Citi Research note reframes Aave as part of a larger financial ecosystem. “While Aave would definitely be categorized as a crypto native lender, we see Aave as the beginnings of a spread out collateral mobility protocol for tokenized capital markets,” Citi Research said in a note published today. “We see collateral mobility being one of the most significant use cases of tokenization, with uses for us in tens of trillions of traditional finance.”
What happened: Aave Beyond Lending
Citi Research assumes that at the core, the assets that get tokenized define what assets will be onboarded to the blockchain, stablecoins form the settle layer, and protocols like Aave define what collateral can be financed with and how it is used and pledged as collateral for capital markets.

Citi research highlights Aave V4, Horizon, and GHO as signs of the convergence of collateral and liquidity and finance. Horizon is Aave’s institutional liquidity market; Gate markets are meant to be permissioned markets for the use of tokenized money market funds as collateral.
According to Citi Research, this architecture closes the gap between on-chain liquidity and real-world assets such as money market funds, private credit, government bonds, and eventually, equity. A stablecoin, as the truest and most liquid potential settlement layer, could comprise the entire tokenized finance stack.

Why Collateral Mobility Matters
Citi Research explains it is the ability to efficiently move collateral around markets so that does not require or involve a sale. This function is the foundation of the repo markets, securities lending, and prime brokerage, and enables global liquidity in traditional finance. In DeFi, collateral has typically been crypto-native assets like ETH and WBTC that are volatile and without fixed income-like cash flows.

Tokenization transforms this dynamic by offering yield-generating, regulated instruments on-chain. Citi Research contends that such instruments including Coinbase Tokenized Stocks, on April 25, 2026 one-to-one and institutional tokens like USYC and USTB, for example could always be productive collateral without having to liquidate.

For instance, a retail user might hold a tokenized equity position with self-custody on Aave V4 and borrow USDC on top of it without having to exit the position. This lessens the risk of selling to realize the yield exposure while unlocking liquidity, an effect, which could benefit both retail and institutional market participants. For developers, it opens up design space for treasury-principal markets and a broader set of composable treasury products.

Who Is Affected and What Happens Next
Implications ripple through the ecosystem. Investors and funds can benefit from productive collateral, albeit with some additional smart contract, counterparty, and regulatory risk. Institutions can learn from Aave V4 to explore tokenized assets as collateralized borrowing and re-collateralization. Exchanges and custodians can experiment with flows through Aave V4 and Horizon to between CEX & DEX.

Regulators face new questions on the scope of eligible collateral rehypothecation custody and investor protection. A broader context supports the theses and scenario. Citi forecasts tokenization could reach multiple trillions of dollars by the end of the decade on stablecoins, MMFs and private credit.
Next milestones are full production of Aave V4, rise of Horizon and Gate in the institutional market, clear regulation of tokenized securities as collateral, and performance of on-chain prime brokerage to meet compliance. If successful, collateral mobility can reorient Aave from a DeFi lender to the infrastructure behind tokenized capital markets.
