fine for running dozens of gas-powered generators without the proper permits, and ordered to obtain them within 45 days or shut down.

A proposed Google data center that would interconnect in Xcel Energy’s Minnesota territory faces a court-ordered work stoppage to allow time for environmental review.

Even projects that sought to circumvent interconnection delays by building off-grid generation have seen setbacks. Last week, Oracle moved to protect itself financially from the delay or cancellation of Project Jupiter, a massive, 2.5-GW data center campus planned for Doña Ana County, New Mexico, after state regulators blocked a gas pipeline proposed to serve it.

Data center opposition “has reached a pitch I have never seen before in my 20-plus years in development,” Blake Nixon, president and CEO of Geronimo Power, told Utility Dive in an interview.

This spring, officials in Nobles County, Minnesota, shot down a proposal by Geronimo to build a 400 MW “data park” there, despite the company’s efforts at community outreach. Now, Nixon said his team is considering alternative sites in nearby communities.

“[Data centers] are running into physical problems that are manifesting as market problems, political problems, regulatory problems and ultimately problems down on the ground,” he said.

In May, Goldman Sachs said only 50%-60% of planned data center capacity will come online as expected in the next two years amid delays and cancellations.

And while the 36 GW of capacity added to the development pipeline in the first quarter of 2026 sounds impressive, that’s down 19% from the last quarter of 2025 as developers “continue to shift their focus to existing … pipelines in the face of an increasingly challenging development and regulatory environment,” Caitlin Connelly, a senior analyst with Wood Mackenzie, said in a July note.

Experts say these developments raise questions about just how much data center load will come online in the near term — injecting unwelcome uncertainty into utility planning cycles that must look years, even decades, into the future.

Working around grid constraints with flexibility, BYO capacity

It’s increasingly difficult for developers of large-scale data center campuses to find sites with the hundreds of megawatts, let alone gigawatts, of spare grid capacity they expect their projects to need at full build-out.

In the PJM Interconnection, real or perceived power scarcity is a major driver of both local opposition and top-down political backlash to the industry. The independent market monitor in July blamed data centers for 38% of charges at the most recent capacity auction.

The Democratic governors of Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Jersey have taken action in recent months to push regulators to require data centers to bring more generation and transmission capacity online.

These moves are not only in PJM states with Democratic governors. Power scarcity and cost concerns have triggered organized opposition and political backlash to data centers in places developers until recently believed were sympathetic to their cause, like Texas and Utah.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R, successfully pushed for a sweeping pause on data center grid interconnections that threatens up to 20% of the total U.S. development pipeline, BloombergNEF said earlier this month.

Utilities and data centers are responding in several ways.

The most straightforward is through “bring your own capacity” arrangements in which computing facilities colocate with new generation or finance local capacity additions.

Some of these arrangements are massive: OpenAI agreed earlier this month to take 8 GW of the capacity from a planned 10 GW power generation project in Ohio that includes 9.2-GW gas assets. The facility, which is being pursued by Japan’s SoftBank Group and the U.S. Department of Energy, would be the country’s largest generation source if built.

If not, that title would go to Amazon’s proposed 7.7-GW gas-fired power plant in West Texas, which would also be larger than the current titleholder, Washington state’s 6.8-GW Grand Coulee hydroelectric dam.

Smaller-scale capacity procurements are also in the works, like Google’s “first-of-its-kind” deal with Voltus for 100 MW of virtual power plant capacity in PJM.

Hoses and pumps and barriers line part of the Anderson Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River, on Sept. 15, 2026, in Secaucus, New Jersey after thousands of gallons of diesel fuel spilled from a nearby AI data center. The incident has added to public anger over data centers.

Elsewhere, utilities and data centers are pursuing asset-light alternatives using software to find previously untapped headroom on the grid or to ramp down computing loads during periods of peak demand.

Last fall, for example, Portland General Electric said that by using GridCARE’s AI-powered load modeling tool, it had freed up 80 MW of interconnection headroom  — about a fifth of the 400 MW of data center load it expects to add by 2029.

“We are seeing more interest from both data center developers and regional stakeholders (utilities, regulators, policymakers) to embrace flexible loads, which can accelerate the interconnection process,” Anuja Ratnayake, EPRI’s emerging technologies executive, said in an email. Ratnayake leads EPRI’s DCFlex initiative, which aims to standardize data center designs and utility programs around flexibility.

And the United States still has load pockets with headroom to spare — no flexible interconnection or software wizardry required — though they’re increasingly rare.

Data center developers and prospective tenants are looking past mature, power-constrained markets like Northern Virginia and toward renewables-rich regions with relatively low wholesale power prices, such as the northern Plains states.

Some utilities and developers are also moving towards smaller data centers that could potentially soak up spare capacity without requiring much if any new generation, Louis Finkel, senior vice president of government relations for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, said in an email.

“Some co-ops are actively seeking these types of loads,” Finkel said. “A smaller-scale facility could be sited where there is excess capacity on the system, increasing grid utilization and potentially putting downward pressure on rates.”

Behind the meter or in front, projects face same equipment backlogs

In places without sufficient grid headroom, some data centers are looking to avoid multiyear interconnection queues and power up off-grid, at least temporarily.

Cleanview, a grid data platform, counted more than 90 GW of behind-the-meter capacity across 59 large-scale data center projects earlier this year. As much as 13 GW of that total could come online by the end of 2027, Cleanview says.

But Andrew Maxson, an EPRI program manager, told Utility Dive these projects remain at the mercy of stretched supply chains for power and electrical equipment. These backlogs are continuing years after the COVID-19 pandemic first pushed them to the breaking point, and the delays affect both grid-connected and behind-the-meter projects, he said.

The typical customer now waits two to three years for standard power transformers — which must be custom-built — and generator step-up units, according to Fluxco, an electrical equipment marketplace. The situation is unlikely to improve before 2027, when significant new U.S. manufacturing capacity is expected to come online, Fluxco said.

The story is much the same for power generation equipment. GE Vernova, the top U.S.-based gas turbine manufacturer, is quoting delivery dates in the early 2030s for a backlog exceeding 100 GW. The backlogs at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Siemens Energy, the other two major gas turbine manufacturers, are slightly shorter but still measured in years rather than months.

“Skilled labor shortages have … emerged as a binding constraint on data center development and the energy infrastructure that serves it, rivaling land availability, permitting and energy supply as a top concern.”

Andrew Maxson

Program Manager, Electric Power Research Institute

Customers are responding with “[gigawatt]-scale procurement announcements for technologies such as fuel cells and engines, once considered unwieldy for large-scale deployment,” Maxson said in an email.

Share prices of Caterpillar, an industrial conglomerate with a fast-growing gas and diesel engine business, have doubled since last July. Bloom Energy, a fuel cell manufacturer, has seen its stock rise tenfold over the same period.

Unlike larger combined-cycle generating units, which require high-voltage transformers, smaller generating units can connect to the grid at medium voltages, Nina Sadighi, founder of Eradeh Power Consulting, said on a June 3 webinar organized by Wood Mackenzie.

