Did you understand that the variety of Catholic exorcists in the U.S. is associated with the U.S. GDP per capita? Does this mean that demonic activity is driven by U.S. success? Obviously not. — put your tinfoil hats on– the numbers sure make it appear possible if you squint hard enough.
That’s what Get Spurious is everything about: statistically real however realistically useless connections. This site reveals strange, meaningless, in some cases amusing connections in between real-world data. As the name recommends, it focuses on spurious connectionswhere 2 unassociated things appear to follow the exact same pattern regardless of having no significant connection.
The website pulls information from a big range of sources like public databases, federal government records, sports data, and financial reports. It then searches for incorrect patterns that simply take place to compare.
A few of the very best examples that I’ve stumbled upon, besides the above, are: SpaceX rocket launches tracking together with MrBeast’s YouTube customer count and smoking cigarettes rates in the U.S. inversely associating children called Khaleesi.
On the Get Spurious homepage it provides you with a random spurious connection. Each consists of a chart demonstrating how the 2 patterns line up with time, plus a connection rating determining how carefully they match. You can click Search all to check out all of the other examples. You can likewise browse by subject, consisting of food, science, sports, and economics.
It’s an amusing bunny hole, however there’s a beneficial lesson here, too. Connection does not equivalent causation. Even if 2 stats move together does not indicate one has anything to do with the other. It’s a misconception that is frequently overlooked nowadays and the website is a chuckle-inducing suggestion regarding why you should not think every attractive fact you see online.
