Stock market today: Stock market headed for a flat opening
Dalal Street is expected to open little changed after the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady, while elevated crude oil prices continued to weigh on sentiment.
GIFT Nifty futures stood at 22,708, indicating a muted start for the Nifty 50, which had closed at 22,698.85 on Wednesday. The Fed’s decision to maintain rates came as expected, with the central bank awaiting further inflation data and describing inflation as still elevated.
The outlook for equity markets is linked to movements in oil prices, the US dollar and foreign investment flows. Brent crude futures hovered around $115 a barrel as traders assessed the risks to regional energy supplies from the Middle East conflict. These factors formed the backdrop to expectations of a subdued opening for domestic benchmarks.
Stock market today: Asian shares retreat as AI earnings trigger mixed market reactions
Asian shares surrendered earlier gains as corporate earnings announcements linked to artificial intelligence prompted sharply different reactions from investors. The mixed responses raised the stakes for results from Amazon and Intel expected later in the day. Alphabet’s hefty cash burn sent its shares down 10% in after-hours trading, wiping nearly $400 billion off its market value and pushing Nasdaq futures 1% lower.
Microsoft moved in the opposite direction after reporting better-than-expected cash flows, lifting its shares by 3%. The contrasting reactions came as technology earnings remained a key influence on market sentiment. Across Asia, equities also reflected developments in the semiconductor sector, with Samsung Electronics’ strong operating profit growth failing to prevent its shares from declining. The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.7%.
Stock market today: Brent crude slips to $114.50 as peace-talk hopes emerge
Oil prices declined on Thursday, giving up some of the previous session’s gains as hopes of renewed peace talks eased concerns about supply disruptions in the Middle East. Brent crude futures fell 82 cents, or 0.7%, to $114.50 a barrel by 0132 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped $1.04, or 1%, to $101.74 a barrel. The declines followed a stronger session on Wednesday, when Brent rose 1.3% and WTI gained 3%.
Market sentiment was influenced by reports of efforts to revive negotiations between the US and Iran. However, the decline in prices remained limited amid concerns over escalating regional conflict and potential disruptions to energy supplies.
Stock market recap: Rupee in focus, falls 21 paise to close at 95.28 against US dollar
Rupee depreciated 21 paise against the US dollar on Wednesday to settle at 95.28, weighed down by a stronger dollar and surging crude oil prices. In the interbank foreign exchange market, the currency opened at 95.01 against the dollar before losing ground to touch an intraday low of 95.29.
It eventually closed at 95.28, compared with Tuesday’s closing level of 95.07. The previous session had seen rupee appreciate 8 paise against the US currency. The latest decline came amid elevated oil prices and a stronger dollar, both of which remained important factors for currency movements. Forex traders expected rupee to maintain a slight negative bias, citing the dollar’s strength and positive US Treasury yields.
Stock market recap: Sensex sheds 352 points, Nifty closes below 22,700
Benchmark indices ended lower on Wednesday, with selling in information technology shares and Reliance Industries weighing down the sentiment. The decline came amid rising crude oil prices and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened lower and fell as much as 995 points to an intraday low of 72,603.57 during morning trade. It subsequently recovered some of its losses to settle at 73,246.03, down 352.64 points, or 0.48%. The NSE Nifty also closed in the red, losing 50.90 points, or 0.22%, to finish at 22,698.85. The closing levels reflected a weaker session for the benchmark indices, even as some buying interest emerged in the broader market.
Dalal Street began the day in green as investors observed elevated crude oil prices, movements in the US dollar and the Federal Reserve’s policy stance remaining key factors for investors. Sensex and Nifty have faced selling pressure, although select buying has supported broader market indices.
At the same time, foreign portfolio investment flows have shown signs of buying in recent sessions, even as overseas investors have remained net sellers through October. Global equity markets have also reflected mixed reactions to technology earnings, with developments in artificial intelligence-related businesses influencing sentiment across Asian markets.
Meanwhile, movements in oil prices remain closely linked to concerns over Middle East supply disruptions. The direction of benchmark indices will depend on how investors assess these domestic and global factors, alongside the outlook for inflation, interest rates and currency movements.