The units themselves are less supply-constrained, with orders being booked today for 2028 delivery by customers looking to power up before receiving firm interconnection, she added.

Two-year waits are not ideal for data center users focused on speed to power above all else, but they’re preferable to longer waits for a grid connection, even after accounting for the higher cost of setting up what’s effectively an always-on microgrid, Sadighi said.

“You need to factor … the cost of a facility coming online a year late,” she said.

BloombergNEF’s most recent count of 74 GW of announced on-site gas power capacity at U.S. data centers would serve about 48 GW of facility load after accounting for equipment redundancy, said Mark Daly, the research provider’s head of technology and innovation.

“If the grid can only connect around 10 GW of new data center demand per year (near the current record in the US), then our data center demand forecast sees enough data center power demand for all this onsite gas to have something to serve,” Daly said in an email.

“Whether it is actually built on that timeline is a different question,” he added.

Labor constraints, public opposition complicate forecasts

Generating capacity, electrical supply chains and grid headroom aren’t the only meaningful constraints on data center development, however. Even after mitigating those issues, utilities face additional barriers to accurate near-term load and resource forecasting.

Finding qualified people to build computing facilities and install the massive amounts of computing and electrical equipment needed to run them is a big challenge, for example.

Associated Builders and Contractors, a construction industry trade group, said in 2024 — before the AI-fueled data center building boom began in earnest — that the U.S. was short about 500,000 construction workers.

Though data centers earn more media attention than other types of large construction projects, they’re competing for specialized workers like electricians and pipefitters with semiconductor factories, battery plants and even power generation projects — often “in the same regions and during the same construction windows,” EPRI’s Maxson said.

“Skilled labor shortages have … emerged as a binding constraint on data center development and the energy infrastructure that serves it, rivaling land availability, permitting and energy supply as a top concern,” he said.

Those issues are colliding with stiffening public pushback to create a challenging development environment, according to recent polling.

Seventy-one percent of Americans would oppose a data center being built nearby, according to a Heatmap News poll fielded in May — up nearly 30 percentage points from September. By Heatmap’s count, local opposition killed at least 20 proposed data center projects in the first quarter of 2026, the most of any quarter on record.

Organized opposition to data centers and related infrastructure has reached places — and political leaders — that were previously welcoming to data center development.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, R, in May called on data center developers to increase their efforts to safeguard air quality, water resources and other utility ratepayers in his state. The celebrity investor behind a controversial 9-GW project in northern Utah subsequently slimmed down his proposal as the host county enacted a six-month moratorium on data center builds.

In Texas, Abbott directed state regulators in June to ensure data centers “fully fund the costs of electric infrastructure needed to serve their operations, preventing those costs from being passed on to residential ratepayers.” Weeks later, the governor effectively halted new data center interconnections until an audit of the queue could be completed.

As with labor and supply chain bottlenecks, both grid-connected and behind-the-meter data centers face state and local permitting challenges, EPRI’s Maxson said.

“Permitting is layered with federal, regional, and local constraints,” he said. These constraints “may be more difficult down that chain, meaning that regional constraints are on top of federal ones, and then local ones are on top of both of those.”

Why Hitting My Girlfriend Was the Only Choice I Had Left

Swimming

I slapped my girlfriend. Sometimes, when you’re pushed past your limit, you just snap. All the same, I know physical violence is frowned upon, but in my defense, this was the first time anything like this had ever happened in the year we’ve been dating.

Ever since the incident, our relationship has taken a different turn. I don’t know if we are dating or if I should wait. We haven’t spoken since. I’ve tried reaching out, but she refuses to listen or give me a chance to explain. Even her mom has told her to show me some mercy, but still.

FOLLOW US ON WHATSAPP CHANNEL TO RECEIVE ALL STORIES IN YOUR INBOX

Here is how it all started.

Recently, I started pulling away from my girlfriend. It wasn’t because I fell out of love with her. Far from it. I was completely overwhelmed by situations beyond my control, and I just couldn’t keep up with constant communication. I didn’t even have the mental energy to text “I love you.”

Our communication fell apart for a long time. It took the sudden realization that she was entertaining another man to wake me up to reality and what I stood to lose.

I found out she went to visit him. When I asked, she lied and said she went to visit her sister. I took the excuse at face value at first. She even said, “You can call her, we went at 6 PM and came back at 11 PM.” But I knew something was off. When I checked her phone, there were no messages with her sister and no recent activity in her inbox.

She kept lying in my face. I was at her place and I knew that if I stayed much longer I’d unleash my anger, so I walked out on her.

Later, we sat down to talk. I told her that if she kept lying, I would have no choice but to end the relationship, and I knew she didn’t want that. “If you tell me the truth, I might even forgive you. I just want the truth.”

She finally confessed. She said she started seeing the other guy because I made her feel neglected and abandoned. Since I wasn’t giving her attention, she turned to him.

I was ready to forgive her and move past it, but before doing that, I asked to see their chat history. In just three weeks of talking, their conversations had already turned sexual. She screen-shared their chats with me to show the chats, but every time she got to the sexual parts, she scrolled past them rapidly so I couldn’t read them. But I caught glimpses of every single line. Her constant attempt to hide those specific parts is what set me off.

I took a car straight to her house and demanded she hand over the phone. When she saw me through the door, she locked me out. She said she wouldn’t open up because she was scared I was going to beat her. I had no intention of laying a hand on her, so I waited outside on the doorstep until she finally felt safe enough to let me in.

As soon as she opened the door, I grabbed the phone and opened WhatsApp. Every single one of those chats had been deleted. That was what set me off the most, alongside the fact that she tried to hide the phone from me.

While I was standing there fuming, she said, “I love you. It’s you I love, but I was lonely and you weren’t giving me attention. You told me to come clean. If you knew you were going to break up with me anyway, why did you tell me to be honest? I made a mistake by telling you the truth.”

That was the moment I slapped her.

I swear I didn’t even realize my hand was moving until it hit her face. And I regret it very much.

She hasn’t responded to my messages or my calls. I know she sees the texts and calls—the calls go through, and messages on WhatsApp turn blue.

Is There A Man Out There Who Doesn’t Cheat?

What can I do to change her mind and give me another chance? I still feel guilty for neglecting her feelings and all the events that happened that ended up with me slapping her. I just want my girlfriend back.

  • Amazon Echo Pop Kids $21.99 (was $49.99), below its 2026 low

Best Fire TV streaming stick deals

Every Fire TV stick is on sale, starting at $15.99. The Stick HD and 4K Select both match their lowest prices of 2026. The 4K Plus and 4K Max are the ones to pick for a newer TV and a faster Wi-Fi network, though both were cheaper during an earlier sale this year.

Best Fire tablet deals

Most of the Fire tablet prices are Prime-member deals, and three of them are below the lowest prices they hit earlier in the year. The Kids and Kids Pro editions come with a case and a year of Amazon Kids+. The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro dropped $40 more on September 30 to $64.99, open to everyone, though Amazon’s delivery estimate has slipped to mid-October.

