Dealership service departments are considered the most reliable option for vehicle maintenance, as customers trust manufacturer-certified technicians to perform routine and complex services with the expertise needed to ensure long-term vehicle integrity.
Authorized service centers are increasingly prone to catastrophic failures, as evidenced by recent dealership fires and a Tennessee customer’s harrowing experience. After a standard oil change, a woman’s Bronco Sport erupted in flames, which a secondary inspection revealed was caused by technicians draining the transmission fluid instead of the engine oil—a negligent error leading to a $15,000 repair estimate.
Dismissing the car’s issues as minor, the dealership failed to identify that their technicians had drained the transmission fluid instead of the engine oil. This error caused $15,000 in damage, further exacerbated by the vehicle’s existing history of engine-bay wiring defects.
Manufacturers must address recurring negligence in franchised service centers. When customers pay premium rates for certified maintenance, destroying a vehicle through basic errors like draining the wrong fluid is an unacceptable breach of trust. Ford and other manufacturers must mandate stricter accountability and quality control to prevent these preventable disasters from eroding consumer confidence.
