Ronald Acuña Jr.’s postgame no-show tosses his Braves future into doubt

The whole Atlanta Braves offense is feeling the heat after as soon as again laying an October egg in Game 3 of the NLDS versus the Los Angeles Dodgers, however nobody is under more fire than Ronald Acuña Jr. Not surprisingly so: While he’s been the face of this franchise from basically the minute he rupture onto the scene with a scintillating Rookie of the Year project in 2018, he’s yet to bring his MVP upside into the postseason. Acuña Jr. went into play on Tuesday with a profession.244/.360/.409 playoff slash line. His OPS drops to.595 over Atlanta’s last 3 October looks, a number that will be even lower after going 0-for-3 with a walk in Game 3. A Braves group constructed around its homegrown core of players– players they’ve tossed a lot of cash at on long-lasting offers– has actually viewed those players show up little every year because that wonderful 2021 title run. At this moment, it’s time for some responses– or it would be, if the very best of those players were anywhere to be discovered.

Except Acuña Jr. reacted to his no-show on the field by no-showing off of it, leaving his colleagues to respond to hard concerns in his lack. That’s certainly a bad indication for the rest of this series; you do not desire your most skilled and prominent gamer, the guy who sets the tone, reacting to misfortune by bailing. It likewise brings major implications for Atlanta’s future– a future that Acuña Jr. may not be a part of if he can’t show that he can meet all the commitments of a fundamental star.

Can Braves trust Ronald Acuña Jr. enough to lock him

Acuña Jr. has actually been a polarizing off-field figure throughout his time with the Braves, and he’s discovered himself based on some quite unreasonable discourse along the method. There’s a distinction in between policing somebody’s habits and anticipating them to live up to their function as a leader. Struggling in the postseason is something; lots of fantastic gamers before him have actually failed throughout numerous successive playoff runs, and a lot of terrific gamers after him will do the very same. The genuine issue here, however, is that it appears to have actually entered into his head, and he’s picking to manage it in such a way that simply makes life harder for everyone around him. And beyond that, it constantly appears to be something with Acuña Jr., who simply a couple of days ago chose to go on a previous colleague’s podcast in the middle of October and air out some unclean laundryHe is inarguably among the most talented– if not the most talented– baseball gamers on world Earth. In between his playoff plate method collapsing, his prolonged injury history and his fondness for drama, does the juice end up being no longer worth the capture at some point? That’s no longer actually a theoretical concern. This is the last surefire year of Acuña Jr.’s offer, which likewise includes group choices for 2027 and 2028 at $ 17 million each. That’s certainly an imagine a gamer as great as he is, and the Braves will definitely be getting a minimum of the very first of those alternatives this winter season. It will not be long before Atlanta has to make a longer-term choice, and if they do not feel like they can hand a 29-year-old with knee problems and a checkered postseason a substantial brand-new agreement? This relationship might pertain to an end quicker than any person thought of.Of course, we’re still extremely far from shooting up Acuña Jr. trade hypotheticals. That stated: With every empty night at the plate, and with every circumstances like this in which he provides Atlanta factor to question that he can be the face of a World Series franchise, he’s making the group’s choice much easier and simpler.