Best eero mesh Wi-Fi deals

Amazon’s eero routers have been on sale since September 27. The eero Max 7 and eero Outdoor 7 match their lowest prices of the year. The eero Pro 7 three-pack is $200 off, but it sold for $50 less earlier in 2026.

Best Ring sensor and smart home deals

Ring’s new Sidewalk sensors don’t need a base station, and they’re discounted alongside Amazon’s Smart Thermostat, which is $1 under its 2026 low.

Amazon device deals FAQ

Will Echo devices be on sale for Prime Big Deal Days?

Yes. Echo speakers and Echo Show displays went on sale early on September 27 and are set to stay discounted through October 7. The Echo Show 11 at $149.99 is the standout, since it matches its lowest price of the year. Current prices for every Echo are in the list above.

What is the lowest price on an Amazon Echo right now?

The Echo Pop Kids at $21.99 is the cheapest Echo in the sale. For adults, the Echo Dot at $39.99 is the lowest-priced option.

Is there a deal on Ring doorbells for Prime Big Deal Days?

Yes. Every current Ring doorbell is discounted, starting with the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K at $39.99, which is $10 below its previous low for 2026. The 4K Pro models are $100 off.

Is Ring cheaper with Amazon Prime?

No. The Ring, Echo, Fire TV Stick, and eero deals in this post are open to everyone, with or without Prime. Most of the Fire tablet deals, the Ember 40-inch Fire TV, and the Blink Mini Pan-Tilt are the exceptions, since those are Prime-member prices.

When does the Amazon device sale end?

Prime Big Deal Days ends Wednesday, October 7 at 11:59pm PT, which is 2:59am ET on Thursday, October 8. The early Amazon device deals in this post are scheduled to run through that same end time.

Should I buy Amazon devices now or wait for Black Friday?

For the devices at their lowest prices of the year, like the Fire TV Stick 4K Select at $17.99 and the Blink Outdoor 4 three-pack at $65.99 (which now comes with a free wired doorbell), buying now makes sense. Amazon usually repeats its device deals for Black Friday, but these early prices are already at or below where they landed earlier in 2026. The Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, and most of the eero kits were cheaper earlier this year, so those are safer to hold off on.

If you only buy one Amazon device before the sale starts on October 6, make it the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K at $39.99. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select at $17.99 and the Blink Outdoor 4 three-pack at $65.99 are right behind it, and both match their lowest prices of 2026.

Eagles-Bears Film Review: Rough game for Vic Fangio

0

Tv

The Eagles’ defense had a rough night against the Bears. Ben Johnson had an excellent read on what Vic Fangio wanted to do, and he kept finding ways to turn the Eagles’ aggression against them. The result was a 27-7 loss in which Case Keenum completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Eagles did not sack him once.

I want to separate the run defense from everything else. The Bears ran 35 times and controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes, but they only averaged 3.7 yards per carry. I don’t think the Eagles got destroyed by the run. But I think they were terrified after last year. They got hurt because their commitment to stopping it left them vulnerable to play action, and because their pass rush and coverage could not get on the same page.

The tackling and communication concern me more than the rushing yards given up. There were still individual performances worth appreciating, and I haven’t lost faith in Fangio after three weeks. But this was bad. I’m hopeful he will work it out. At least we don’t play Ben Johnson every week. He’s becoming Fangio’s kryptonite.

Tv Defense

Ben Johnson seemed to understand exactly how the Eagles would react after last year’s game. Watch the linebackers and safeties commit to the run action, then look at the space that opens behind them. This wasn’t a case of Keenum repeatedly fitting impossible throws into tight windows. The Bears used the Eagles’ determination to stop the run to make the passing game easier. Fangio got worked over on this one. One issue with starting with a split-safety look is that defenders have to come aggressively downhill. It’s sort of part of the structure.

Last week, I wrote about the Eagles’ inability to rally to the football and tackle consistently. A BGN commenter described this defense as a little soft. I wasn’t ready to use that word then, and I still don’t want to label the whole unit after one clip. But this is a poor look. The Bears push the Eagles into the end zone, and the defense offers too little resistance when it should be fighting for every inch. Whatever scheme you are playing, good defense still requires effort, leverage, and finishing hard. That part has to improve. This defense normally excels at the fundamentals of good defense, but it hasn’t this season. It’s odd to see.

That said, let’s give the run defense some credit. This is a really good Bears rushing attack, and the Eagles made plenty of individual stops. Michael Carter II comes from depth here, reads the play, and makes an excellent tackle. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of him if the players ahead of him keep struggling. The run game was part of Johnson’s plan, but the Eagles’ run fits weren’t the main reason they lost.

How often do you see Fangio send a cornerback? The Eagles were looking for pressure because their normal rush wasn’t getting home. This call finally makes Keenum uncomfortable, but it still ends with a completely open completion. That’s the maddening part of this game, and it was frustrating to watch. Even when the front gave the secondary a chance, the coverage broke down.

The Bears repeatedly used motion and switch releases, where receivers exchange positions immediately after the snap, to test the Eagles’ communication in match coverage. Here Zack Baun and Cooper DeJean both head toward the flat and end up covering the same receiver. The middle of the field is abandoned. You can see them communicating before the snap. Match coverage is all about communication. The Eagles made so many errors this week.

I criticized the lack of fight earlier, so I should also mention the first-half goal-line stand. The Eagles made several big plays with their backs against the wall. Jalen Carter made this one without using his right hand. That is impressive, but it also shows the problem. He clearly can’t play right now, and the Eagles desperately need him to be a disruptive player again. He recorded no pressures on 33 pass-rush snaps. The Eagles are paying him a lot of money and can’t rush the quarterback. It’s a big issue.

Jonathan Greenard did flash in limited snaps, and he gets after Keenum here. The Eagles badly need him healthy and contributing as a pass rusher. But then of course, Andrew Mukuba flies downhill toward the run action, and the receiver runs straight past him. Keenum deserves credit for a terrific throw under pressure, but Johnson has caught the defense out of position again. Mukuba is moving so aggressively toward the line that recovering when the ball goes behind him becomes extremely difficult.

This in-breaking route is another play where I wanted Mukuba to arrive sooner. Fangio often asks his safeties to come across and cut off crossers, though, and without knowing his precise assignment, I won’t declare this entirely his fault. What I can say with confidence is that Keenum has far too comfortable a pocket. If the quarterback can stand there and wait for a route to develop, every uncertainty in the coverage becomes harder to survive. The Eagles had no quick pressure for long stretches of this game. Keenum played well, but I’m convinced if the Eagles had got pressure on him early and hit him a few times, they could have forced him out of rhythm. When you don’t lay a hand on the quarterback, it’s easy for them to get comfortable back there. Any quarterback in this league can win when he is kept upright and trusts what he is seeing. Keenum was never under any real pressure.

