Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Results, Stats, and Recap

Sports analysis

NEW YORK (AP) One year after rallying past the Boston Red Sox to win an AL Wild Card Series, the New York Yankees battered Boston.

Max Fried dominated the Red Sox in the playoffs for the second straight year, Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr. homered, and the Yankees rolled to a 9-2 win Wednesday night that completed a two-game sweep.

“We enjoyed tonight. We got a lot more work to do,” Bellinger said.

New York will face AL East champion Tampa Bay in an AL Division Series starting Saturday.

“The fans were electric from the first pitch and the boys were hungry. We got a young, hungry team here,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said as teammates sprayed him with bubbly during the clubhouse celebration. “This makes me feel young every single time.”

Judge missed this series because of a calf injury and isn’t sure whether he will play against the Rays, who beat New York 7-6 in the season series.

“Saturday’s a long ways away,” he said.

Clinging to a 2-1 lead after Willson Contreras homered to end Boston’s 26-inning postseason scoreless streak, the Yankees broke open the game with a six-run sixth after Spencer Jones reached on a wild pitch while striking out leading off – with the help of a video review.

García, acquired at the trade deadline, had three hits in his first postseason start, and Bellinger had four RBIs that included a three-run homer capping the sixth-inning burst that put New York ahead 8-1.

“Step one,” said Bellinger, who caught the ceremonial first pitch from his dad, Clay, a 2000 Yankees World Series champion. “Now we got to go into Tampa and play against a tough team.”

Boston, which reached the playoffs after rebounding from a 32-46 start, lost last year’s wild-card matchup after defeating the Yankees in the opener.

“Regardless of all the special things that happened this summer, and there was quite a few, the goal is to win the World Series and that ended for us tonight, so it’s frustrating,” Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said. “There’s a lot of things you can say, but in the moment right now, I think the guys only care that we lost. And it’s going to take some time to get over that.”

Boston, which also got a seventh-inning homer from Nick Sogard off Will Warren, was missing leadoff hitter Roman Anthony because of a hand injury. The Red Sox were held to a .117 average in the series (7 for 60) with 18 strikeouts and outscored 18-2.

Every starter had a hit for New York, which batted .382 in the series. Boston’s bullpen had a 20.25 ERA.

“We played great baseball in a lot of ways here, obviously anchored by our two great starters,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Yankees batters hit .450 (9 for 20) with runners in scoring position after finishing 19th among the 30 teams with a .246 RISP during the regular season.

“I feel like it’s a whole new level from regular season to these last two days,” Austin Wells said.

A day after Cam Schlittler led New York to a 9-0 win, Fried pitched three-hit ball over six innings to win a postseason game for the first time since the 2021 World Series clincher with Atlanta.

New York started eight left-handed hitters against Sonny Gray, back on the mound where his career derailed during a dismal Yankees stretch in 2017 and ’18.

García’s fourth-inning homer put the Yankees ahead and Bellinger, one of the top lefty-on-lefty hitters in the major leagues, added a fifth-inning RBI single against left-handed Erik Miller, who had just relieved.

Gray was disappointed he wasn’t allowed to face Bellinger.

“I think I’m the best pitcher in the American League going through the order a third time. I think that’s a fact,” Gray said. “I would’ve liked to live or die with me in that moment, but that’s the competitor I am. And, yeah, I think you can probably ask the guys and they felt the same way. So I felt strong. I felt confident. I felt convicted.”

Jones struck out both to start and end the bottom of the sixth, a weird half-inning that included a wild pitch, throwing error, stolen base, bunt single and intentional walk to Ben Rice that preceded Bellinger’s homer.

“I can’t believe they were willing to face a guy like Belli with men on base there,” Rice said.

Garrett Crochet, who beat the Yankees in last year’s Wild Card Series opener, hadn’t pitched since April 25 because of left shoulder inflammation when he bounced a sweeper off Adley Rutschman’s chest. The catcher picked up the ball and threw to first, where umpire John Libka signaled that Jones was out. The Yankees appealed and the call was reversed by the video umpire at the commissioner’s office.

“I couldn’t believe he was there,” Boone said. “I saw the ball squirt away a little bit. I didn’t think that much of it, and looked up and I was, like, ‘Oh, he’s safe.”’

Jones swiped second and kept going to third when Rutschman’s throw skipped into center. Rookie George Lombard Jr. singled for his first postseason RBI, Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled and Trent Grisham loaded the bases with a bunt single.

Wells’ sacrifice fly against Garrett Whitlock increased the lead to 4-1, Ryan McMahon hit an RBI groundout and Rice, who had four hits and six RBIs in the opener, was intentionally walked. Bellinger reached down and pulled a changeup into the right-center field seats.

Fried struck out six and walked one. He has allowed one run over 12 1/3 innings in the two Wild Card Series against the Red Sox.

“Definitely wasn’t sharp from the get-go but just wanted to challenge them, not try to give any free passes, especially in the first inning,” Fried said.

After a night of celebration and a day off, the Yankees will head to Florida on Friday.

“There’s just so much more to do,” Bellinger said after the big night with his father on hand. “So obviously enjoy the moment, understand how cool it is, but keep on going.”

New York RHP Gerrit Cole (10-9, 3.61), who would have started a third game against Boston, is likely to start Game 1 against the Rays.

Yankees eliminate Red Sox, Padres advance past Cubs as 2026 Wild Card Day Two wraps up

Padres best Cubs 4-1, advance to face Brewers in NLDS

The Padres won Game 2 of their Wild Card series against the Cubs pretty much just how they drew it up; 3 1/3 decent innings from starter Nick Pivetta, followed by 5 2/3 scoreless frames from the bullpen. The lineup managed two runs in the second and two more in the fourth, which was sufficient for a 4-1 victory that propelled the Padres into the NLDS, where they will face the Brewers.

The outcome means there will be just one decisive Game 3 between the Phillies and Braves at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock on Thursday.

Completely shut down in the Padres’ 2-0 series rout were likely NL MVP Pete Crow-Armstrong and the resurgent Alex Bregman, who, along with PCA, was one of the NL’s top three players in the second half before suffering fractures in his cheek after getting hit by a foul ball in the on-deck circle during the final week of the season. Those two combined to go 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts in the two games, with Crow-Armstrong reaching once in Game 1 on a walk.

Gavin Sheets delivered the biggest blow for the Padres on Wednesday, coming off the bench to crush a 100.8-mph Daniel Palencia fastball for a two-run homer in the fourth. The Padres initially started Austin Hays over Sheets at DH, largely because Hays was 7-for-14 with two homers against Kevin Gausman. However, after Gausman was pulled, the Padres made the switch. Hays, for what it’s worth, had a weak groundout in his one at-bat versus Gausman.

The win means the Padres will face the Brewers in an NLDS series beginning Saturday evening. It’ll be the first postseason matchup between the franchises, which both joined the league in 1969. Of course, the Brewers were an AL team for the first 29 of their 48 seasons.

For the Cubs, it’s a very disappointing end for a team that’s looking at a potentially turbulent winter. Outfielders Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ and starting pitchers Matthew Boyd, Gausman, Clay Holmes, Shota Imanaga and David Peterson are all set to become free agents. They will have Justin Steele back from Tommy John surgery, but it’s going to be awfully expensive to put together a quality rotation around him.

Gavin Sheets gives Padres 4-1 lead with both starters out of game

With starters Nick Pivetta and Kevin Gausman having already departed after getting 10 outs apiece, the Padres upped their lead on the Cubs to 4-1 in the fourth in a 394-foot homer from Gavin Sheets.

One of the two runs on Sheets’ homer was charged to Gausman, who gave up a Xander Bogaerts double with one out in the fourth before being replaced by Daniel Palencia. It was Palencia, the former closer for the Cubs, who surrendered the homer.

Pivetta allowed his first run on a Seiya Suzuki single, an Ian Happ walk and Nico Hoerner single with one out in the fourth, leading to his exit. Bradgley Rodríguez stepped in and struck out Matt Shaw, hit a batter and got Dansby Swanson to fly out to strand the bases loaded.

Yankees send Red Sox home for second straight season

After dispatching the Red Sox in three games last season, the Yankees were more emphatic in handling their business this year. After a huge sixth inning broke the game open tonight, the Yankees pulled out a 9-2 win, outscoring the Red Sox 18-2 in the series.

FINAL: Yankees 9, Red Sox 2

New York sweeps Boston in dominant fashion and heads to the division series against top-seeded Tampa Bay. Every starter registered a hit. Cody Bellinger socked a three-run home run. The Yankees did just about everything well. The Red Sox … did not.

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 1, 2026

The Yankees also outhit the Red Sox 26-7, and their bullpen allowed just one earned run, while the Red Sox bullpen allowed 15.

The Yankees will now move on to face the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday at Tropicana Field, while the Red Sox will make yet another plan to try and find more offense and figure out a way to win a postseason series again.

Padres get to Kevin Gausman, take 2-0 lead in second inning

Ty France, Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts all collected hits off Kevin Gausman in the second inning as the Padres took a 2-0 lead on the Cubs in Game 2.

Bogaerts drove in the first run for the Padres, with Ethan Salas delivering a sac fly to score the second. The rally caused the Cubs to get Daniel Palencia up and throwing in the pen, but Gausman was able to finish the inning without further damage.

Nick Pivetta has opened up with two scoreless frames for San Diego.

Garrett Crochet’s inning turns into disaster; Yankees take 8-1 lead

Even though not much of it was his own doing, Garrett Crochet‘s return to game action after a five-month absence due to a shoulder injury was a major bust, as the Yankees scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cody Bellinger punctuated the inning with a three-run homer, though that was after Crochet had departed.

Crochet’s four-batter return produced no outs. The first batter reached against him on a strikeout/wild pitch that was originally called an out but correctly overturned. Two singles followed, scoring the first run. Trent Grisham then went to bunt two runners over, but Caleb Durbin, seemingly not realizing how slow Grisham was running in his first start back from the IL, tried to get too fancy on his exchange and botched the throw to first, resulting in no outs on the play.

Crochet was pulled in favor of Garrett Whitlock afterwards, but Boston’s fortunes did not change. Whitlock walked one and gave up two hits, including the homer that made it 8-1.

Willson Contreras gives Red Sox their first run of the playoffs

After the Red Sox were gifted an opportunity to stay in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card series by a highly questionable send from the Yankees’ third base coach, Willson Contreras put the Red Sox on the board with a home run to right-center field.

