Matric exams 2026: Three-Day break announced as elections disrupt timetable

South Africa’s 2026 matric examinations will take a three-day break as the country prepares for its local government elections.

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams will pause from Tuesday, 3 November, until Thursday, 5 November. Candidates will return to examination rooms on Friday, 6 November.

The change follows the scheduling of local government elections for Wednesday, 4 November. Additionally, Monday, 9 November, will serve as another non-examination day.

Education authorities have adjusted the schedule to protect examinations from election-related disruptions. Political gatherings and community protests could affect schools serving as examination centres.

During a readiness briefing on 8 October, Umalusi chief executive officer Mafu Rakometsi confirmed the changes.

“As was the case in 2021, this year’s examination timetable has had to be amended to accommodate the upcoming local government elections,” Rakometsi said.

Umalusi had already identified political activities and community protests as possible threats to examination operations. Consequently, the council will work with assessment bodies and provincial education departments to minimise disruptions.

The organisation also wants schools to maintain safe, quiet environments throughout the examination period.

Rakometsi urged political leaders, community representatives, school principals, teachers and parents to protect candidates. He highlighted the importance of uninterrupted study time, especially during weekends and school holidays.

Many examination centres also provide extra lessons to help learners prepare. Therefore, Umalusi wants stakeholders to minimise political activities around these facilities.

The council stressed that election-related disruptions must not unfairly disadvantage any candidate.

The NSC examinations began nationwide on Tuesday, 13 October, and are scheduled to end on Thursday, 26 November.

Candidates should check the official timetable carefully to confirm their subjects, examination times and preparation plans.

The week beginning 2 November features Physical Sciences and Technical Sciences papers before the election-related break.

Date Time Examination
Monday, 2 November 09:00 Physical Sciences Paper 2 – Chemistry (3 hours); Technical Sciences Paper 2 (1½ hours)
Monday, 2 November 14:00 Religion Studies Paper 1 (2 hours)
Tuesday, 3 November — No examinations
Wednesday, 4 November — No examinations
Thursday, 5 November — No examinations
Friday, 6 November 09:00 isiZulu, isiXhosa, siSwati and isiNdebele Home Language Paper 1; First Additional Language Paper 1; Second Additional Language Paper 1 (2 hours each)
Friday, 6 November 14:00 Consumer Studies (3 hours); Hospitality Studies (3 hours)

Candidates can use the three-day break to revise upcoming subjects and strengthen weaker topics. However, they should continue checking official education announcements for any further timetable updates.