I thought Tariq Woolen had played excellent football before this week. This was a very bad game. Like, really bad. The early officiating seemed to get into his head, and he has always played near the boundary between physical and grabby, but the bigger issue was that Johnson kept making him process switch releases. Woolen’s head was spinning. The Bears went back to the same stress point because the Eagles never looked comfortable sorting it out. It was the biggest issue with the defense this week.

For the past couple of seasons, the communication in the back end has been one of the main reasons this defense has worked so well. Last week, the Eagles tried simplifying things with more spot-drop zone and still had problems. This week, they returned to match coverage and had a different set of problems. It is early, but opponents will notice. They don’t have to invent anything clever when Johnson has already put the issue on film.

And, yes, my anger about losing Reed Blankenship still annoys me. I won’t mention him again, but let me say it just once more. The Eagles found the money for two enormous defensive tackle contracts but couldn’t keep Blankenship around? I miss having a safety who knew this defense inside out and helped with communication on the back end. Watching Marcus Epps was tough this week. It feels like Howie Roseman really made a mess of the safety position this off-season. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Kenny Moore in the nickel and DeJean at safety soon.

Here we go again. The Eagles create some pressure, but Mukuba attacks downhill and cannot adjust to the danger developing behind him. Johnson understood that the Eagles wanted to erase the run and kept inviting that reaction before attacking the space it left. Rinse and repeat.

Quinyon Mitchell was outstanding. Coverage, tackling, coming downhill against the run, closing on short passes. You name it, he did it. He did everything you could ask from a top cornerback (except intercept the football). This was a proper CB1 performance, and, for me, Mitchell is the best player on the Eagles’ defense right now. When so much else looked uncertain, he looked completely sure of himself. What a young superstar.

Ty Robinson rushed the passer three times all game, but he produced the best pass-rushing rep by any defensive tackle all game. I’m not asking for him to become a full-time pass rusher overnight, but the Eagles are struggling to generate immediate interior pressure. Why not give him a few more chances to create some chaos? Something has to change in the rush plan while Carter is not himself.

This is the most glaring communication bust of the game. Another switch release, another receiver completely free, and a 41-yard touchdown. I’m not going to pretend I know whether Woolen or DeJean had the wrong assignment. Given Woolen’s struggles with these exchanges throughout the night and DeJean’s longer experience in Fangio’s system, I lean toward Woolen, but that is a guess, not a certainty. I thought DeJean was better overall this week.

This cannot become a recurring feature of Woolen at cornerback. Every opponent will see the touchdown and test the same communication rules with motion and switch releases until the Eagles and Woolen prove they can handle them. Perhaps Fangio even considers using more man coverage with this group in certain situations (he probably won’t, but I would consider it). That wouldn’t solve every problem, but it could reduce some of the exchanges that are giving the secondary trouble.

Let’s end with something good. Baun gets Luther Burden III one-on-one in the slot and handles it beautifully. There is plenty to criticize about the collective performance without turning every defender into part of the problem. Baun remains an excellent player. Jihaad Campbell has attracted plenty of attention, too, but I don’t think the defense’s struggles can simply be dumped on him. The issues in front of and behind these linebackers are bigger than one young player.

And at least the Eagles don’t have to face Johnson every week. It’s not as if another young offensive genius is waiting for them this week … sigh.

Tv Final Thoughts

The Eagles allowed 375 yards and 24 first downs, failed to sack Case Keenum once, and repeatedly lost receivers through play action and switch releases. Johnson won the schematic battle. It was a bad day at the office for this defense. They have invested some serious money in certain defenders that aren’t producing right now.

I remain hopeful because Fangio has earned our trust and because this defense still has a lot of talent. But hope needs to turn into answers quickly. The Eagles are missing players like Blankenship and Nakobe Dean right now. The team could use Dean’s pass-rushing ability right now because the front isn’t winning, and his pass rush gave this defense a way to get pressure while only rushing four. This was a bad defensive performance. I still believe they can fix it. Fangio’s defenses can take time to get going. I hope it gets going soon!

Gavi approves first-ever rapid diagnostic tests for measles

0

Nutrition

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, a public-private partnership global health organisation, has announced the approval of the first-ever measles rapid diagnostic tests to support vaccination efforts.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Gavi said the rapid measles diagnostic tests would support targeted vaccination during outbreaks and the identification of priorities for preventive vaccination efforts.

The measles diagnostic tests were funded by Gavi and manufactured by DIATROPIX, a subsidiary of Institut Pasteur de Dakar in Senegal.

Chief Vaccine Programmes and Markets Officer, An Vermeersch, said, “Improving the effectiveness of vaccinations, strengthening outbreak response and investing in local manufacturing are central tenets to the Gavi Leap and our efforts to build our work around the needs of countries.”

Mr Vermeersch added, “By investing in local manufacturing capacity, we are not only helping to protect communities now, we are also putting in place systems that are better able to help prevent outbreaks from happening again in the future.”

The breakthrough was achieved following Gavi’s partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Gates Foundation and other stakeholders to advance measles surveillance and support faster outbreak response.

These new measles diagnostics were thoroughly evaluated by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory under WHO’s Global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network to determine whether they meet the required standards.

The UK Health Security Agency also supported the development and validation of the tests.

The Gates Foundation provided about $7 million, while Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provided $1 million to support the development process.

Gavi said up to 500,000 tests are expected to be deployed annually once the programme is complete, with the first rollout starting later this year in Senegal.

The tests also form part of its $43 million investment package approved by the Gavi Board in 2025 to fund diagnostic kits across a range of diseases.

It added that, due to immunisation efforts, it had recorded a huge reduction in global cases and deaths since 2000, with these vaccines saving nearly 20 million lives in Africa.

It noted that effective strategies for measles control must be guided by timely and reliable measles surveillance data to aid in fighting outbreaks through rapid response and effective preventive efforts, leading to less morbidity and mortality.

Gavi said measles immunity gaps remain a significant concern globally, given the high transmissibility of the virus and the high risk of serious outbreaks, adding that despite the availability of safe and cost-effective vaccines, populations without adequate protection face a resurgence of outbreaks and deaths.

It added that countries with large outbreaks have almost tripled since 2021, with 59 countries experiencing large or disruptive outbreaks in 2024.

In developing countries, coverage has dropped below required levels, with more than 15.6 million children in these countries missing a first dose of measles vaccine despite progress in 2025.

These gaps indicate early signs of weaknesses in routine childhood immunisation systems.

In 2024, an estimated 95,000 measles deaths were recorded globally, including among those who had never received a single routine vaccine and under-immunised children under five.

These diagnostic tests can therefore help countries and partners identify communities with high numbers of unimmunised or under-immunised children.

Canada’s Minister of Health, Marjorie Michel, said, “This breakthrough demonstrates what can be achieved through strong international collaboration, scientific excellence and innovation. I am proud that the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory played a key role in conducting the laboratory evaluation of this new test through the WHO’s Global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network.