It was the team’s first run of the postseason and put the Red Sox within one run heading into the bottom of the 6th.

Yankees tack on another run in the fifth inning

It’s deja vu in the Bronx. After Red Sox manager Chad Tracy pulled Payton Tolle in Game 1 after 4.2 innings and went to Erik Miller out of the pen, the Red Sox manager decided to pull Sonny Gray at 4.2 innings with runners on the corners. On Tuesday, Ben Rice crushed a solo home run off Miller. On Wednesday, Cody Bellinger laced a single off of Miller to score a run. The damage could have been worse too, but the Yankees gifted the Red Sox an out with a poor send from the third base coach Luis Rojas after yet another single off of Miller.

The decision kept the Yankees’ lead at 2-0 and may have saved Chad Tracy from having even more scrutiny placed on his bullpen decisions this series.

Yankees get the scoring started with a Luis Garcia home run

After three and a half innings of a dominant pitching duel, the Yankees drew first blood in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card series when Luis Garcia took a sweeper and deposited it into the right field bleachers to give New York a 1-0 lead.

On Tuesday, that would have been enough to secure a win. The Red Sox now have to finally solve the Yankees’ pitching to ensure that’s not true on Wednesday as well.

White Sox sweep Astros, advance to ALDS

The White Sox completed their two-game sweep of the Astros with a 7-3 victory in Houston on Wednesday afternoon.

The White Sox jumped on the Astros for four runs in the opening inning – helped out by a pair of defensive miscues from the Astros – and held onto that advantage throughout the ballgame. They chased Astros’ ace right-hander Hunter Brown in that opening frame after throwing only 36 pitches.

Things got tight in the middle innings as the Astros got solo homers from Jeremy Pena, Cam Smith and Jose Altuve to pull to within one run at 4-3, but Anthony Kay did some fantastic work out of the bullpen in the fifth inning, stranding the bases loaded to keep the lead intact.

The next half inning, Chase Meidroth clubbed a three-run homer off of Bryan Abreu that increased their advantage to four runs and basically put the game out of reach. Neither team would score from that point forward.

Sean Burke worked the first four innings for the White Sox, striking out eight batters, but allowing three runs on four hits along the way. The White Sox’ bullpen kept the Astros off the scoreboard over the final five innings — with Huascar Brazoban, Anthony Kay, Jordan Hicks and Erick Fedde all doing strong work, allowing a combined one hit and one walk over five frames while striking out seven.

Next up for the White Sox will be a showdown against the divisional-rival Guardians in Cleveland, beginning in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon.

Chase Meidroth blasts three-run homer

After jumping out to an early 4-0 advantage in the opening inning, the White Sox watched the Astros claw back into the game with three solo home runs over the next four frames.

The Astros nearly went ahead with their rally in the home half of the fifth inning, but wound up stranding the bases loaded.

The White Sox’ offense then went to work in the sixth. Andrew Benintendi worked a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch-runner Luisangel Acuna who promptly swiped second base. Tristan Peters also worked a walk, leading Astros’ manager Joe Espada to pull Peter Lambert and turn to Bryan Abreu.

As soon as Abreu entered, the White Sox executed a double steal that put both runners in scoring position with nobody out. Chase Meidroth then strolled to the dish and obliterated a 3-1 slider for a 390-foot (102.0-mph EV) three-run shot that completely changed the complexion of the ballgame, increasing a 4-3 lead to 7-3.

The Astros have 12 outs remaining to make up at least four runs, or their 2026 season will come to an end.

Anthony Kay escapes bases-loaded jam in fifth

The Astros put serious pressure on the White Sox in the fifth inning as Cam Smith was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Jeremy Pena added a one-out single off of Huascar Brazoban, putting the tying run in scoring position for Yordan Alvarez.

That lead White Sox’ skipper Will Venable to go to his bullpen, getting left-hander Anthony Kay. After falling behind Alvarez 3-0, Kay battled back and ultimately got the likely American League MVP to fly out to left field. He then walked Isaac Paredes to load the bases before retiring Jose Altuve on a fly ball to right field.

We’re through five innings in Game 2 in Houston with the White Sox still clinging to a 4-3 advantage over the Astros.

Jose Altuve leaves the yard, Astros pull to within one

The Astros continued to flex their muscles in the fourth inning as Jose Altuve turned on a 1-1 slider from Sean Burke and launched a 353-foot (98.0-mph EV) solo shot into the Crawford boxes in left field — pulling the Astros to within one run at 4-3.

It’s the 28th postseason home run in the illustrious career of the 36-year-old second baseman. That puts him just one behind Manny Ramirez for the most postseason homers in MLB history.

The Astros certainly aren’t going down without a fight.

Matt Shaw enters Cubs’ lineup for Game 2

After an anemic offensive performance in Game 1 against the Padres on Tuesday evening, the Cubs aren’t making any major changes to their starting lineup as they fight to extend their season for at least one more game.

The only change that skipper Craig Counsell has made to his lineup is starting Matt Shaw at third base in place of Pedro Ramirez. Everything else will be exactly as it was in Game 1.

Expect superstar center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to lead the charge in a must-win game for the Cubs.

Sean Burke strikes out the side in third

Sean Burke delivered an awfully impressive showing in the third inning on Wednesday, striking out Jeremy Peña, Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes in succession.

After serving up solo homers in each of the first two frames, Burke wasn’t messing around in the third, going right after the heart of the Astros’ order.

He has allowed two runs on three hits while racking up six strikeouts through his first three innings of work. Burke’s pitch count sits at 56 (38 strikes) heading into the fourth inning.

Padres make minor lineup changes for Game 2

After drubbing the Cubs 9-0 in Game 1 of their Wild Card series on Tuesday night, the Padres opted to make only a couple of minor changes to their lineup for Game 2 on Wednesday evening.

Dustin Harris will start in left field and bat second for the Padres, replacing Samad Taylor who started there in Game 1. 20-year-old phenom Ethan Salas will make his first career postseason start behind the dish in place of Luis Campusano and will bat seventh for the Friars.

Xander Bogaerts will move up from seventh to sixth while Austin Hays drops from sixth to eighth against a right-hander. Jake Cronenworth also moves down in the lineup from eighth to ninth.

Astros inch closer on Cam Smith home run

The Astros continued to chip away at the White Sox’ lead in the second inning as Cam Smith walloped a 440-foot solo homer off of Sean Burker in the bottom of the second inning.

What looked like a massive four-run deficit in the top half of the first inning is now down to a manageable two-run difference heading into the third inning.

The Astros aren’t ready to go away just yet.

Astros get one back on Jeremy Peña homer

After a disastrous top half of the first inning, the Astros clawed a bit closer in the home half of the frame as Jeremy Peña clobbered a leadoff home run off of White Sox’ right-hander Sean Burke.

They still face a major uphill climb if they’re going to come back and force a Game 3, but they’re now one run closer heading to the second.

White Sox jump on Astros early in Game 2

The White Sox jumped out to another early lead against the Astros in Game 2 of their Wild Card series on Wednesday, ambushing right-hander Hunter Brown for four runs on four hits in the opening inning — with the Astros making a pair of defensive miscues to help the White Sox’ cause.

Sam Antonacci got the party started with a leadoff double, then raced around to score on an RBI single by Kyle Teel that gave the White Sox an advantage before an out had been recorded.

Miguel Vargas then reached on an error by third baseman Nick Allen — who was inserted into the Astros’ lineup on Wednesday to improve their infield defense. After Munetaka Murakami struck out, Andrew Benintendi delivered an RBI single and a second run scored as Lucas Spence made a throwing error on the play.

Tristan Peters then added another RBI single that increased the White Sox’ edge to 4-0 before right-hander Sean Burke even took the mound.

It’s an absolutely nightmarish start for the Astros who are going to have to stage a major comeback if they’re going to stave off elimination and force a Game 3.

Phillies outlast Braves to force Game 3

The Phillies outlasted the Braves in Game 2 of their Wild Card Series on Wednesday afternoon, using late home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper to tie the game in the eighth inning and then a go-ahead solo shot from Alec Bohm with two outs in the 10th inning to go ahead.

The two sides will now meet again in a do-or-die Game 3 on Thursday with the winner advancing to the NLDS and the loser heading home for the winter.

Aaron Nola is scheduled to take the ball in Game 3 for the Phillies with Grant Holmes likely to work in a bulk role for the Braves. The start time of that matchup has yet to be determined and will depend on how many other series go to a third and deciding game.

Alec Bohm gives Phillies lead in 10th

Alec Bohm delivered the Phillies’ biggest hit of the season on Wednesday, crushing an opposite-field solo shot off of Didier Fuentes with two outs in the top half of the 10th inning.

Can the Braves answer in the home half of the inning?

Braves and Phillies head to extra innings

Nine innings wasn’t enough for the Braves and Phillies to decide Game 2 of their Wild Card Series on Wednesday afternoon, so we’re heading for bonus baseball.

Didier Fuentes is on the mound for the Braves while Andrew Painter figures to go as long as he can for the Phillies.

Stay tuned, as this series could change dramatically at any instant now.

Extra innings at Truist.

How are you feeling, Braves & Phillies fans?

Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper go back-to-back to pull Phillies back into tie

Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper delivered back-to-back bombs off Dylan Lee to draw the Phillies back even with the Braves in the eighth inning Wednesday.

Just minutes after miscue in right field opened the door for the Braves to take a two-run lead in the seventh, Harper tied the game. It was a stunning result against Lee, who had faced 102 left-handed hitters this year and given up homers to none of them. He had a 3.09 ERA and 31 holds in his setup role, blowing just two leads all year.

Red Sox to remove Roman Anthony from roster

The Red Sox plan to replace Roman Anthony on their roster for their Wild Card series after he was diagnosed with damage to muscles in his wrist.

Jeff Passan of ESPN notes that it’s a different injury that the finger issue that cost him three months earlier in the season. The Red Sox are working to get approval to make a roster move before Game 2 against the Yankees on Wednesday night.

Jahmai Jones will start in Anthony’s place atop the Red Sox’ lineup and will function as their designated hitter against Yankees’ southpaw Max Fried on Wednesday evening in New York.

Boston outfielder Roman Anthony has damage to muscles in his wrist that is different than the finger injury he previously suffered, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said. Boston is looking to replace him on the roster, and Jahmai Jones will take Anthony’s spot atop the lineup tonight.

