Unlike its rivals, Nintendo’s consoles aren’t understood for going after processing and visual power, rather concentrating on development and user experience. While Sony and Microsoft complete over tech specifications, consoles like the Wii and Nintendo Switch have actually flown off racks with their non-traditional techniques to video gaming. That’s why, though the Nintendo Switch 2 is a significant upgrade over the initial, it can’t equal the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X in speed and power regardless of those consoles being over 4 years older.
Similar to with the initial Switch, which was less effective than the then-three-year-old PlayStation 4 at launch, the Nintendo Switch 2 sacrifices hardware power for the benefit of portable mode and imaginative Joy-Con functions. While the Nintendo Switch 2 is outplayed by its current-gen competitors, in general, it’s a more effective console than the PS4. That’s evidenced by how well the hybrid console runs ports of requiring video games, consisting of brand-new and approaching releases like “Diablo IV,” “Resident Evil Requiem,” and “Final Fantasy VII Revelation.”
Here’s how the Nintendo Switch 2 and PS4 compare in regards to processing power, along with how the hardware compares to the PS4 Pro.
Nintendo Switch 2 has a more powerful processor than the PS4
Nintendo just reports utilizing a customized NVIDIA processor for the Switch 2’s CPU and GPU, so we need to depend on information from specialists, consisting of reporters and video game designers , who’ve compared it to other hardware. According to Digital Foundrythe Nintendo Switch 2 utilizes a Nvidia T239(stated to be comparable to the T234) utilizing the Ampere architecture.
The Switch 2’s CPU is an eight-core ARM Cortex A78C with 12GB of RAM; 2 cores and 3GB of RAM are booked for the hardware itself, leaving 6 cores and 9GB for video games and video game designers. Sony notes the PlayStation 4’s CPU as an AMD x86-64 Jaguar with 8 cores and 8GB of RAM. Surprisingly, the PS4 reserves the exact same variety of cores and quantity of RAM as the Switch 2, however because Nintendo’s console has more to begin with, it triumphes.
When it comes to graphics, the Switch’s GPU is most comparable to the AMD RX 570 Mobile in portable and RX 560 when docked, or comparable to the NVIDIA RTX 2050. These are lower-end GPUs, particularly compared to the kinds utilized for contemporary video gaming computer systems, however the custom-made processor permits the console to show 4K graphics when docked, 1080p in portable mode, and perform at approximately 120fps. Frame rate depends upon the video game. A lot of will not have the ability to accomplish the optimum, particularly graphically extensive ones. Still, the Switch 2 has a greater ceiling than the PS4, which has an AMD Radeon GPU that’s restricted to 1080p and 60fps.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 quite plainly triumphes over the base PlayStation 4, the PS4 Pro is another story. Launched 3 years after the initial (and simply months before the initial Nintendo Switch), the PS4 Pro’s GPU is over two times as effective as that of its predecessor. When it comes to its processor, the Pro’s CPU is around 30 % faster.
With these improved specifications, the PS4 Pro can high end video games to near 4K and output some at a native 2160p. The Switch 2 gain from its processor’s extra cores, however contrast tests reveal that Pro runs graphically requiring video games simply as well, if not much better, than Nintendo’s console in docked mode.
That’s excellent for a console that’s a years old, which is why it’s still worth purchasing a PS4 Pro. While you’ll lose out on brand-new video games like “Marvel’s Wolverine” and “Grand Theft Auto 6,” an utilized PS4 Pro is an economical option to paying current-gen console costs.