“This important global achievement will help countries detect measles cases sooner, particularly in communities where timely laboratory access is limited. Faster detection means quicker outbreak responses, stronger surveillance and, ultimately, better protection for children and communities from this preventable disease.”

Kate O’Brien, Director of the Department of Immunisation, Vaccines and Biologicals at WHO, said, “The first-ever measles rapid diagnostic test is a major achievement for outbreak detection and response. By enabling fast, affordable case confirmation closer to where people live, the test has the potential to transform measles surveillance, especially in remote, fragile and emergency settings where laboratory access is limited, and accelerate efforts towards measles elimination.”

Greg Widmyer, Director, Immunisation, Gates Foundation, said, “Measles remains one of the clearest warning signs of gaps in routine immunization. This rapid test gives countries a faster, more affordable way to identify measles cases, respond to outbreaks, and target vaccination where it’s needed most. We’re proud to have supported its development with partners in Senegal and the UK, and we look forward to seeing country partners bring it to the communities that need it.”

UNICEF’s Global Chief of Immunisation, Ephrem Lemango, said, “Every measles case is a warning that children and communities are being missed by routine immunization. UNICEF will work with governments and partners to strengthen national immunization systems, so they are more responsive and adaptive, integrating rapid diagnostic tests to identify gaps earlier and reach missed children faster.”

Man City guilty of almost all the 115 financial charges, Premier League says in explosive verdict

0

Football

MANCHESTER, England (AP):

Manchester City artificially inflated its revenue by more than US$1 billion over nearly a decade, circumventing fair-play rules that restricted rival clubs and allowing it to pad its roster with some of football’s biggest stars, an investigatory panel found in a bombshell report published yesterday.

In what is widely viewed as the biggest scandal in Premier League history, the independent panel determined that the United Arab Emirates-backed team committed almost all of the 115-plus violations it was accused of during a period in which City changed the landscape of the world’s most popular football league. That included 80 from 2009-18 for alleged financial misdeeds and another 35 from 2018-23 for allegedly not cooperating with the investigation.

City’s alleged financial wrongdoing — made possible in part through what the league said were “sham” commercial deals — was worth more than £900 million (US$1.19 billion). Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said the ruling showed that City “systematically broke Premier League rules for nearly a decade.”

“This disciplinary case, and this decision, are the most significant in Premier League history,” Masters said.

City now face severe sanctions that could include a huge points deduction or even expulsion from the league, causing heavy reputational damage to its Abu Dhabi ownership.

The Premier League said sanctions will be decided during a separate hearing held by the independent commission at an unspecified date.

CLUB PLANS TO APPEAL

City has always denied wrongdoing and said in a statement that it was “disappointed and surprised” by the ruling. It plans to appeal the verdict and said it would be “relentless” in its fight to clear its name, which would further drag out a case that has already run for more than three years.

Any appeal by City would have to be made by Friday, the league said.

In an internal video to City staff — obtained by broadcaster Sky News — the club’s CEO, Ferran Soriano, went into detail about why he felt the verdict was wrong.

“This has gone on for so long that it is important to remind ourselves that the whole Premier League case against us is based on a single false accusation: that the owner’s personal money was somehow and secretly put into the club via some sponsors from Abu Dhabi,” he said. “This is just not true. Irrefutable evidence has been provided to the Premier League commission that shows it could not happen and that it did not happen.”

DRAWN OUT INVESTIGATION

The allegations first arose in 2018 from leaked club emails and documents, and the Premier League initiated its case more than three years ago. Yesterday’s findings come after it emerged last week that the accusations against City were expected to be upheld following an exhaustive process.

City is accused of providing misleading information about its finances over a nine-year period from 2009-18 — a span in which it emerged from the shadow of its crosstown rival, Manchester United, won three titles and signed some of the world’s best players, including Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne.

The violations included failing to provide accurate financial information and submitting inflated figures for sponsorship deals out of Abu Dhabi, hiding payments and breaching financial rules established by the Premier League and UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, intended to keep clubs financially stable by not spending beyond their means.

On top of that, City faced many other charges of failing to cooperate with the investigation between 2018-23.

“An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-season period,” the league said, “and the majority of charges in relation to its failure to co-operate with the league’s investigation.”

Regarding the sponsorship deals, the league said: “Manchester City arranged ‘sham’ contracts (which misrepresented the true agreement between the parties) with a number of its commercial partners, as well as relying on ‘sham’ agreements with others, to artificially inflate the club’s revenues and reduce its costs.

“The club,” the league added, “filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances from its auditors and football regulators.”

Business leaders must think like sustainability professionals, whatever their title

0

Recipes

The opinions expressed here by Trellis expert contributors are their own, not those of Trellis.

My students at NYU Stern showed self-restraint in waiting until the second day of class to ask me: “What’s the prognosis for the corporate sustainability profession?”

At the Center for Sustainable Business, conversations with our broad network of alumni and practitioners at global companies and investors point to a clear theme: The profession is changing fast. Artificial intelligence is absorbing reporting work, and political backlash has led many companies to call the work of reducing greenhouse emissions or mitigating environmental impacts something else.

I told my students that job titles are changing, but the systems thinking that underpins sustainability can be their competitive edge in any role. Here are three core skills that make that possible — and they are just as applicable for today’s leaders as tomorrow’s.

Recipes Making the financial case

Financial acumen and corporate strategy are no longer optional. Sustainability investments must compete for capital like other investments. But calculating the return on a sustainability initiative is rarely as straightforward as the process for other investments.

The value may land in someone else’s P&L, be hard to count — like employee or customer retention or brand reputation — or take longer to pay back. Sustainability professionals need to understand how money moves through their company and what the organization’s strategy prioritizes, so they can show where the return accrues and how it arrives.

An executive at a global investment firm recently told me, “I see a shake-up underway. Sustainability leaders that came from comms, PR or HR are on their way out; people with financial backgrounds are on their way in.”

Critics say that having to make the business case proves sustainability was never more than good management. I’d respond that translating external impacts and risks into business decisions was always the point. Inside a company, that’s what drives transformation and capital allocation.

When Owens Corning asked the Center for Sustainable Business to model its goal of sending zero waste to landfill from its fiberglass insulation business, the analysis found that diverting waste was not in and of itself a value driver, because landfill space can be relatively cheap in the U.S. right now.

The value showed up elsewhere: in buying less virgin glass and less outside recycled glass, in cutting emissions now instead of buying offsets later, and in fewer injuries and lower turnover. For one Midwest plant we modeled, the estimated seven-year net present value was equal to about 15 percent of the facility’s annual revenue.

Recipes Tracing policy into opportunity

A new policy or rule change is a headline first and a set of business decisions second. When the 2025 budget law shortened the life of wind and solar tax credits, the headline was that the incentives were ending. Developers who anticipated and planned ahead saw opportunity: they were able to accelerate investments in order to beat the pending deadline. Researcher Wood Mackenzie estimates enough utility-scale solar was safe-harbored to cover forecast installations through the end of the decade.

Policy set the deadline, but financial analysis told them what it was worth to beat it.