Nick Allen joins Astros’ lineup for Game 2

The Astros will roll out a nearly identical lineup on Wednesday as they attempt to stave off elimination in Game 2 of their Wild Card series against the White Sox.

The top eight in the lineup remain the same, with the only change coming as Nick Allen will start at third base and bat ninth instead of Taylor Trammell who hit ninth in Game 1. To make things work, Isaac Paredes will function as the team’s designated hitter while Yordan Alvarez will start in left field.

With their backs against the wall, the Astros will need a strong offensive performance to back ace right-hander Hunter Brown.

Braves take 3-1 lead after misplay from Bryce Harper in right field

Though little fault of his own, Cristopher Sánchez was knocked out of Wednesday’s game in the seventh inning, with the Braves scoring two runs on a walk, a sac bunt that resulted in no outs, a fly to right that Bryce Harper misplayed and a Matt Olson sac fly. That gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead while needing just six more outs to advance to the NLDS.

Harper’s misadventure in right field came on what seemed like a pretty routine flyball from Drake Baldwin. Of course, Harper has tons of experience in right field, but he moved to first base in 2023 after elbow surgery and only returned to the outfield this year as a result of the Luis Arraez acquisition at the trade deadline. What the Phillies really needed then was an outfielder, but they thought Arraez’s bat was too good to pass up and moved Bryson Stott from second to third, Alec Bohm from third to first and Harper from first to right in order to make room for him. They’ve mostly maintained that new alignment even with Arraez out for the Wild Card series because of an ankle injury.

Phillies escape bases-loaded jam, keep game 1-1

Cristopher Sánchez got a double play from Michael Harris II with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to preserve a 1-1 tie between the Phillies and Braves.

The Braves got singles from Ozzie Albies, Mauricio Dubón and Austin Riley in the sixth, but Albies decided to hold up at third on the third hit. Harris then hit a sharp grounder to first that Alec Bohm handled. Bohm threw home, causing Harris to let up a bit for no good reason. J.T. Realmuto got the first out and then made the throw back to first just in time to retire Harris.

Roman Anthony (hand) held out of Game 2 lineup

Roman Anthony (hand) is not in the Red Sox’ starting lineup for Game 2 of their Wild Card Series against the Yankees on Wednesday evening.

The 22-year-old outfielder was pulled from Game 1 on Tuesday in the sixth inning after aggravating a hand injury that cost him three months earlier in the season.

The Red Sox are still assessing whether or not they’ll replace Anthony on their roster for the Wild Card series, which would make him ineligible for the ALDS should they come back to advance.

Jahmai Jones will function as the team’s leadoff hitter and designated hitter against Yankees’ southpaw Max Fried. Nate Eaton will also draw a start in left field and bat ninth while Jarred Duran will start the day on the bench for the Red Sox.

Jahmai Jones is the designated hitter and Nate Eaton is in left field against Max Fried.

Roman Anthony is out.

Yankees shake up Game 2 lineup

Even after a 9-0 drubbing of the Red Sox in Game 1 of their Wild Card Series on Tuesday, the Yankees are mixing up their lineup against right-hander Sonny Gray in Game 2 on Wednesday evening.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. returns to the Yankees’ lineup, as do Luis Garcia Jr., Trent Grisham and Ryan McMahon with Paul Goldschmidt, Amed Rosario, Heliot Ramos and Anthony Volpe taking a seat for the Bombers.

Ben Rice moves up to the leadoff spot after his monster day at the plate in Game 1.

Ronald Acuña Jr. makes history on bases

As the venerable Sarah Langs noted, Ronald Acuña Jr. made some history on the basepaths with his two stolen bases in the opening inning of Game 2.

He became just the third player in franchise history with multiple stolen bases in a single innings in the postseason, joining Rafael Furcal (2005) and Ron Gant (1991).

He also became just the seventh player overall in MLB postseason history to swipe two bases in the first inning of a playoff game. The last time that feat was accomplished, was by Trea Turner in Game 2 of the 2024 NLDS.

Ronald Acuña Jr. is the third player in Braves history with two SB in a postseason inning, joining:

2005 NLDS G4 Rafael Furcal, 11th inning
1991 NLCS G2 Ron Gant, 3rd

7th in postseason history with 2 SB in the first inning of a game (2024 Trea Turner last, NLDS G2) https://t.co/p5UaXELyGR

Braves and Phillies deadlocked through 3

The Braves and Phillies remain in a 1-1 tie through three innings as both starting pitchers have settled in nicely.

Mahle has allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three batters over his first three frames, throwing 50 pitches (31 strikes).

Sánchez has been a bit less efficient, needing 54 pitches (34 strikes) to record his first nine outs – four of them via the strikeout. After allowing a leadoff walk to Ha-Seong Kim in the third inning though, he really dug in and fanned Ronald Acuña Jr. and Drake Baldwin before getting Ozzie Albies on a weak pop out to end the inning.

The Phillies are going to have to get much better work from their bullpen if they’re going to stave off elimination on Wednesday.

White Sox run back similar lineup for Game 2

Flying high off of their 6-3 victory over the Astros in Game one on Tuesday, the White Sox will run back almost an identical starting lineup as they look to advance to the ALDS on Wednesday.

It’ll be the same starting nine backing right-hander Sean Burke, with the only change being that Chase Meidroth and Braden Montgomery will swap spots in the lineup, with Meidroth batting seventh and Montgomery batting eighth.

The Braves struck right back in the home half of the first inning. Superstar outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. worked Cristopher Sanchez for a seven-pitch walk to open the inning. He then swiped second base as Drake Baldwin went down on strikes and stole third base uncontested while Matt Olson was at the dish with two outs.

Olson battled the Phillies’ southpaw until poking the eighth pitch of the at-bat into right field to plate Acuña with the equalizer. It looks like we’re going to have a battle on our hands in Game 2.

Phillies strike first in Game 2

The Phillies wasted no time getting on the board first in Game 2 as Trea Turner smacked a leadoff double off of Tyler Mahle. He then advanced to third on a ground ball off the bat of Kyle Schwarber. Bryce Harper followed with a run-scoring single that gave the Phillies an early 1-0 advantage for the second straight game.

Let’s see if they can hold on this time.

Mahle battled back to get out of the inning, but the Braves will be facing a 1-0 deficit when they come to bat in the home half of the first inning.

Braves look to Tyler Mahle to advance to NLDS

Braves fans were hoping for a major addition for their rotation at the August 2 MLB Trade Deadline, with Tarik Skubal and Jacob deGrom among the big names connected to the club, but they ended up acquiring Tyler Mahle from the Giants.

Mahle struggled to the tune of a 5.13 ERA through 13 starts with the Giants, so expectations were rather low. A veteran who could provide some innings for a shaky group, but not much more. Instead, the veteran right-hander ended up being one of the most important deadline additions across the entire league.

With an increased focus on his splitter, Mahle put up a sparking 1.99 ERA over nine starts with Atlanta to finish out the regular season. In 54 1/3 innings, he issued just nine walks while registering 48 strikeouts. A true game-changer for this hobbled rotation where Chris Sale was the only sure thing.

Mahle threw at least six innings in eight out of his nine starts. The lone exception was his final start against the Reds on September 24. In that start, he was tagged for two homers while allowing five runs in five innings.

What version of Mahle are the Phillies going to get today in his first ever postseason start? The one who posted a 2.24 ERA in four starts against them this season, or the one who stumbled in his final regular season start? The answer could be the difference between the Phillies going home or not.

Braves and Phillies announce lineups for game 2

The Braves and Phillies are just a half hour away from Game 2 of their NL Wild Card series. The Braves will be trotting out mostly the same lineup as they look to end the Phillies’ season, with one adjustment: Ronald Acuña Jr. is leading off.

This may not seem noteworthy, but Acuña Jr. has led off just three times since September 8th. That role is mostly held by Drake Baldwin. Baldwin will DH and hit second in this one, with Sean Murphy entering the lineup as the catcher and hitting eighth.

The Phillies made one major adjustment as well in their outfield, with Brandon Marsh entering the lineup.

Marsh sat out Game 1 with the Braves throwing left-hander Chris Sale, but he’ll be back in against Tyler Mahle. Marsh hit a career-high 18 home runs this season while stealing 11 bases and posting a .260/.304/.408 slash line.

Could Earth’s Magnetic Field Be Secretly Influencing How We Age?

Reducing Earth’s magnetic field to near zero changed how fruit flies aged, moved, and produced cellular energy. The effects depended on mitochondrial health, suggesting that this invisible environmental force may interact with metabolism in unexpected ways. Credit: Shutterstock

Shielded from most of Earth’s magnetic field, fruit flies with faulty mitochondria lived about 20% longer, but their physical performance declined.

Life on Earth has always operated within a constant, invisible background. The planet’s magnetic field continuously passes through every living cell, yet biologists still know very little about whether organisms actually need this environmental force to function.

When scientists nearly stripped away that magnetic background in an experiment with fruit flies, they found changes in how the insects’ cells generated energy, how well the flies moved, and how long they lived.

The effects centered on mitochondria, the tiny structures inside cells that produce much of the energy needed for life. Research led by Professor Lisa Chakrabarti and Jacob Reed at the University of Nottingham’s School of Veterinary Medicine & Science found that the flies’ responses depended on the health of this cellular machinery. Removing most of the magnetic field could improve one aspect of their lives while worsening another.

A longer life with a physical cost

For the study, published in Aging, the team used a specially designed shielding system to reduce the magnetic field surrounding the flies to near zero. They tested healthy flies alongside flies carrying a defect in Pink1, a gene associated with inherited early-onset Parkinson’s disease in humans. Comparing the two groups allowed them to investigate how flies with impaired mitochondrial function responded to the same environmental change.

The Pink1 flies lived about 20% longer under magnetic shielding, but their physical performance declined. Healthy flies showed improved movement along with changes in their health span, or the time spent in good health. The results suggest that an animal’s metabolic state helps determine its response to magnetic field strength, with longer survival and better physical function not necessarily going together.

Magnetic fields do more than guide migration

Doctoral candidate Reed said: “Research in this area is sparse, focusing mainly on how migrating animals sense magnetic fields, or on preparing humans for space travel. Yet we still know very little about why all living organisms need or don’t need a magnetic field to function normally in the first place.”

