Newborn Baby Girl Found Abandoned in Woolworths Bag in KwaZulu-Natal Bush

A newborn baby girl has survived a shocking abandonment after rescuers discovered her inside a shopping bag in KwaZulu-Natal.

Two people stumbled upon the infant in Oakford on Tuesday, 13 October. They heard her cries while walking towards a nearby tuckshop.

Curious about the sounds, the pair followed them into a bush near several homes. There, they spotted a Woolworths shopping bag concealing the newborn.

They grabbed scissors and cut open the bag to investigate. Inside, they found the baby wrapped in a black T-shirt.

The infant’s umbilical cord had already been cut but remained untied. Meanwhile, the placenta was still inside the bag.

The discovery prompted an immediate response from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA). Officers and paramedics rushed to the scene to assist the vulnerable newborn.

Paramedics Confirm Newborn Is in Good Health

Despite the disturbing circumstances, paramedics examined the baby and confirmed she was in good health.

Meanwhile, RUSA officers began questioning residents to establish who had left the infant in the bush. Their enquiries soon uncovered a potentially important witness.

A woman approached first responders and shared information about a suspicious incident from the previous afternoon.

She claimed she had seen another woman throwing away a bag in the same bush on Monday, 12 October.

Her account raised fresh questions about when someone abandoned the newborn. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the woman seen by the witness was the baby’s mother.

Investigators also have yet to establish how long the infant remained inside the bag before the two passers-by heard her cries.

RUSA Officers Search for Baby’s Mother

Following the discovery, reaction officers continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

They gathered information about women in the surrounding area who might have recently given birth. Their efforts aimed to establish the newborn’s identity and locate her mother.

By 10:20 on Tuesday morning, officers were still working to identify the woman responsible.

RUSA has urged anyone with relevant information to come forward. Information from residents could help investigators determine what happened and identify the person who abandoned the child.

For now, the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s abandonment remain unclear. However, the baby survived the ordeal and received medical attention after her discovery.