Packaging is the topic unfolding in real time. Seven states have passed extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws, and the European Union’s packaging regulation began applying in August, but fee schedules are still moving and lawsuits are pending.

Sonoco tells investors that in Europe and Asia, EPR fees are pushing customers toward its paper and metal packaging, and that it will invest where “regulation and customer programs line up.” The skill is understanding what a policy shift means for your company’s operations and market position in time to adjust.

Recipes Outside-in thinking

Every company depends on things it does not own and rarely measures: the water its plants draw, the weather its supply chains encounter, the energy and grid capacity it needs, the raw materials it buys, the communities that permit or block its projects, and the rules that shape trade and costs, from tariffs to carbon pricing.

Business continuity demands that every company think deeply about its license to operate. As just one example, Data Center Watch estimated that roughly $130 billion of data center projects were blocked or delayed in the first quarter of 2026 because of community concerns — about as much as for all of 2025.

Google is responding in real time. In 2020, a small team at the company built software to shift computing workloads toward hours when cleaner power was available. Now, that capability is the foundation for important demand response clauses in Google’s energy relationships: The company built 1 gigawatt of demand response into its utility contracts. This helps Google onnect new data centers more rapidly, because utilities have less peak demand to cover and may be able to defer capacity built only for the highest peak hours.

Sustainability professionals should make it their mission to foresee external forces that could move results, in either direction, and turn them into a number someone can act on.

The energy transition and other sustainability priorities need enormous amounts of capital, and most of it already comes from the private sector. Domestic private actors account for 60 percent of mitigation finance and have driven about 70 percent of its net growth since 2019. Private capital is allocated by its own logic: what an investment returns, what it risks, and when it pays back. Public funding alone won’t get us to the estimated $6 trillion-plus needed in climate finance, and private financing has to compete for capital. Anyone who wants to unlock that capital needs to realize they have to make the case in these terms.

Recipes Bottom line

The job title might have changed; the challenges haven’t gone anywhere. Climate change, water access and human rights still shape what companies can make, where they can operate and what they can sell. Someone must translate those conditions for business strategists: making the financial case, translating policy into business opportunity and reading outside-in signals before they show up in the P&L.

Those are the business skills required for the future, grounded in sustainability and systems thinking. My students will hold titles I can’t predict. If they can do these three things, they’ll have an edge in every one of those roles.

Emissions accounting (GHG Protocol)

Actions and Market Instruments
Status: A first public consultation of one potential component — consequential accounting for electricity — ended Jan. 31, and a white paper covers what to expect.
Key dates: As of July, the workstream timeline is aligned with GHG Protocol’s Scope 2 rules changes for electricity; the public consultation draft for the Actions and Market Instruments standard is anticipated in Q2 2027.
What: GHG Protocol is proposing new rules for accounting for the benefits of climate actions that go beyond companies’ direct operations. Investments in supply chains and other areas, sometimes known as insets or value-chain interventions, are not covered by existing reporting frameworks.
Updated 8/24/26

Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard
Status: An overhaul is under review by the organization’s independent standards board. It’s now being aligned with the ISO 14064 series, which has changed the schedule.
Key dates: First draft was due for public consultation in Q2; it was postponed in favor of public consultation draft for the unified standard, due in Q2 2027.
What: The Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, first published by the GHG Protocol in 2001, is one of the first methodologies developed to help companies create comprehensive greenhouse gas inventories; the suite of standards includes amendments for Scope 2 (related to electricity) and Scope 3 (value chain emissions).
Updated 7/29/26

Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard
Status: Draft for public consultation is due in the second half of 2026, but that may change because of the ISO unification work
Key dates: The working group took up its final topic of discussion — how to manage circularity — in April.
What: The standard, first released in 2011, measures emissions from 15 categories of upstream and downstream activities outside a company’s direct control, such as purchased goods and services. The revision may change those groupings. It’s expected to offer guidance for how to report on sustainable aviation fuel as well as other contracts that companies use to avoid emissions.
Updated 7/29/26

Land Sector and Removals Standard
Status: Published Feb. 2 and due to take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
Key dates: Practical details for how to approach the standard were published June 30 in a guidance document.
What: Land Sector and Removals Standard, a new GHG Protocol methodology for reporting on nature-based and engineered carbon removal projects, was five years in the making. It offers comprehensive guidance for calculating emissions generation and removal and accommodates the use of “mass balance,” which lets companies mix low-carbon and conventional crops.
Updated 7/2/26

Scope 2 Guidance
Status: The GHG Protocol closed a consultation on a major and controversial revision of its rules for reporting renewable energy contracts and transactions on Jan. 31.

What consumers think about recycling labels

0

Food

The opinions expressed by Trellis expert contributors are their own, not those of Trellis.

For the first time in close to 15 years, the regulatory bar for recyclability labeling is set to rise.

On Oct. 4, California’s “Truth in Labeling” legislation, formally known as SB 343, will come into effect. The law raises the bar for what can be called recyclable in the state, requiring products with the label to be collected in 60 percent of communities and sorted in 60 percent of facilities.

The rules have not advanced without debate. Legislators and advocacy groups say that the new regulations will improve recycling. On the other side, some packaging trade groups sued to pause the law, saying it restricts free speech.

This creates uncertainty for companies, with the law due to come into effect even as enforcement remains unresolved. As businesses consider how to proceed, it’s worth remembering that the debate was between industry and advocacy groups — not consumers. Indeed, after surveying 1,000 U.S. consumers about North America’s most recognizable recyclability labels, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC), the organization I work for, found that compliance and consumer-friendly recyclability instructions can go hand in hand.

Brands looking to navigate the new legislative landscape don’t need to shy away from compliant on-pack instructions. Instead, they can take three steps to advance labeling strategies that clear California’s regulatory hurdles and give consumers the instructions they want.

Food Address the persistent barriers

SPC’s research found that consumers largely participate in recycling, even if they don’t always trust that recycling works.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans claim to recycle often or always. For the third who may not always recycle, the largest barriers won’t surprise sustainability professionals. First, people don’t recycle when they don’t have access to recycling programs. Second, and perhaps the easier problem to solve, they don’t recycle when they don’t know what to recycle. This is where labels can help.

Food Design for compliance and consumers

More than half of consumers say they rely on their best judgment when disposing of their packaging. In other words, they’re not habitually looking to nearly ubiquitous on-pack instructions for guidance.

Despite this, our survey found that consumers want more guidance from companies. Companies can help with labeling that captures their attention and breaks their habits.

To recycle correctly, consumers say that clearer, more visible instructions would make them pay more attention. Specifically, they want communications that go beyond symbols and include simple text.

The good news for sustainability professionals is that How2Recycle labels, a program managed by GreenBlue, the SPC’s parent nonprofit, do three things. One, they address all the points raised above by consumers. Two, they align with emerging compliance, including SB 343, because they reserve “Widely Recyclable” text and the chasing arrows design for packaging that hits the 60 percent access threshold, among other criteria. And three, they give companies a strong foundation for capturing consumers’ attention: 84 percent of consumers already recognize at least one label in the program’s suite, our survey found.