He continues, “This project brought expertise from physics, engineering, and biology to study fruit flies with novel, highly specialized techniques and equipment; to not only look at physiology but pathology too. It opens a potential new avenue for a non-invasive, mitochondria-targeted approaches that many diseases have been longing for. Hopefully, emphasizing that magnetic fields are fundamental to life beyond certain scientific niches.”

To investigate what was happening inside the cells, the team took high-resolution measurements of mitochondrial respiration, the process through which mitochondria use oxygen to help produce usable energy. They also used highly sensitive quantum sensors that exploit tiny defects within diamonds to detect changes associated with mitochondrial activity.

Reducing the magnetic field altered mitochondrial energy metabolism and levels of superoxide, a highly reactive molecule produced by mitochondria. These measurements linked the changes in the flies’ movement and lifespan to shifts in the cellular processes that supply their energy. They also showed why the effects of magnetic shielding could not be described as uniformly beneficial or harmful.

Has evolution made cells dependent on magnetism?

The findings raise questions about whether Earth’s magnetic field is part of the environment that cells have evolved to function within. Any use of magnetic fields to influence mitochondrial function in aging or neurodegenerative disease remains a prospect for further research.

Chakrabarti said: “We live our entire lives within the Earth’s magnetic field. It passes through our bodies, our cells and every living organism on the planet, yet we know surprisingly little about whether and how this invisible force affects the way our cells work.

“Our results raise the intriguing possibility that the Earth’s magnetic field forms part of the biological environment to which life has adapted throughout evolution. Understanding how cells sense and respond to magnetic fields could ultimately reveal new ways of manipulating mitochondrial function in aging and disease.”

Brazil’s presidential election is entering its final stretch, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro by three percentage points in the latest first-round polling, according to Bloomberg. A potential runoff between the two remains statistically tied, said the report.

The latest AtlasIntel poll for Bloomberg, conducted among 5,005 people between 23 and 28 September, gives Lula 45% and Bolsonaro 42% in the first round. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

Brazil is scheduled to hold the first round on 4 October, with a runoff on 25 October if no candidate secures more than 50% of valid votes.

Economy Lula, Bolsonaro neck-and-neck in runoff

The AtlasIntel survey gives 47.7% to Bolsonaro and 47.6% to Lula in a simulated runoff, putting the two effectively level within the poll’s margin of error.

Reuters described the result as a statistical tie, with the 0.1-point difference too small to establish a meaningful lead.

The latest survey marks only a marginal shift from the previous AtlasIntel poll, which had Lula at 47.7% and Bolsonaro at 47.4% in a simulated runoff. That 17–22 September survey covered 5,015 respondents and had the same ±1 percentage-point margin of error.

The AtlasIntel series has consistently shown a close contest between the two politicians.

The 23–28 September survey is the latest in a series of national polls released by AtlasIntel, following surveys on 23 September, 17 September, 10 September and 31 August. Each used a sample of roughly 5,000 respondents and carried a ±1 percentage-point margin of error.

Economy Bolsonaro emerges as Lula’s main challenger

Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, entered the presidential race as the leading candidate of Brazil’s Bolsonaro-aligned right after his father was barred from running.

His campaign has sought to capitalize on dissatisfaction with Lula’s government and broader anti-establishment sentiment, according to The Hill. The election is also unfolding amid scrutiny surrounding the Banco Master scandal, which has drawn attention to political figures and institutions across Brazil, the report added.

Bolsonaro denied wrongdoing but has faced an investigation into alleged financial crimes linked to his relationship with banker Daniel Vorcaro.

Economy Economy remains central to the campaign

Economic conditions remain another key issue in the election.

Brazil’s unemployment rate fell to 5.3% in the three months through August, according to the country’s statistics agency IBGE. It was the lowest rate for that period since the current methodology began in 2012. At the same time, informal employment remained significant, accounting for about 37.5% of the workforce.

Lula’s government has also sought to address household financial pressures through measures such as adding expanded benefits under its social welfare programme and plans related to delinquent consumer debt, according to Reuters.

The first-round vote will determine whether either candidate secures enough support to win outright.

If neither candidate reaches the required threshold, the contest will move to a second round on 25 October.

Researchers Uncover a Hidden Molecular Machine Parasites Need To Survive

Nature

Researchers have visualized two key stages of RNA processing in parasites that cause diseases such as sleeping sickness, Chagas’ disease, and leishmaniasis.

For nearly 40 years, scientists have known that trypanosomatid parasites depend on an unusual system for processing RNA. Now researchers have captured that machinery at near-atomic resolution, showing how its components assemble and operate during a reaction the parasites need to survive.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Liège and Rockefeller University, reconstructed the three-dimensional architecture of the trans-spliceosome, a massive molecular machine that prepares genetic messages for use inside trypanosomatid cells. The structures also identify features that differ from the RNA processing machinery found in humans, providing a potential starting point for developing drugs that interfere selectively with the parasites.

Parasites With an Unusual Way of Processing RNA

Trypanosomatids include the organisms that cause leishmaniasis, sleeping sickness, and Chagas’ disease, illnesses that affect several million people worldwide. Available treatments can be limited by toxicity, incomplete effectiveness, and drug resistance. Related parasites also infect livestock and plants, contributing to agricultural and economic losses.

Like human cells, trypanosomatids copy genetic information from DNA into RNA before proteins can be produced. Newly made messenger RNA must first be processed. In conventional RNA splicing, cellular machinery removes segments called introns and joins the remaining RNA sequences together.

nature Schematic Representation of Stage II of Trans Splicing via Spliced Leader
Prior to the reaction (trans-C* complex, left), the SL exon (purple) and the 5′ untranslated region of the pre-mRNA (5’UTR, pink) are positioned within the trans-spliceosome. During stage II, the SL exon is attached to the pre-mRNA to form the mature messenger RNA carrying the SL (trans-P complex, on the right), whilst the remaining RNA sequences are released in the form of a Y-shaped branched structure. The branching point is indicated in red. IGS: intergenic sequence. Credit: Théo Nadenoen

Trypanosomatids rely heavily on a different process. “Trypanosomatids use a very specific form of this process, known as Spliced Leader (SL) RNA trans-splicing,” explains Arnaud Vanden Broeck, a biologist heading the Laboratory of RNA Structural Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Liège.

“In these organisms, conventional intron splicing is extremely rare. Instead, virtually all of their messenger RNAs receive the same short RNA sequence, known as the SL RNA, at their 5’ end. This step is essential for the maturation of their RNAs and therefore for the functioning of their cells.”

Capturing the Trans-Spliceosome in Action

The trans-spliceosome carries out that RNA modification. Although scientists identified the machinery decades ago, its detailed organization and the coordination of its components had remained difficult to resolve.

“We didn’t know precisely how its various components were organized or how they worked together to carry out this reaction,” Vanden Broeck says. “To obtain high-resolution snapshots of this machine in action, we used cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), a technique that involves freezing molecules very rapidly and then reconstructing their three-dimensional structure from hundreds of thousands of images.”

Using cryo-EM, the researchers captured two consecutive stages of the reaction. One structure shows the point at which the SL RNA is attached to messenger RNA. The second captures the machinery immediately after that reaction has been completed.

A Molecular Machine With Parasite-Specific Parts

The reconstructions reveal how RNA molecules are positioned inside the trans-spliceosome and how the machine’s central components are arranged during the reaction. They also clarify the roles of several proteins found in trypanosomatids but absent from humans.

“Despite some similarities with the splicing machinery found in our own cells, the trans-spliceosome has numerous distinctive adaptations.”

Those adaptations show how an ancient form of RNA processing machinery has been remodeled in trypanosomatids to perform trans-splicing on a vast scale. Because the process is essential to the parasites and differs substantially from human RNA processing, some of its parasite-specific components could provide targets for future drug development. Identifying structural differences, however, is only an initial step toward determining whether particular molecules can be safely and effectively targeted.

A Structural Blueprint for Future Drug Research

The near-atomic structures provide researchers with a detailed molecular framework for studying how the trans-spliceosome works and how its individual components might be disrupted. Such structural information can help scientists identify binding sites and test compounds designed to interfere with proteins or RNA interactions unique to the parasite.

“Beyond advancing our fundamental understanding of the evolution of life, our study provides a concrete basis for designing molecules capable of specifically disrupting this machinery in parasites, while sparing human cells,” concludes Arnaud Vanden Broeck.

‘Delay is not my problem, as long as…’: Hero pilot Capt Smit Machchhar’s eerie foresight months before flydubai stabbing

0

Economy

Months before saving over 170 passengers from a mid-air disaster, the international ‘hero’ pilot Captain Smit Machchhar revealed that the everyday inconveniences of flying were the least of his concerns — as long as all aboard his plane walk out safe.

The resurfaced interview from 2025 is serving as Machchhar’s uncompromising, and now eerily prophetic, philosophy on flight safety.

Economy Survival over schedule

During his appearance on the podcast with Zalak Mehta, the veteran Boeing 737 captain brushed off the pressure of flight delays caused by seemingly minor technical glitches or medical emergencies.

Quick answers to key questions

During a Flydubai flight, co-pilot stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar in an attempt to crash the plane, leading to a violent altercation that endangered the lives of over 170 passengers.

Captain Machchhar expressed that his primary concern is the safety of passengers, stating that delays due to technical issues or medical emergencies are trivial compared to ensuring everyone exits the aircraft safely.

Despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Machchhar activated the cockpit door release switch, allowing passengers and crew to intervene and overpower the attacker, leading to a safe landing.

Captain Smit Machchhar is a seasoned pilot with over 15 years of experience, having logged nearly 9,750 hours primarily flying Boeing 737 aircraft before joining Flydubai in 2022.

Captain Machchhar has been hailed as a hero by global leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for his bravery and quick actions during the crisis.

“Delay is not my problem,” Machchhar stated bluntly in the interview. “As long as you’re walking out of the aircraft, is what I want.”

On Wednesday, his strict safety-first ethos was put to the ultimate test when Machchhar’s co-pilot reportedly stabbed him mid-air in an attempt to crash the aircraft.

According to Israeli officials, covered in blood on the cockpit floor and fighting severe injuries, Machchhar managed to activate the release switch to unlock the cockpit door.

His quick action allowed passengers and cabin crew to overpower the co-pilot. Two other flydubai pilots travelling as passengers stepped in to assist, successfully diverting the plane to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Every single one of the 174 people on board walked out of the aircraft—exactly as Machchhar has always insisted.

The pilot is now recovering in a hospital.

