Oct 15 2026 (IPS) –
A safe home is more than a roofing system over our heads.

It is the structure of health, security, chance and human self-respect.

For billions of individuals, that structure stays out of reach.

According to UN-Habitat, 2.8 billion individuals around the world face some type of insufficient real estate.

More than one billion reside in run-down neighborhoods and casual settlements.

And over 300 million individuals are homeless.

The real estate crisis is unfolding together with a broader resist hardship.

The United Nations approximates that 826 million individuals will reside in severe hardship in 2026– enduring on less than 3 dollars a day.

That’s one in every 10 individuals worldwide.

And working uses no assurance of leaving hardship.

In 2025, 284 million employees were residing in severe hardship.

3.8 billion individuals stay without any type of social defense.

Dispute, climate-related catastrophes, displacement and increasing living expenses are putting additional pressure on susceptible neighborhoods.

Versus this background, the 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty requires Safe Homes for Allunder the style United for Peace and Human Rights

The United Nations is prompting federal governments to focus on sufficient real estate, set in motion resources and include individuals experiencing hardship in choices that impact their lives.

Since ending hardship implies more than increasing earnings.

It suggests making sure that everybody has a safe location to live, access to necessary services, and the chance to construct a safe and secure future.

This October 17th, the message is clear:

A safe home is not an opportunity. It is a human.