Food Help consumers recycle other materials

How2Recycle has other labels designed with California’s regulations in mind:

  • “Check Locally” labels are used for packaging that’s accepted in at least 20 percent of communities.
  • “Store Drop-off” labels are used for films and flexibles.

Both of these labels saw high consumer comprehension in our survey, but low understanding of how to check locally or which stores to bring packaging to. Put simply, consumers can get lost when label instructions get more nuanced than “Widely Recyclable.” Brands can help close this gap by investing in educational resources or campaigns that support consumers looking to find film collection sites, for example.

Food A path forward

Regulations — and regulatory uncertainty — aren’t stopping anytime soon. Yet whatever happens in California, consumers’ needs are clear: they want disposal instructions they can recognize, understand and act on. Thankfully, consumer-friendly labels and compliance aren’t mutually exclusive. The brands that get labeling right will work to substantiate their claims and make those claims useful to the people standing at the bin.

NFL Power Rankings: Week 4 Edition

0

Workouts

Now that Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season is in the books, it’s time for an incredibly meaningful and serious exercise: NFL Power Rankings! What differentiates these rankings from all others is that they’re THE only truly accurate ones in the entire universe. Hard to believe, I know. But it’s true. Let’s take a look at how all 32 teams stack up.

Workouts BLG’S WEEK 4 NFL POWER RANKINGS

1 – Kansas City Chiefs (Last Week: 2) – The Chiefs took care of business by comfortably defeating the worst team in the NFL.

2 – Buffalo Bills (LW: 3) – Josh Allen turned the ball over three times after having zero giveaways in the Bills’ first two games. But he also had two touchdowns to give him a league-leading 11 total on the season as the Bills are off to a 3-0 start.

3 – San Francisco 49ers (LW: 4) – Brock Purdy currently has the second-shortest NFL MVP odds. The Niners are rolling early on.

4 – Seattle Seahawks (LW: 1) – Strange to see this staunch Seahawks defense get carved up by Marcus Mariota. Seattle ran into a more desperate team in Week 3. They’ll probably bounce back and be fine.

5 – Baltimore Ravens (LW: 6) – The Ravens took advantage of the Cowboys’ incompetence to steal a win in regulation. This offense, which ranks fourth in points scored, has looked pretty good in two of their three games thus far. Seems like hiring Ben Johnson assistant Declan Doyle was a good call.

6 – Minnesota Vikings (LW: 9) – Brian Flores is a huge reason why the Vikings are undefeated through three games. Minny’s defense has allowed the second-fewest points in the NFL.

7 – Chicago Bears (LW: 10) – Despite being down to third-string quarterback Case Keenum, the Bears bullied the Eagles on Monday night. Chicago clearly outcoached Nick Sirianni and his staff in that game.

8 – Los Angeles Rams (LW: 5) – Now is not the time to declare the Rams dead. Week 1 was a weird situation and they were done dirty by a bad call late in Week 3. They haven’t hit the ground running but they’re still going to be good. They outgained Denver by 225 yards in a loss on Sunday.

9 – Detroit Lions (LW: 14) – The Lions’ offense is often going to give them a chance to win. Their defense continues to be a major concern, however.

10 – Cincinnati Bengals (LW: 8) – The Bengals’ defense was looking to be improved … and then they gave up nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns to 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers.

11 – Philadelphia Eagles (LW: 7) – Maybe the Eagles just aren’t very good. With all the winning they’ve done in recent years, they certainly deserve some benefit of the doubt. It’s possible they’ll turn things around. So far, though, they just haven’t been a very good football team.

12 – Dallas Cowboys (LW: 12) – The Cowboys snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Their defense still looks bad.

13 – Denver Broncos (LW: 16) – It wasn’t pretty but the Broncos picked up a big win against a tough opponent to stay in competition for the top spot in a very competitive AFC West.

14 – Jacksonville Jaguars (LW: 17) – The Jags have the second-best point differential in the NFL. They’re only two points behind the 49ers in the top spot.

15 – Las Vegas Raiders (LW: 18) – The Raiders are fun! Will be very interesting to see how they fare against the Chiefs in a matchup of two 3-0 teams.

16 – New Orleans Saints (LW: 15) – The Saints were outdone by the Raiders in a battle of two teams that seem to be on the rise.

17 – New England Patriots (LW: 11) – Woof. Drake Maye has seven times as many giveaways as he does touchdown passes this season. Less than ideal.

18 – Pittsburgh Steelers (LW: 21) – The Stillers are inevitably competent.

19 – New York Giants (LW: 20) – It’s hard to see the Giants winning a lot of games with Jameis Winston struggling. But credit to them for not totally folding after Jaxson Dart’s injury.

20 – Indianapolis Colts (LW: 24) – The Colts are on the board after a much-needed win to avoid starting 0-3. Still alive.

21 – Washington Commanders (LW: 26) – Marcus Mariota> Jayden Daniels?

22 – Houston Texans (LW: 13) – The Texans are 0-3 and they have the Cowboys up next. Could very well be 0-4.

23 – Green Bay Packers (LW: 19) – The Packers are in desperate need of offensive line help, as evidenced by their flurry of roster moves up front. Not a great spot to be in.

24 – Carolina Panthers (LW: 22) – Losing to the Browns isn’t very serious behavior.

25 – Atlanta Falcons (LW: 31) – Well, Michael Penix Jr. gives the Falcons more of a chance to win than Cooper Rush does. They’ve gone from one of the very worst teams to merely bad instead.

26 – Cleveland Browns (LW: 30) – If the Browns are tanking, they’re not exactly doing it right.

27 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (LW: 23) – Disaster start to the season for the Bucs. Interested to see if Jalon Daniels gives them a spark?

28 – New York Jets (LW: 28) – The Jets have lost their last two but they were both one-score games. Not looking totally incompetent.

29 – Arizona Cardinals (LW: 27) – It’s not in the Cards for this team this year. Arizona has the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL.

30 – Los Angeles Chargers (LW: 25) – Only two teams have a worse point differential than the Chargers this year. More losing is probably on the way with the Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, and Rams up next. It’s simply never gonna happen for this team.

31 – Tennessee Titans (LW: 29) – Cam Ward couldn’t build on some of the promise he showed in Week 2. Very bad interception to end the Titans’ chances in North Jersey.

32 – Miami Dolphins (LW: 32) – No team looks like they want the No. 1 overall pick the 2027 NFL Draft more.

‘Economics is not a crystal ball’: PM Wong urges economists to stay grounded as AI advances, Singapore News

0

Exercise

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has urged Singapore’s economists to exercise sound judgment and recognise the limits of increasingly sophisticated analytical tools, including artificial intelligence.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Economist Service (ES) on Wednesday (Sept 30), PM Wong said economists should not become overly reliant on forecasting models or technical tools when advising on policy.