Economy ‘When things are going wrong…’

Machchhar had also highlighted the immense responsibility that aviation staff shoulder when a flight goes wrong.

“I’m not saying they’re trained to do surgeries and stuff, but then, they can save your life, you know?” the 50-year-old Mumbai native said in the podcast.

Expressing frustration over the general public’s perception of flight attendants and crew members, the pilot emphasised that their true value is only realised during unprecedented disasters.

“It is unfortunate how the entire outlook of people is there toward the crew, but when things are going wrong, you need them,” he added.

Economy A sudden career switch and mother’s fear

Aviation was never a childhood dream for Machchhar. After school, he had enrolled in a textile engineering course to carry forward his family’s trade, later pursuing management studies at Mumbai’s Welingkar Institute of Management.

It was during an aviation seminar there, at around the age of 19, that everything changed. “That’s where the aviation bug … really found me,” Machchhar recalled, adding that his mother was initially scared of his sudden career choice.

“Unlike a lot of other aviators right now, aviation was not a childhood dream,” he said. “It came along much later in my life.”

Despite his mother’s early apprehension, Machchhar pursued training in New Zealand. He went on to spend 11 years with SpiceJet, rising through the ranks to become a line training captain responsible for mentoring younger pilots, before joining flydubai in 2022. Over a 15-year career, the veteran Boeing 737 captain logged nearly 9,750 flying hours.

Economy ‘Blessed’ profession despite risks

Despite the extreme risks his mother once feared, Machchhar harboured no regrets about his choices.

When asked during the podcast to describe how it feels to be a pilot in just one word, his answer was simple and immediate: “Blessed”.

Economy Global praise for ‘true hero’

The captain’s split-second composure under unimaginable distress has drawn praise from world leaders.

“Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X. “In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him a “true hero”.

5 Cubs who won’t return next season as playoffs remain Chicago’s boogeyman

0

Sports news

What felt like a magical season at times for the Chicago Cubs ended in agony with a Wild Card series loss in San Diego. The Cubs had a pair of 10-game winning streaks in one month early on this year, and wound up getting an MVP-caliber season from Pete Crow-Armstrong. They even led the Majors in runs scored, in addition to continuing to be among the best defensively.

Chicago seemingly had the ingredients to go on a run, especially after fortifying their pitching staff at the trade deadline, but clearly, that wasn’t the case. With another early postseason exit on Jed Hoyer’s ledger, the need for changes is abundantly clear. Those changes start with letting these players go.

OF Seiya Suzuki

Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Seiya Suzuki signed a five-year deal with the Cubs ahead of the 2022 season, and it’s safe to say he lived up to it. He averaged 22 home runs, 73 RBI and an .823 OPS over that span, proving to be a rock-solid middle-of-the-order hitter for Chicago. He’s a player the Cubs should have an interest in re-signing, but will that actually happen?

Not only is Suzuki already 32 years old, but he’s one of the best position players in a remarkably weak free agency class. This will likely result in him receiving a contract that’s longer and more expensive than the Cubs will or should want to give him. They probably won’t keep both Suzuki and Ian Happ, and while Suzuki is the better player, Happ should come cheaper, which is music to Tom Ricketts’ ears.

LHP Shota Imanaga

Chicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Shota Imanaga has a 3.45 ERA in three big-league seasons, all with the Cubs, and he had a rock-solid 3.77 ERA in 32 starts and 174.1 innings of work in 2026. He’s gotten the job done more often than not with Chicago, and given their rotation weakness, letting Imanaga go sounds like a mistake in theory. There’s reason to believe the Cubs will go in this direction, however.

It comes down to his inability to keep the ball in the yard. Imanaga allowed 35 home runs this season, a shade under two per nine innings and the second most in the Majors. Given how unpredictable the wind can be at Wrigley, Imanaga can be great when conditions favor him, and he can be completely uncompetitive when they don’t, making him far too difficult to trust.

OF Michael Conforto

Chicago Cubs designated hitter Michael Conforto | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Michael Conforto signed a Minor League deal with the Cubs and wound up spending the entire year with the big-league club. He was quite good, too, slashing .240/.331/.469 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI in 113 games. He wound up finding his way in the team’s lineup pretty often as a DH against right-handed pitching.

While Conforto was a pleasant surprise, this was his best offensive season since the shortened 2020 campaign. Relying on him to repeat his success doesn’t sound like the best idea, and the fact that he doesn’t do much against lefties and isn’t any good in the field makes him a complicated player to roster. If he’d accept a cheap one-year deal as a bench piece against righties, it’s something to consider, but the Cubs should probably just let him go.

RHP Aaron Civale

Chicago Cubs pitcher Aaron Civale | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Speaking of pleasant surprises, Aaron Civale was an unsung hero for the Cubs. Acquired shortly after he was DFA’d by the A’s when the Cubs were in dire need of pitching depth, Civale went from having a 5.42 ERA as a primary starter with the Athletics to posting a 1.72 ERA in 18 appearances as a reliever with Chicago. His ability to go multiple innings helped the Cubs a ton.

With that being said, Civale probably wants to start, and even if he can’t find such an opportunity, he shouldn’t be relied on as a reliever either. The Cubs need more established options in their rotation and bullpen, and while Civale is fine as a depth piece, depth pieces are easily replaceable.

RHP Kevin Gausman

Chicago Cubs pitcher Kevin Gausman | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Kevin Gausman was the biggest name acquired by the Cubs at the trade deadline, but results were mixed in his short tenure on the North Side. He had some good outings, including delivering seven innings of one-run ball in a win against the Brewers, but he also had his share of clunkers. Gausman had a 4.51 ERA overall this year, marking a steep decline from his tremendous run with the Toronto Blue Jays, and his advanced metrics aren’t where they once were either.

Gausman will be 36 years of age in January, meaning he might never recapture the greatness he once had on the mound. Bringing him back as an experienced innings eater wouldn’t be the worst thing, but the Cubs need to be aiming higher. Even with Justin Steele and eventually Cade Horton set to return, the Cubs could use an ace. Gausman, at this stage of his career, is not that.

Joey Porter Jr. trade grades: Projected Cowboys depth chart after deal with Steelers

0

Sports analysis

Just before the brutal loss in Brazil to the Ravens, the Dallas Cowboys were connected to the Pittsburgh Steelers and disgruntled cornerback Joey Porter Jr. That turned out to not be just smoke four days later as the Cowboys have traded for Porter Jr. in a blockbuster deal transpiring heading into Week 4. Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix Sports was first with the news.

Trade! The Steelers and Cowboys are finalizing a deal sending CB Joey Porter Jr. to Dallas, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports. pic.twitter.com/yy9UlQHdZ3

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) October 1, 2026

The Cowboys are sending a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Steelers in the deal, which is a steep price. So let’s dive into the trade grades for the Cowboys and Steelers from this one before looking at the depth chart in Dallas after the deal and amid a number of injuries.

Cowboys and Steelers grades for the Joey Porter Jr. trades

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Cowboys grade: C

Joey Porter Jr. will make an impact on this Cowboys defense in a positive way. I don’t want that to go unnoticed when looking at this grade or reacting. But the process to get this point leaves a lot to be desired. Dallas puts themselves in a contractual bind with Porter Jr., who wanted out of Pittsburgh because he wants top-of-market money and wasn’t getting it, and now sacrifices draft capital that the Cowboys are already short on.

And you do this, even for a very talented young player, while talking about trying not to be a top-heavy defense in terms of the salary cap and while also not addressing an even more pressing need on the defense at linebacker. It’s not that Porter Jr. won’t help, it’s that the price paid both now and in the long-term is a bit too expensive for how much of an impact he’s most likely to make.

Steelers grade: A-

The Steelers deserve a ton of credit for how they handled this process. Negotiations between the front office and Porter Jr. clearly indicated that he was looking to be one of the league’s highest-paid cornerbacks, but Pittsburgh was (rightly) reluctant to pay that money. Then, when the season started, they gave their policy that they don’t negotiate in-season. Porter Jr. dug his heels in, and then Pittsburgh was still able to get a nice draft haul for what ultimately amounted to a malcontent expiring contract who wasn’t playing for you anyway.

Yes, Pittsburgh would love for it to be a 2027 second-round pick given the depth and strength of the draft class, but getting a 2028 second plus a late-rounder in 2027 could give them more flexibility to move around in 2027. It’s a fantastic piece of business and probably about as close to their “second-round pick” asking price that they were going to get.

Cowboys depth chart with Joey Porter Jr.

The Cowboys certainly felt compelled to make a move like this because of the rash of injuries that the secondary has been forced to endure over the first three weeks of the season. But with guys like Cobie Durant, Devin Moore and possibly Shavon Revel Jr. out and potentially needing Caleb Downs to move into a more traditional safety role, here’s what the Cowboys depth chart in the secondary likely looks like right now.

With the likes of Durant, Hooker and Revel on the injury report, the Cowboys made a number of veteran signings for the practice squad who feel noteworthy enough to mention when talking about the depth chart. Downs is going to play a pivotal role and have to grow up even quicker as he moves around the formation quite a bit.

But perhaps the most favorable read is zooming out and imagining this group when healthy. Porter Jr. is a great complement to Bland in this defense while Durant might be more valuable in the slot, sharing time with Downs. In any case, the secondary looks far more formidable than it did previously. That doesn’t alleviate questions in the middle of the defense, but it certainly won’t hurt matters for Christian Parker’s unit.

These Red Sox won’t be back in Boston next year after another Yankees embarrassment

0

Sports

Another year, another sobering postseason defeat at the hands of the New York Yankees. For the Boston Red Sox, this routine is getting tiresome. Major changes are needed in the offseason, even if better health for Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet (hopefully) provides a nice boost in 2027. These players won’t be back.

OF Jarren Duran

Red Sox fans wanted Jarren Duran gone last winter. And this summer, at the trade deadline. And pretty much every day in between, and since. It’s not the healthiest relationship, to put it bluntly. Duran’s attitude and off-field transgressions have not helped him, but he’s also just … not playing well.

This was a rock-bottom season for the 30-year-old. He managed 22 home runs and 21 stolen bases, which looks nice on the surface, but he hit .207 with a .627 OPS and 69 wRC+. He was on track for a career high in strikeouts, if not for games missed. Duran has a killer arm and the speed-power combo is tantalizing, but he’s far too unreliable at the plate and every trend line points in the wrong direction. He should be on the trade block as soon as possible.

