Wills Bros Civil Engineering has been selected ahead of two rival bidders to deliver a £220m A9 dualling scheme between Pitlochry and Killiecrankie in Scotland.
The Scottish Government announced its intention to award the construction contract, subject to the completion of a mandatory standstill period.
The 6.4km scheme is being delivered through Transport Scotland, the government’s transport agency.
Wills Bros had been shortlisted alongside Balfour Beatty and Kier last November, when the job was valued at £205m.
Work will include new grade-separated junctions, active travel routes and flood mitigation measures.
The Pitlochry-to-Killiecrankie dualling scheme (pictured) forms part of the Scottish Government’s £3.97bn programme to dual the A9 between Perth and Inverness. The government said the latest project would help achieve its aim of having half the route dualled by 2030.
The contract is expected to create 60 full-time equivalent jobs, alongside opportunities for 17 graduates, 11 apprentices and eight new entrants.
The Scottish Government estimated that the project would generate about £33m of opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses and suppliers near the site.
Wills Bros committed to providing £350,000 of social value investment, alongside 300 hours of volunteering for community projects and 300 hours of engagement with schools.
Scottish Government cabinet secretary for economy, tourism and transport Stephen Flynn said the contract formed part of the government’s wider investment in the A9.
He said: “Alongside delivering a safer and more resilient A9, this contract will create jobs, develop skills, provide opportunities for local businesses and invest directly in the communities it serves.”
Preparatory work was already under way around Pitlochry and Killiecrankie, including archaeological investigations, tree felling and demolition of vacant properties.
Following the contract award, Wills Bros will begin mobilisation and detailed planning. The contractor will also hold events with local communities to outline construction plans and the proposed design.