“Economics is not a crystal ball,” he said, noting that economic models are simplifications of reality and cannot fully account for shocks, technological advances and changes in how people and businesses behave.

PM Wong also warned economists against being “captive to an ideology” or to technical methods, saying analysis should be used to test ideas rather than simply support pre-determined conclusions.

“The most enduring value of economics lies not in any particular theory, model or technique. It lies in a way of thinking,” said PM Wong.

Rather, he said economists should remain guided by three enduring principles: that prices, costs and incentives matter.

“These basic principles of economic thinking have stood the test of time. They help us think more clearly about our choices – the trade-offs involved, the incentives we create, and the consequences that follow,” said PM Wong.

Exercise Economist Service to build new capabilities

The event, which was held at Parkroyal Collection Pickering, also featured reflections from economists on how economic analysis is used to inform policy and respond to emerging challenges.

Speaking to AsiaOne on Wednesday, Dr Tan Di Song, senior lead economist at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, said economists play an important role in helping the Government identify emerging risks and make evidence-based policy decisions.

“When applying economic models and frameworks to policymaking, we always must ask, ‘What are we missing?’ and ‘How can we account for these other complications?'” said Dr Tan.

He also stressed that economists need to balance technical rigour with clear communication, so their findings can be easily understood and applied by policymakers.

Speaking at the event, chief economist Yong Yik Wei said the ES would deepen its capabilities in response to emerging policy challenges.

“To meet these needs, the ES will deepen our capabilities in market design and regulatory economics and structural economic modelling,” said Yong.

“This entails setting up units within MTI as centres of expertise to work with agencies and systematically develop a pool of ES officers with the relevant expertise.”

The ES is also studying how big data and AI can be used responsibly and effectively in economic surveillance and research, while strengthening its links with universities and international organisations, Yong said.

Exercise Preparing for greater uncertainty

PM Wong said the principles of economic thinking will become increasingly important as Singapore faces greater global uncertainty and disruption from AI and technological change.

“Singapore has never taken a laissez-faire approach. The Government intervenes actively in many areas,” he said, adding that intervention must be carefully designed, with policymakers assessing incentives, costs, trade-offs and possible second- and third-order effects.

These considerations will become increasingly important as Singapore faces greater global uncertainty and disruption from AI and technological change, PM Wong said.

While economic restructuring can drive innovation and growth, workers whose jobs are displaced may face immediate and personal costs.

The Government must therefore help those affected by change and ensure the benefits of growth are broadly shared, while remaining mindful of the unintended consequences of policy interventions, he said.

He encouraged economists to make full use of new capabilities such as AI, high-frequency data and advanced empirical techniques, while recognising that “better tools” do not necessarily lead to “better judgment”.

“What matters is not how large the service becomes,” PM Wong said in closing. “It is the quality of thinking you bring to Government, and the difference you make to Singapore.”

USMNT youth revolution forges ahead in record fashion | MLSSoccer.com

Another potent injection of youth, another goalfest, another win – this time garnished with an extra dash of grit.

A youthful US men’s national team checked several more boxes as they banked their second victory of the autumn international window Tuesday night, rallying from 2-1 down to beat Chile 4-2 at St. Louis CITY SC’s Energizer Park, paced yet again by two goals from MLS-developed teenagers and solid work from an ensemble cast of fresh faces.

Red Bull New York homegrown Julian Hall struck for the second time in as many games, surpassing FC Dallas product Ricardo Pepi as the youngest player in USMNT history to score in both of his first two caps, while a late clincher arrived from the foot of LA Galaxy academy alum Mathis Albert, now a prized prospect at Borussia Dortmund who became the youngest goalscorer in program history.

“The education, in the way that they came from the clubs, I think is a big credit to the clubs, the coaches, coaches from the academy, coaches on the first team,” said head coach Mauricio Pochettino, praising not only his cadre of kids but the developmental system that prepared them for occasions like this. “They’re teenagers, but they are mature enough to compete in the way that they were competing.

“The federation, us, all the staff, everyone believes in the talent of these players, and that is so important,” Pochettino added. “We need to congratulate everyone; I congratulate the MLS teams and organization, but also I congratulate the federation, because it’s providing a very good platform for them to perform.”

MLS foundation

It helped that the young’uns were shown the way by a man-of-the-match outing from Sebastian Berhalter.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps Best XI midfielder notched a goal and an assist for the second straight match, driving his team onward for 83 minutes in a confident engine-room display that underlined enormous progress since his first call-up less than a year and a half ago.

“To have a player like him is priceless,” marveled Pochettino.

After coming off the bench to clinch Saturday’s 4-1 win over Peru, Hall got the start in St. Louis, one of six players handed their first career start by Pochettino, all of them MLS-based: Hall, Chris Brady, Adri Mehmeti, Neil Pierre, Brooklyn Raines and Frankie Westfield.

This new-look XI labored for key stretches of the first half, struggling to solve Chile’s tigerish press. Several Yank mistakes led directly to big chances, the South American side ringing shots off the woodwork. Yet Hall calmed his side’s fraying nerves with two moments of quality – the first, a clever dummy of Sergiño Dest’s centering pass which created space for Berhalter to fire home the opener, the second his nimble leaping header to glance the Yanks’ second past Chilean ‘keeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

“It’s been amazing to share the field with some amazing players, and they put me in the right spots,” Hall said on the TNT postgame show, “and I’m just doing as much as I can to put them away.

“As everyone knows, we have a lot of new young guys here, making their debuts, and everyone’s out there playing like this is their 100th cap, almost. So it’s been awesome to share the field with those guys.”

International intensity

As if to complete a checklist of useful experiences ahead of their looming border-rival showdowns with Mexico and Canada, these young Yanks ended the game with a sustained confrontation that nearly sparked into a brawl at the final whistle.

The kerfuffle began when Leandro Hernández petulantly poked at the ball after US and Nashville SC goalkeeper Brian Schwake had collected it in the dying minutes. While there was minimal contact, it provoked an instant collective reaction from the hosts, who flocked to Schwake’s defense.

“Obviously they’re frustrated they’re losing the game – deservingly,” veteran center back Chris Richards, who delivered the game-winner with a bullet header of a Berhalter corner kick, later explained. “But then if they foul our goalie and kick him once on the ground, you’re on our home soil, so that’s not going to fly.

“Regardless of who comes in, I think the first thing we have to buy into is family, and I think you’ve seen that.”

In the end, a dose of bad blood actually lifted the USMNT’s already-positive vibes that much further as Pochettino’s refreshment of the player pool picks up pace.

“That is amazing,” the manager said of his squad’s fierce commitment to one another. “That is amazing because that shows that you care for your teammates, and then we are defending our shirt.

“That shows that we are doing good things, and we have a very good group of players that want to be successful, and they only need time, time together, and keep working, keep working. For sure, the talent is there. Now it’s up to us how we manage that talent.”

Their next test is traditionally the biggest one on offer in North America: A tangle with Mexico in Arizona this Saturday, where a strongly pro-El Tri crowd is expected.