LHP Patrick Sandoval

Patrick Sandoval – Boston Red Sox | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Patrick Sandoval’s return from UCL surgery this season was not so triumphant. He made 15 appearances (13 starts) with a 5.12 ERA and 1.68 WHIP, notching 73 strikeouts in 70.1 innings. While there’s hope the 29-year-old can look more like his pre-2025 self with greater remove from his injury, the Red Sox are simply too deep on the mound to justify keeping him around.

Once Garrett Crochet, Kutter Crawford and Johan Ovideo are ready for proper workloads again in 2027, available innings will be scarce in the rotation. Sandoval has the deception and swing-and-miss arsenal to potentially thrive in a bullpen role — his changeup is still a knockout pitch — but he’ll probably look for a better opportunity elsewhere.

LHP Aroldis Chapman

Aroldis Chapman – Boston Red Sox | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Aroldis Chapman has aged into his late 30s with remarkable grace. He’s still a wipeout closer, in many ways improving since he joined the Red Sox in 2025. Chapman is a back-to-back All-Star, with a 1.92 ERA and 1.12 WHIP this season. He put up 71 strikeouts in 51.2 innings, compensating for a slight downturn in velocity with sharper command and better secondaries.

Boston would no doubt love to re-sign Chapman, but there’s a rabid market for high-leverage relievers and Boston already has a ready-made closer in Garrett Whitlock, who’s under club control through 2028. The Red Sox don’t need to focus all their financial resources on Chapman when their bullpen can survive without him.

INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Isiah Kiner-Falefa – Boston Red Sox | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

This was a less disastrous season for Isiah Kiner-Falefa than a lot of Red Sox fans expected, but the journeyman infielder still offers precious little at the plate. He finished the season with a .633 OPS and 80 wRC+.

The defensive metrics are elite, but Boston has an abundance of quality infielders on the roster. Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard and Anthony Seigler all made strong cases for more at-bats this season, while top prospect Franklin Arias ought to debut in 2027. Curtis Mead will return from injury, too, coming off of a career year before he suffered a season-ending injury right after Boston’s trade deadline acqusition. There’s simply no space on the roster for IKF long term.

DH Masataka Yoshida

Masataka Yoshida – Boston Red Sox | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Masataka Yoshida’s contract has become a sunk cost for the Red Sox, but he was quietly a very solid situational hitter this season. He finished with a .746 OPS and 108 wRC+, with better splits against lefties (.774 OPS) than righties (.743 OPS). Yoshida is somewhat out of fashion as a slap-hitting DH with little value as a base-runner, but he never strikes out and he can provide value in a streamlined role.

The contract has made it hard to trade him, but Yoshida is a free agent after the 2027 season. Boston might need to eat some of Yoshida’s $18.6 million salary, or attach prospect capital to get him off the books, but a salary dump is finally a logistical possibility. Given the depth of quality position players on Boston’s roster, wasting a 26-man spot on Yoshida is less than ideal. This could be the offseason that Boston finally finds a taker on the trade front.

New food safety strategy aims to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases affecting 43 million people in the Americas

0

Medical

Washington, D.C., 30 September 2026 (PAHO) – Health authorities from the Americas today approved a new regional strategy to strengthen food safety systems and reduce foodborne diseases, which affect an estimated 43.7 million people and cause around 78,000 deaths in the Region each year.

Adopted by the 63rd Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Strategy and Plan of Action on Food Safety 2026–2031 provides a regional framework to help countries strengthen national food safety systems, institutionalize science-based risk analysis, and improve regional cooperation in preventing, detecting and responding to food safety risks.

Foodborne diseases place a significant burden on public health, food security, tourism and trade across the Americas. Children under five years of age, older adults, immunocompromised individuals and other populations in vulnerable situations are disproportionately affected.

Food safety risks are also becoming increasingly complex. Environmental and climatic factors can increase hazards such as mycotoxins and disrupt cold chains and water systems, while food fraud and new food technologies create additional pressures. As international trade expands, hazards can spread more rapidly across borders, underscoring the importance of strong surveillance systems, traceability mechanisms and effective cooperation between countries.

To address these challenges, the new strategy places greater emphasis on prevention and on strengthening the capacities needed to identify, assess and manage food safety risks across the food chain before they result in foodborne illnesses.

“Unsafe food is a preventable threat to health, but preventing it requires strong systems that can identify risks early and act before people become ill,” said PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa. “As food systems become more interconnected, countries need stronger surveillance, laboratory capacity, risk analysis and cooperation to detect hazards quickly and protect consumers.”

Despite progress in strengthening regulatory frameworks, inspection and surveillance systems, laboratory capacity and outbreak response across the Region, important gaps remain in the institutionalization of risk-based approaches, laboratory quality management systems and the systematic use of scientific evidence to guide decision-making.

The strategy responds to these gaps through three mutually reinforcing lines of action.

First, countries will strengthen national food safety systems across the food chain, from production to consumption, through stronger governance, policies and regulations, surveillance, laboratory services, technical capacity and multisectoral coordination.

Second, the strategy promotes the institutionalization of science-based risk analysis by making risk assessment, risk management and risk communication a routine part of decision-making.

Third, it seeks to enhance regional coordination and governance through improved information sharing, preparedness, coordinated response and stronger regional and international cooperation mechanisms.

By 2031, the strategy aims to increase from 8 to 15 the number of countries and territories producing surveillance bulletins on foodborne diseases or outbreaks, and from 8 to 15 those implementing risk-based food inspections. It also seeks to increase from 9 to 15 the number using risk assessment to inform food safety decision-making, and from 19 to 27 those participating in regional food safety cooperation and coordination mechanisms.

“Effective food safety depends on science, evidence and collaboration,” said Dr. Manuel Sánchez, Director of PAHO’s Pan American Center for Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Veterinary Public Health (PANAFTOSA). “Countries need the capacity to identify and assess risks, communicate them effectively and translate scientific evidence into decisions that protect consumers. The new strategy provides a framework to strengthen these capacities and promote greater cooperation across the Region.”

The strategy recognizes that food safety cannot be managed by the health sector alone. Consistent with the One Health approach, it promotes stronger coordination among the health, agriculture, environment, trade, industry and consumer protection sectors, recognizing the interconnections among human, animal and environmental health. This integrated approach is further reinforced through stronger laboratory networks, improved outbreak detection, enhanced food safety governance and closer alignment with international standards, including Codex Alimentarius standards.

The Strategy and Plan of Action was developed under the coordination of PANAFTOSA through an extensive consultation process with Member States and regional partners during the first months of 2026. A final virtual consultation held in March brought together ministries of health and agriculture from 27 countries and territories, whose contributions were incorporated into the final document.

PAHO, through PANAFTOSA, will support countries in implementing the strategy through technical cooperation, capacity building, regional networks, partnerships and resource mobilization. These efforts will enable countries to strengthen their food safety systems according to their national contexts, needs and capacities.

More powerful farms and much better markets can construct a more resistant coffee economy

A more powerful future for coffee begins by reinforcing the locations and neighborhoods where that journey starts. Credit: Edgardo Ayala/IPS

ROME, Sep 30 2026( IPS ) – Imagine your early morning coffee. You smell the fragrance as steam increases from the cup. It wisps and swirls, thins, then vanishes. You raise the cup to your mouth. The very first pure delight of the day.

That coffee might have started underneath shade trees in Ethiopia, on a Colombian hillside, in Viet Nam’s highlands or amongst the coffee farms of Brazil. Long before it reached your cup, somebody planted and tended the trees from which it came. Came the harvest. Ripe cherries were chosen with care, and the coffee started a journey that would bring it far from the location where it was grown.

Constructing a more powerful future for coffee for that reason starts where coffee itself starts: with efficient and durable farms, open and transparent markets, and higher financial chance in producing nations

Couple of farming items link individuals throughout such fars away. Coffee is amongst the world’s most commonly traded products. Coffee supports the incomes of approximately 25 million farmers worldwide, while millions more individuals take part in the financial activity developed along the coffee worth chain.

Coffee’s remarkable worldwide reach has actually developed incomes and financial chances throughout continents. It has actually likewise linked countless little manufacturers to a market in which shocks can propagate rapidly. Developing a more powerful future for coffee for that reason starts where coffee itself starts: with efficient and durable farms, open and transparent markets, and higher financial chance in producing nations.

International Coffee Day is a minute to commemorate what coffee has actually enabled. It is likewise a minute to ask what its future will need.

Current years have actually revealed why. International coffee rates have actually experienced big changes as weather condition has actually impacted production in significant producing nations and materials have actually tightened up. Dry spells, frosts and extreme rains can interfere with harvests, while bugs, illness, increasing expenses, geopolitical stress and shipping hold-ups can include more pressure.

That direct exposure is enhanced by the concentration of production in fairly couple of locations. Brazil and Viet Nam together represent almost half of worldwide coffee production, while 5 nations supply around 70 percent of international coffee bean exports. With such concentration, a shock in one significant producing area can rapidly resound far beyond it.

Those shocks are transferred unevenly through coffee worth chains, with manufacturers usually more straight exposed to changes in worldwide rates. The response is not to avoid rates from moving. Markets react to modifications in supply and need, and rates will undoubtedly fluctuate. Greater durability for that reason depends upon enhancing the capability of manufacturers and producing nations to adjust and react when conditions alter.

The very first concern is production itself. Coffee farming need to stay efficient and competitive while adjusting to altering conditions. More resistant farming systems, development and innovation, reliable management of bugs and illness, and much better tools for handling threat can assist support production and earnings and enhance financial investment in the future of the crop.

Transparent markets and prompt details are important. Much better and prompt info on crop conditions, stocks, trade circulations and rates minimize unpredictability and aid manufacturers, federal governments and services comprehend altering market conditions and change quicker. At a time when disturbance in one significant producing area can impact markets worldwide, global cooperation and higher openness end up being a lot more essential.

More powerful production and much better markets supply the structure. There is likewise a chance to produce more financial worth from the coffee that producing nations currently grow.

The bean’s financial journey is far from completed when it is gathered. Coffee is processed and transferred, then might be roasted, packaged, branded, dispersed and ultimately offered to customers. Each phase needs financial investment, competence and business, while developing chances to produce extra financial worth.

Much of the coffee produced in low- and middle-income nations is exported in raw type as green beans for processing and circulation somewhere else. Coffee for that reason typically gets in worldwide trade fairly early in its financial journey, leaving chances for producing nations to establish more financial activity around the later phases of the worth chain.

