‘Why did he punt?’ fans left confused after controversial decision by Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield

news

With 1:45 left in the video game, down 24-17 in your home versus No. 14 Tennessee at their own 25-yard line, the Arkansas Razorback offense came off the field. That’s the concern Ryan Silverfield will need to ask himself after a frustrating loss.

The Razorbacks had all 3 of their timeouts on the 4th and 10, and Silverfield chose to send out the punt system on the field. The crowd booed as the offense trotted to the sideline. The defense stopped working to avoid an initially down, and the video game ended. Tennessee were the victors, 24-17.

“At the time, I think we were 2/11 in third down situations. It’s the fourth and ten. If you don’t get it, say you try and throw it and use all three timeouts and place it at 1:25. They kick a field goal; you’re down ten now with no timeouts, roughly 1:20 left in the game,” Silverfield stated. “So, we need to score a touchdown in that situation and get the onside kick and kick a field goal just to tie it, and that’s a pretty low percentage.”

To his point, being on your own 25 down by 7 would not necessitate any qualified head coach to keep their offense on the field, particularly on the verge of an upset. The offense had a hard time all video game versus a strong Volunteer defense however discovered completion zone when it mattered.

Fans on Twitter voiced their disappointments with Silver field’s choice to sideline the offense. One fan voiced, “I’m not going to listen to it. No excuse. Give yourself a chance. Clown.”

Another fan stated, “Very dumb coach, especially in the SEC.”

Some fans even explained how they disagreed with the play calling, with one fan stating, “The bigger problem was running on 3rd and 13. That ensured that we were punting on 4th down.”

The 2– 4 Razorbacks aim to recover on the roadway versus Vanderbilt on Saturday, October 17 (7 p.m. ET).