Where commercially feasible, enhancements in quality can assist manufacturers reach various and possibly higher-value markets. Undoubtedly Anthony Joshua, his sworn competitor for well over a years, would police for some acidic barbs as he lastly sat together with the Gypsy King, with just Kellerman’s pulpit of torpor in between them.

Following a quarter of an hour of stilted pleasantries, Fury chose to reveal his battle strategy. Perhaps kidology, however he informed the put together media that he would stroll down Deontay Wilder and beat him up in their February 2020n rematch. It appeared like an insane plan versus the department’s greatest puncher, however Fury did precisely that. He destroyed Wilder for the most amazing win of his storied profession.

Now 38, with Joshua set to turn 37 before they fulfill in Cardiff on December 11, the dancing days are most likely over for these 2 British Goliaths.

MORE:Why is Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua in Cardiff?

“I can tell you the strategy I’m going to impose, because that’s what I do,” he stated. “I’m going to come out and I’m going to blast him out of there.”

“Let’s go,” Joshua beamed in reaction.

“It will be Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. It will be the best man wins. Because I’m not going to run away, I’m not going to box. I’m going to throw down. And, from what I’m seeing, I’m going to catch him, and when I do, it’s going to be curtains.”

Requested for his action, Joshua responded: “Geyyt uuupppp!” It was a really satisfactory Tyson Fury impression and his competing broke out into a broad smile.

In numerous aspects, this exchange and numerous others were heartening to see. Fury’s unrelenting social networks diatribes towards Joshua and his camp have actually ended up being absolutely tiring, while Joshua has actually spoken spitefully of a male who has actually buffooned him mercilessly in the past.

In London on Wednesday, a little over 10 weeks far from battle night, they appeared practically happy to see each other. Maybe that’s the predicted action when you clap eyes upon somebody with whom you will divide a $200million bag.

MORE:What to learn about Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua

Sports news Is Peter Fury training Anthony Joshua?

Things make sure to get a little spicier in between from time to time. Joshua popped a prospective grenade into the detente when he talked to press reporters ahead of the primary interview, divulging that Fury’s separated uncle and previous fitness instructor Peter Fury has actually been using some guidelines for his preparations.

“I speak to Peter Fury,” Joshua stated “He’s prepared to assist me. Yeah, I’ll talk to him [before I fight Tyson Fury]”Not [to learn] about Fury, however about our training and how I can approach the battle. This is where I can enhance. Everyone’s going to inform me how to win. The most essential individual to listen to is myself at this point in my profession.”

That is definitely a maxim the gym-hopping Joshua has actually accepted, having actually been trained by Angel Hernandez, Robert Garcia, Derrick James, Ben Davison and Oleksandr Usyk’s group because leaving veteran cornerman Rob McCracken after his 2021 defeat to the skillful Ukrainian.

For the Fury battle, he is back with Davison, who handled Fury for his return from dependency and weight problems to title contention, including his significant draw with Wilder in late 2018.

“Don’t forget I left Ben Davison to opt for SugarHill [Steward] since he wasn’t sufficient and this is the exact same Ben Davison who Anthony Joshua Due to the fact that he wasn’t excellent enough,” Fury quipped.

He had warmer words for Joshua on the leading table as an interview open up to the general public played out before a rowdy gallery. Fury’s crowd were the more confrontational, booing and heckling Joshua, a minimum of up until their guy lavished his opponent with appreciation.

“The something I will state, all the small talk and all the attempting to offer this program aside, listen, this male is a two-time world heavyweight champ and an Olympic gold medalist,” Fury said. “He’s been a good example and a poster young boy for British boxing for many years.

“I mostly find myself defending my arch rival to fans that I meet in the street. And I say to them, ‘If you could achieve 10% of what this has achieved, you’d be doing well’.”

He included: “This man’s built like an Adonis; I’m built like a blancmange. But still, what I always say is you can’t put muscles on a tache. And when I crack him on the jaw with a big right hand, he’s going to go down.”

As soon as once again. Joshua hyped up the Fury fans to offer him more stick, chuckling along. Fury welcomed him for a post-fight Guinness. “I’m not sure I trust him,” Joshua chuckled before Kellerman cut in with another soliloquy.

It was the exact same offer when they went into an extended head-to-head. Fury nattered away, and Joshua laughed. They both smiled and dealt with the crowd.

It was suddenly, resoundingly, enjoyable. It will be various when they reconvene in Cardiff with fate looming in early December. Nerves will be a little bit more torn. For now, after marketing wrangling that rumbled on right up until this public launch, it was enough to be pleased that they were here. That in itself, lastly and long past due, seemed like enough of an accomplishment.

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reported on Wednesday that leaders for the CFP satisfied at the Big Ten head office in Chicago, where they took another action towards making a 24-team playoff a truth.

According to Dellenger, there is an agreement amongst those leaders that “a doubling of the postseason feels like a foregone conclusion.”

“We’ve worked through a lot of the other issues associated with [a 24-team] expansion and those things needed to happen before we started any kind of negotiation [over money],” CFP executive director Rich Clark stated, per Yahoo Sports.

According to Heather Dinichthere stay “questions looming” about the logistics, and no votes were taken in relation to a 24-team field.

“I think we’ve worked through a lot of the other issues that are associated with expansion, and those things needed to happen before we started any kind of a negotiation,” Clark stated, per ESPN “[Money] is not the only consideration, but right now it is an unknown because we have no idea what the revenue that could be generated is.”

It remained in August 2025 that the Big Ten very first proposed a 24-team field, with those talks “accelerating” this summer season. The SEC formerly opposed a 24-team field, while the ACC, Big 12 and Notre Dame “shifted positions from 16 to 24 teams in March,” according to Dellenger.

Now, CFP executives have actually gone into a 30-day window to work out the logistics of a broadened field with ESPN, and elements like scheduling, the effect on league national championship, and so on is being gone over.

Under a possible 24-team field, per Yahoothe brand-new 8 first-round video games would “ideally” begin a week after the routine season ends, Clark stated. The 8 second-round video games would “most likely” be used the school of the front runner in the 3rd week of December.

Among the leading elements is the monetary effect of removing championship game video games– an approximated expense of $250 million, per Dellenger, that the conferences would be seeking to recover in the CFP.

“The revenue is an unknown,” Clark stated, per Yahoo “That’s why we’re in this negotiating window.”

CFP executives and ESPN supposedly have till Oct. 9 to come to terms about the logistics of the 24-team field. If not, authorities will take it to the “open market,” per Dellenger.

“I certainly would say we reserve the right to use the whole window,” Clark stated, per ESPN. “It is in-depth and extensive, and there’s a great deal of problems to cover. It’s a 30-day window for a factor, and we might require to utilize everything.

In the meantime, there’s absolutely nothing set in stone– however all indications indicate a 24-team playoff getting to some point in the seasons to come.

Following the statement of the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro designs, AirPods 5, and brand-new Apple Watch updates, Apple is currently getting ready for another huge release in October, this time concentrating on clever home items. According to Bloomberg’s Mark GurmanApple CEO John Ternus is preparing his push for a brand new clever home center, which has actually long been reported to be presented by Apple, the very first upgrade to the

HomePod mini because its launching, and the 4th generation of the Apple Television 4K. The highlight of all of these items, per Bloomberg, is Siri AI, presented with iOS 27 and set to broaden to brand-new languages in the coming months.

Siri AI was at very first assured throughout the WWDC 2024 keynote as part of the Apple Intelligence statements. While Apple had the ability to provide fundamental AI functions, it was just with the aid of special Google Gemini designs integrated with Apple’s Foundation Models and Private Cloud Computing that Siri was lastly launched.
As the star of these items, this brand-new Siri will be accountable for using individuals’s individual details, such as messages, emails, notes, and pictures, and assisting you with on-screen information, Visual Intelligence, which might teach you how to do a dish based upon what you reveal the gadget, in addition to other tools like developing faster ways with natural language, consisting of automations for home, appropriate Genmoji, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. Here’s what Apple is anticipated to reveal in October (and no, brand-new Macs aren’t anticipated in the meantime).

Smart home center

After years of hold-ups due to the dull Siri, this brand new clever home center will include a 6-inch square screen that can rest on a counter top, looking like the iMac G4– comparable to a robotic model Apple itself dripped– or install on a wall. The gadget is anticipated to be as thick as an iPhone with a huge black bezel that looks like an old iPad.

According to Bloomberg, this wise home center will assist a number of individuals in a family by acknowledging them by voice or when they approach the item. Depending upon who neighbors, this gadget will tap individuals’s contacts, messages, calendar consultations, and other information.

Bloomberg states Apple will provide facial acknowledgment that is less reputable than Face ID, so users may require to verify info on their iPhone if they do not wish to utilize just voice or their face. According to the publication, Apple imagines users putting numerous of these items throughout your home so individuals can interact through it, see videos, make FaceTime calls, and so on.
When it comes to the very first generation, Apple is concentrating on a primary front-facing electronic camera and a number of microphones and speakers. No rear cam is anticipated. The gadget will likely require to be plugged in at all times, and it will be readily available in basic gray aluminum. The screen will be tiltable forward or backwards. In the future, Apple will launch a bigger 9-inch screen variation with a robotic arm with 360 degrees of flexibility.

HomePod mini 2

Presented in 2020, Apple has actually never ever upgraded the hardware inside the HomePod Mini. While the business has actually revitalized a few of these speaker colors throughout the years, Bloomberg recommends the brand-new variation will look comparable to the present version, however with brand-new colors and enhanced processors. Amongst the brand-new choices, the HomePod must be available in green and pink, which need to be contributed to the dark and silver designs. While the reporter does not point out which processor the brand-new HomePod mini will include, it states that it will suffice to support Siri’s effective AI designs.
If that ends up being precise, it will be intriguing to see whether Apple would want to include an A17 Pro or an M1 chip to this speaker, in addition to 8GB of RAM, considering that these are presently the minimum requirements for Apple Intelligence. While the business might state a gadget focused just on audio may not require a chip that effective or that much RAM, we’ll still need to wait on the main statement.
That stated, Apple currently raised rates for the HomePod mini a couple of months back, so a brand-new generation may not be more expensive. Still, it’s a bit worrying that we have not heard news about the speakers’ audio abilities. The HomePod mini currently costs more than the majority of speakers of its size, while doing not have bass and a satisfying noise. Even if this generation brings Siri AI, a bad audio experience may make this gadget a failure.

Fourth-generation Apple Television 4K

nature news Close up shot of an Apple TV 4K with the Siri Remote on a table

José Adorno/BGR

In the exact same report, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recommends that the 4th generation of the Apple television 4K is can be found in October. According to the reporter, Apple

will likewise consist of a quicker processor to support the brand-new Siri AI, however the style needs to stay the very same. Given that the present Apple television has an A-series processor, it’s not improbable to picture Apple including the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro chip to this brand-new device, together with 8GB of RAM.

Far, Apple has actually been actually peaceful about the Apple Television and tvOS 27. While we were lastly noting some functions that got here for the Apple television with this huge software application upgrade, Apple does not highlight them on its os website, and the existing setup makes it odd that the Apple television is the only platform without Apple Intelligence or Siri AI.
According to MacRumorsdripped information recommends a brand-new design will be launched quickly. While the outside style need to be the exact same, this brand-new variation will likely get Apple’s N1 connection chip with Wi-Fi 7 assistance and a modified Siri Remote. Now, it’s uncertain what’s brand-new with this Siri Remote, even though appropriate Find My assistance has actually been a function demand for years. We likewise hope that as soon as Apple presents the brand-new Apple television, the business will speak more honestly about tvOS 27 and whether this set-top box will likewise support brand-new image and audio abilities from the current TVs and projectors.

FORMULA FOR FAILURE OP-ED: Fenced in– why City Power’s ‘ringfencing’ in Joburg is a 30% earnings grab

0

Trending topics

From 1 October 2026, City Power is formally “ringfenced”. States a letter to consumers dated 21 September 2026 from the energy’s acting CEO, Charles Tlouane. In truth it’s ringfencing in name just.

Check out the letter carefullyand it explains something rather various. The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) will continue gathering every rand that clients spend for electrical energy. It will keep 30% off the top. The staying 70% will be passed to City Power within 48 hours.

That is not ringfencing. It is a very first charge by the investor on the gross earnings of a business that currently can not cover its expenses.

What the letter states– and does not state

The majority of the seven-page letter “assures” consumers that absolutely nothing has actually altered. The billing remains the exact same. The account numbers remain the very same. The payment channels remain the very same. There is no City Power checking account to pay into.

The compound beings in one sentence: “70% of electrical power profits gathered on behalf of City Power will be moved to City Power within 48 hours of collection, while the City of Johannesburg will keep the staying 30%.”

The letter does not state what the 30% is for. It does not state how the figure was determined, or what City Power gets in return. It does not state what ends up being of City Power’s internal overdraft with the City, which supposedly stood at about R19.1-billion on 31 March 2026.

City Power, the letter states, will then handle “its allotment”. The word is exposing. A business makes earnings. A local department gets an allowance.

The letter is signed on behalf of an acting CEO, at an energy that has actually seen continual high turnover in its board, CEO, CFO and COO posts given that 2017.

Ringfenced 26 years back– on paper

City Power is not a local department. It is a business, developed in November 2000, with its own board, its own executives and its own monetary declarations. CoJ is its sole investor.

Producing a ringfenced electrical energy organization was the extremely function of corporatisation. A business was anticipated to bill its clients, gather its earnings, pay its providers, preserve its network and account to its investor for the outcome.

That the City now provides ringfencing as a reform, 26 years later on, is an admission that corporatisation was burrowed long earlier. Billing and collection were pulled into the City. Electrical energy earnings was swept into the community swimming pool, and City Power was restored whatever the City chose it might spare.

A report by the Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) entitled Powering Joburg’s Turnaroundreleased on 29 September 2026 in its Johannesburg Matters series, explains the outcome as “a nontransparent and possibly approximate monetary relationship in between the City and City Power”.

The earnings declaration, upside down

A regular electrical power circulation business expenses its clients and banks its profits. From that gross income, it spends for the electrical power that it purchases, its personnel, and its operating and upkeep expenses.

What is left need to cover financing expenses, devaluation and amortisation, and after that tax. From the net surplus after tax, the board maintains what business requires to buy its network and its development. Just then does the investor get a dividend.

The dividend is usually at the bottom line of the earnings declaration. It is paid of any net surplus after kept incomes, and just if there is a surplus.

The CoJ plan turns this upside-down. The investor is paid initially, from the leading line– before Eskom, before incomes, before a single transformer is changed. It is paid whether City Power makes a surplus or a loss. And it is paid in money, within 48 hours.

This is not a dividend. It is an ensured 30% levy on gross money gathered.

trending topics Kriel Power Station in Mpumalanga, South Africa. (Photo: Radio Workshop)

The math does not work

For a normal local electrical energy supplier in South Africa, bulk buy from Eskom comprise about 70 %of its overall operating expense.

It for that reason requires to be revealed that the 70 %of the earnings gathered that is moved to City Power will suffice to pay Eskom, City Power’s technical and non-technical losses, personnel, specialists, products, upkeep, financing and network renewal expenses.

It is not enough; something needs to provide. Personnel are paid initially, since they should be paid. What offers is whatever else.

From 2019, an expanding space opened in between City Power’s expense and its earnings. By 2025, the deficit was R4.3-billion, omitting capital grants and contributions.

City Power’s overdraft with the City apparently grew from R9.98-billion in June 2023 to about R19.1-billion by March 2026. Its facilities stockpile is stated to be at R44.25-billion. Planned upkeep and capital investment have actually consistently fallen listed below target.

Eskom has actually been the other casualty. After years of disagreements, City Power’s financial obligations of R5.25-billion to Eskom were apparently settled in August, however there has actually been no main declaration on where the cash originated from. A more R2.3-billion in historical financial obligation stays, in addition to a bank account of R1.86-billion that fell due at the end of August 2026.

trending topics Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa (left) briefs the media in June 2025 on the dispute resolution process between Eskom and City Power. (Photo: Sharon Seretlo/ Gallo Images)

Consumers pay the last rate– considerably increasing varieties of forced disruption reports, with repair times substantially longer than standards in many established and establishing nations.

This is the doom loop. Insufficient money implies deferred upkeep, repair and reinvestment in business, which in turn suggest more failures and greater losses. More failures and greater losses suggest even less money.

All of the danger, none of the ways

The plan offers the City certainty. Its 30% shows up whatever occurs. City Power brings whatever else. Eskom tariff boosts, electrical energy theft, non-payment, cable television failures and the expense of obtaining all arrive at the 70% of earnings it gets.

The letter states that higher control over resources “will likewise bring higher obligation”. That is the incorrect method round. If City Power is to be held liable for the results, the plan needs to be revealed to be able to money what City Power is anticipated to provide.

The CDE report cautions of “a product threat of structural insolvency”. A set 30% piece off the leading line does not minimize that danger. It locks it in.

A number without a basis

To be reasonable, in concept, the billing and main earnings collection by the City on behalf of City Power is not always undesirable. A main collection plan might still secure City Power’s income if the guidelines, reconciliation, transfers and oversight were enforceable and transparent.

The criticism, nevertheless, is that the revealed plan offers no showed expense basis for the 30% retention, or guarantee that City Power’s staying money will be appropriate.

CDE’s report keeps in mind that the City devoted to the 70/30 split in November 2025. It discovers that “it is unclear what unbiased aspects the 70/30 split is based upon” and alerts that the split “threats ending up being an approximate guideline instead of a reliable financing plan”.

It needs to be kept in mind that the City might likewise have genuine claims on electrical power earnings, consisting of assistance for indigent families and other local services offered on behalf of City Power.

Those claims ought to be specific, transparent, allocated and budget friendly. They can not be a flat portion, set without referral to what it costs City Power to purchase electrical power, and City Power’s other effectively and wisely sustained expenses to keep the network up and running.

The letter conjures up National Treasury’s Metro Trading Services Reform and funders such as KfW. It is reasonable to ask whether either would acknowledge an unverified, surefire 30% piece off the leading line as ringfencing.

What genuine ringfencing needs

Authentic ringfencing appreciates the structure of the earnings declaration.

  1. Functional top priority: Profits should initially cover bulk electrical energy purchases, staffing, operations, upkeep and financial obligation maintenance.

  2. Property renewal: Staying funds should be assigned to prepared network upkeep and capital expense.

  3. Social commitments: Transparent, allocated allowances ought to money indigent assistance.

  4. Investor return: Just real net surpluses might be dispersed to the town as dividends.

None of this reasons City Power’s own failures– bad management, maladministration, procurement corruption and scams, high technical and non-technical losses, the high turnover of board members and executives, and the deficiency of technical abilities. These need to be repaired too.

The City has actually not shown that even a well-run City Power might fulfill its commitments and sustain its network under the 70/30 plan. On the face of it, the plan would appear to predestine the energy for failure in the very best of scenarios, and these are not the very best of scenarios.

Johannesburg votes on 4 November. Whoever governs the City later on must ditch the 30% piece off the leading line and change it with a correctly corroborated and defensible transfer that City Power can pay for.

Till then, City Power is not ringfenced. It is fenced. DM

The chairperson questioned why Sibanyoni had actually intervened in an existing business relationship. Sibanyoni stated he was acting for GCBS over the R50,000 Putco paid per bus, which he argued was inadequate to cover funding and operating expense.

He stated he promoted the payment to increase to about R90,000 per bus to cover instalments, running expenses and motorists. The taxi association likewise desired a brand-new contract enabling GCBS to get buses and looked for neighborhood and traditional-leader sponsorships and advancement assistance.

The proof put Sibanyoni’s intervention directly inside an existing Putco-GCBS industrial plan, raising concerns about his function in promoting a considerably bigger payment under the Moloto Road agreement.

CCTV video from Putco’s Moloto depot recorded armed guys holding employees at gunpoint and torching buses on 27 January 2025. A combustible liquid was sprayed over the buses before they were set alight. In all, 51 Putco buses were burnt throughout 3 depots.

Sibanyoni rejected participation in the attacks, and rather recommended Putco might have torched its own buses amidst labour and market conflicts, although he had no proof for the theory.

Chaskalson challenged this claim, mentioning that no strike or market disagreement was under method at Putco when the buses were torched.

Sibanyoni preserved that individuals associated with obstructing Putco buses might possibly have actually been connected to the attacks.

Chaskalson distilled the action: “We do not wish to offer.”

Sibanyoni’s response was similarly plain: after getting Putco’s reaction, “we chose not to pursue the matter”. DM
